The Ex-Wife's Trashed Room: My Million-Dollar Empire Chapter 1

Everyone said I was lucky to marry Mark.

I gave up my design degree to support him, raising our son Eli while confined to a tiny sewing room.

That was why they thought my existence was worthless.

They only valued Chloe, Mark's glamorous coworker.

When I left to care for my sick sister for three days, they gutted my sewing room to build a game room for Chloe.

They threw my late mother's vintage sewing machine and my twenty years of design manuscripts into the rain-soaked dumpster.

It was then that Ben Carter appeared — the master restorer, my savior.

He salvaged my ruined relics, gave me his entire studio, and publicly declared I was his muse.

When Mark tried to drag me back, Ben destroyed his career; when Eli mocked me, Ben revoked his trust fund.

I had never been treated with such absolute respect, and I gave him my whole heart.

Just before my first solo exhibition, I went to Ben's office to surprise him and overheard his conversation with Chloe.

"Are Anna's designs fully secured?" Chloe's voice echoed behind the door. "Mark is getting suspicious."

"Do you think I'd let her slip away?" Ben replied coldly.

"But she thinks you saved her!"

"That's exactly why we paid you to destroy her room in the first place."

I pushed open the front door, the heavy brass handle slipping against my palm, and choked on a thick cloud of white plaster dust.

My suitcase thumped against the hardwood floor.

Splintered two-by-fours and shattered drywall coated the entryway, burying the exact spot where my sewing room had stood.

"Careful with that granite edge!" a sharp voice rang out.

I wiped the stinging dust from my eyes. A blonde woman in a silk blouse stood in the center of the wreckage, pointing at two contractors carrying a massive slab of dark marble.

Chloe.

She turned, spotting me by the door. She did not drop her pointing finger.

"Anna," Chloe said, crossing her arms. "You really should have called before coming back early. You're interrupting the contractors."

My throat went dry. I stared at the crushed remains of my drafting table.

"What did you do to my room?" I asked.

"We're installing a wet bar," Chloe said, smoothing a speck of dust from her pristine sleeve. "Mark agreed the space was completely wasted on those old fabrics. We needed something functional for entertaining."

Sixteen years ago, I dropped out of design school to pay for Mark's master's degree. I gave up my studio, shrinking my entire existence into that tiny ten-by-ten corner.

Now, it was just rubble.

A burst of electronic gunfire echoed from the living room.

I stepped over a pile of broken baseboards. My fifteen-year-old son, Eli, sprawled across a brand-new, cream-colored leather sectional, his thumbs hammering a game controller.

"Eli," I said.

He did not look up. The television screen flashed blue and red across his face.

My fingernails dug into my palms. "Did you know they were tearing down my workspace?"

"It wasn't a workspace, Mom," Eli muttered, his eyes locked on the screen. "It was a hoarding closet."

"Those were my client commissions."

"You sew useless rags for pennies," Eli shot back, finally pausing his game to glare at me.

"I paid for your hockey gear with those commissions," I said, my voice trembling.

"Dad makes the real money," Eli said. "Chloe actually knows how to make this place look decent."

He dropped the controller onto the cushion.

"Honestly, Mom? Chloe's changes actually make us feel like a real family. Not just people living around your mess."

The words hit my chest hard. A real family.

I looked from my son to the smirking woman standing in the hallway, then down at the ruined floorboards.

"Where is the machine?" I demanded.

Chloe sighed, rolling her eyes. "The contractors cleared out all the junk an hour ago. Check the bins outside."

I shoved past the contractors and burst through the front door.

Heavy sheets of rain hammered the driveway, instantly soaking through my cotton shirt. The sky had turned a bruised purple.

I sprinted toward the massive green industrial dumpster parked at the edge of the lawn.

Mud sloshed over my sneakers as I grabbed the rusted metal rim and hoisted myself up.

The stench of rotting food and wet cardboard hit my face.

I plunged my bare hands into the trash.

"Where is it?" I muttered, tossing aside empty paint cans and shattered pieces of my dress form.

Rain lashed against my cheeks, blinding me. I wiped the water away with a filthy wrist and dug deeper.

My fingers scraped against cold, heavy iron.

I yanked a sodden piece of drywall out of the way.

There it was. The vintage Singer treadle machine my mother left me twenty years ago, right before the cancer took her.

I grabbed the iron wheel to pull it free.

The metal groaned. As I dragged it into the dim light of the streetlamp, I saw the damage.

The ornate gold decals were scraped off. The heavy iron head was smashed inward, the needle bar snapped in half.

They had not just thrown it away. They had dropped a sledgehammer on it.

"Anna, stop acting like a lunatic!"

I turned. Mark stood on the porch, perfectly dry beneath a large black golf umbrella. He wore the tailored navy suit I had ironed for him three days ago.

"Get out of the garbage," Mark ordered, his brow furrowing in disgust. "You're embarrassing us in front of the neighbors."

I stared at the crushed metal in my hands, then at my husband of sixteen years.

"You destroyed my mother's machine," I said.

"It was rusted junk," Mark countered, stepping down onto the walkway. "I'll buy you a new plastic one tomorrow."

"It was the last thing she gave me."

"And it was taking up space," Mark said, his tone flat. "Now wash your hands, go inside, and start dinner. Chloe has been dealing with the workers all day and she's starving."

I looked at him. Really looked at him. The man I had scrubbed floors for, the man I had built a life around, was staring at me like I was a stray dog ruining his lawn.

I did not argue. I did not scream.

I let the ruined iron head slip from my fingers back into the trash.

I climbed down from the dumpster, my clothes heavy with mud and rainwater.

"Anna, did you hear me?" Mark snapped, stepping closer.

I ignored him. I walked straight to my sedan parked in the driveway.

Reaching into my soaked coat pocket, I pulled out my keys and popped the trunk.

"Where do you think you're going?" Mark yelled over the downpour.

I opened the back passenger door. From the dry depths of my suitcase, I pulled out a small, unsoaked cedar box.

I placed it gently onto the backseat.

"I am talking to you!" Mark shouted, marching toward the car. "You walk away now, and you don't come back!"

I slid into the driver's seat and slammed the door shut.

My thumb hit the central lock button.

A loud click echoed through the cabin just as Mark's fist slammed against the glass.

"Open this door right now!" he roared, his face turning red, the umbrella tilting away to let rain hit his shoulders.

I turned the key in the ignition.

The engine roared to life, drowning out his voice completely.

I shifted the car into drive, my eyes fixed on the cedar box resting in the rearview mirror.
