Chapter 2

"Anna, turn the car around right now," Mark said through the car speakers.

My muddy hands tightened on the steering wheel. Plaster dust still coated my knuckles. Three days earlier, I had packed one suitcase to care for my sick sister. I had expected to return to the same life.

Instead, I had found my room demolished and my mother's sewing machine in a dumpster.

"You destroyed her machine," I said.

"It was rusted junk. I already told you I would buy a modern one." His voice sharpened. "You embarrassed us in front of the neighbors by climbing into the trash."

"Chloe threw away my equipment."

"We are installing a wet bar. We need the space for clients."

"You promised to move my things into the guest room."

"The guest room is for Chloe's Pilates equipment. Stop acting as if the world revolves around your hobby." He exhaled loudly. "Eli is upset. Come home, apologize, and make dinner."

The order sounded so ordinary that something inside me went still.

"I am not coming back."

Silence filled the car.

Then Mark laughed. "You have no money and nowhere to go. You will be back before midnight. Do not expect me to leave the porch light on."

I ended the call.

At the next stoplight, I powered off my phone and placed it beside the cedar box on the passenger seat. The box held my mother's sketches, embroidery samples, and probate papers. It was the only thing I had managed to keep dry.

Two hours later, I sat across from a scratched laminate desk in a rental office on the edge of Oakridge.

Mr. Barnes studied my wet clothes and the mud drying on my shoes. "First month's rent and the security deposit are due now. Miss the first, and I start notices on the second."

"Understood."

"I do not rent to people who bring fights into my building. Is your husband going to show up here?"

"He does not know this address."

"What do you do for work?"

"Custom sewing and historical textile commissions."

His eyebrows rose. "That pays rent?"

"It will."

I slid a cashier's check across the desk. Before the bank closed, I had emptied the emergency account I had hidden from Mark for five years. The balance barely covered the deposit, rent, and a locksmith.

Mr. Barnes checked the amount twice. "Fourth floor. No elevator. The radiator knocks, and the kitchen faucet leaks."

"Does anyone else have a key?"

"Me and the maintenance supervisor."

"Change the lock tomorrow."

"That costs extra."

"Add it to the lease."

He pushed a rusted brass key toward me. I signed the papers without hesitating.

The apartment smelled of old paint and pine cleaner. It had one bedroom, a narrow kitchen, and windows that looked over an alley. The walls were bare. The floorboards were scarred.

It was also mine.

I locked the door, then returned to the sedan for the Singer. The cast-iron base weighed more than sixty pounds. I dragged it up four flights, resting on every landing while my arms shook.

By the time I set it on the living-room floor, my palms were raw.

I found a towel in the bathroom and knelt beside the machine. Rainwater had settled inside the carved iron base. I dried each groove, then wiped mud from the cracked housing.

The gold decals were nearly gone. The needle bar had snapped. One side of the handwheel bent inward. When I tried to turn it, the gears caught with a harsh metallic grind.

"Come on," I whispered.

I rocked the wheel again. It moved half an inch and stopped.

A loose metal tooth dropped onto the floor.

I picked it up. The timing gear had broken.

For one dangerous second, Mark's voice returned to me. Rusted junk. Useless hobby. You will come back.

I opened the cedar box instead.

My mother's old business card lay beneath the sketches. On the back, in her handwriting, was the name of a restoration shop on Fourth Street. Carter Restoration. She had once taken an antique dress form there for repair.

I searched the address on my laptop. The shop still existed.

A photograph showed a brick storefront, wood furniture in the windows, and a man in a canvas apron standing beside a restored Victorian cabinet.

I called the number before I could lose my nerve.

"Carter Restoration," a deep voice answered.

"I have an antique Singer with a cracked housing, a broken timing gear, and water damage," I said. "Can it be saved?"

A pause followed.

"Bring it in tomorrow morning," the man replied. "I will tell you the truth after I see it."

I ended the call and looked around the empty apartment.

There was no bed. No table. No one waiting for dinner.

Before exhaustion could take me, I photographed every damaged part of the Singer. The broken needle bar. The crushed handwheel. The missing timing tooth. I photographed the mud packed into the cast-iron flowers and the scrape where the contractor's sledgehammer had struck.

Then I opened a private cloud account Mark could not access. I uploaded the photographs, the lease, the bank receipt, and a scan of my mother's will from the cedar box. If Mark decided the machine belonged to him, he would have to argue against dates, signatures, and evidence.

A voicemail notification appeared when I powered my phone on for less than a minute.

Mark's message lasted nine seconds.

"Midnight, Anna. After that, I change the locks."

I saved the recording to the same folder, disabled location sharing, and powered the phone off again.

The apartment felt colder after hearing him. I found an old blanket in my suitcase and wrapped it around my shoulders. The radiator knocked twice, then released a thin stream of heat.

I spread my coat on the floor beside the machine and lay down. The cedar box became my pillow.

For the first time in sixteen years, the silence did not feel like punishment.

It felt like the beginning of a decision.
