Chapter 4

"Look closely at the signature, Mark," I instructed.

Mark stared at the yellowed paper resting on the metal table. A single bead of sweat formed at his temple, sliding down his jawline. "This is a forgery. You printed this yourself to frame us."

"It bears your signature as the secondary guarantor," I pointed out, tapping the bottom right corner of the document. "And the official notary seal from twelve years ago."

"My lawyer will tear this apart in court," he sneered, though his voice lacked its previous volume. "You have no jurisdiction to weaponize a clerical error."

"A shell company paying for a visa is not a clerical error," I countered. "It is a Class C felony."

"I did not know!" Chloe cried out. "Mark set it up! He told me the startup was legitimate."

Mark whipped his head toward her. "Shut up, Chloe. Do not give her anything."

"But she has the paper!" Chloe yelled back at him.

Her artificial poise shattered completely. She dropped to the concrete floor, her knees hitting the ground with a dull thud. She scrambled forward, reaching under the metal table. Her manicured fingers clawed frantically at the hem of my uniform skirt.

"Eleanor, please," Chloe begged. Her voice pitched into a high, reedy whine. "I did not know it was illegal. The agency told me to sign it! Mark said he handled the legalities."

"Get up," Mark hissed. He grabbed her shoulder, trying to haul her to her feet. "Do not grovel to her. She is bluffing."

"She is going to deport me, Mark!" Chloe sobbed, ripping her arm from his grasp. She tugged my fabric harder. "I will do anything. I will apologize. I will clean your new apartment. Just do not stamp that file."

I kicked my chair back. The metal legs scraped harshly against the concrete floor. I pulled my skirt free from her grip. "Federal law does not accept apologies for visa fraud."

"You sponsored me!" Chloe argued, tears streaming down her face. "You signed the initial guarantee."

"And I am officially revoking it," I stated. "Due to newly discovered criminal affiliations."

The heavy steel door cracked open. Officer Miller leaned in, clutching a secondary background report. "Officer Vance, I have the—"

Before Miller could finish, Leo shoved his way past the officer. My son's face twisted in a vicious snarl. He ignored Miller's shout of protest and lunged straight toward the table.

"You are ruining everything!" Leo screamed.

He threw his weight across the metal surface. His hand shot toward the silver federal seal pen resting near my fingers. He grabbed the heavy metal barrel, intending to hurl it across the room.

"Give me that!" my son yelled, his knuckles turning white. "You are not stamping anything! You are just a bitter old woman!"

"Put the pen down, Leo," I warned, keeping my tone perfectly level.

"No!" he shouted. "Dad deserves that house. He earned it. He is a professor, and you are just a government drone. You do not even belong in our neighborhood anymore."

"I paid the mortgage," I said.

"Dad pays for my life!" Leo shot back. "He bought me this car. He is paying my tuition. You just embarrass us."

I did not flinch. I locked eyes with him, my gaze hardening into ice. I slammed my palm against the concealed red button mounted beneath the table's edge.

A piercing siren erupted in the corridor, vibrating through the thick walls.

Within three seconds, the door banged wide open. Two federal marshals stormed the room, moving with lethal precision.

"Step back from the officer!" the lead marshal barked.

Leo froze. His eyes darted to the heavy black gun holsters strapped to the marshals' thighs. The color drained from his face instantly, leaving him entirely ashen. He dropped the pen. It clattered against the metal table. He stumbled backward, hitting the gray wall behind him.

"Hands where we can see them," the second marshal ordered. He rested his palm heavily on his weapon.

Mark threw his hands up in the air. "We are cooperating! He is just a kid. He did not mean any harm."

"He assaulted a federal officer during an active fraud investigation," I stated smoothly.

"Mom, tell them to back off," Leo whimpered. His previous arrogance vanished, replaced by the trembling fear of a boy who finally realized he was out of his depth.

"You made your choice this morning, Leo," I replied. "When you told me to pack my trash."

"I did not mean it," he pleaded, pressing his back harder against the wall. "Dad told me to send that text. He said it would make you leave faster."

Mark shot a furious glare at his son. "Keep your mouth shut, Leo."

"You used him to do your dirty work," I said to Mark. "Just like you used my paychecks."

"I protected my assets," Mark argued. "That house reflects my status. I entertain the dean there. You expect me to host university board members in a house co-owned by a clerk?"

"You have no proof of the forgery," Mark countered, his voice shaking slightly. "My lawyers will tie you up in civil court for a decade."

"I do not need civil court," I replied. "I have a fraudulent visa application sitting right in front of me. I do not need a judge to deport her. I only need this stamp."

I turned my attention back to the table. I picked up the heavy, wooden-handled stamp resting beside the inkpad. The rubber base bore the word 'DENIED' in bold, block lettering.

I pressed it into the crimson ink.

"What are you doing?" Mark demanded, his arms still raised.

"Concluding the preliminary review," I answered.

I lifted the stamp in the air. I hovered it exactly two inches above the signature line on Chloe's naturalization application.

Chloe covered her face, weeping loudly into her hands. "No, no, no. Please, do not send me back. I have nothing there."

Mark stared at the red ink glistening on the rubber edge. His jaw went slack. "Eleanor, wait. Let us talk about this rationally."

"We are talking," I said.

"You cannot just send her away," Mark argued, desperation bleeding into his tone. "My research tour requires her presence. The dean expects us to attend the gala in Paris next week. You will ruin my career."

"Your career was built on my minimum-wage paychecks," I reminded him. "I am simply taking back my investment."

"I will pay you back," Mark offered quickly. "Every cent you put into my PhD. I will write you a check right now."

"I do not want your money," I said.

I lowered the stamp a fraction of an inch.

Chloe shrieked, burying her head against Mark's knees. "Give her what she wants, Mark! Give it to her!"

"Shut up, Chloe," Mark snapped. He looked back at me, his eyes wild. "You are acting entirely out of spite."

"I am acting within the exact parameters of federal law," I corrected. "You forged my signature on a property deed. You committed real estate fraud to steal a one-point-two million dollar asset. I am offering you a settlement."

"A settlement?" Mark scoffed. "This is extortion."

"This is a negotiation," I said softly.

I pushed the red-inked stamp closer to the paper. A tiny droplet of crimson fell, splashing onto the corner of the form.

Chloe gasped, her hands gripping her hair.

"Want me to let her go? Fine," I said, my finger hovering over the heavy stamp. I looked down at Mark's deathly pale face. "Either sign over all rights to the one-point-two million dollar house tonight and walk away with absolutely nothing, or watch her get on the six AM deportation flight tomorrow."
