Chapter 5

Mark stared at the crimson ink gathering on the rubber edge of the stamp. His knees knocked together, a faint but rapid vibration that rattled the fabric of his tailored slacks. He glanced at the two armed federal marshals flanking the steel door. Their hands remained resting securely on their weapons.

"You have five seconds," I said.

"You cannot do this," Mark whispered, his voice cracking. "We share a child. We built an entire life together."

"Four."

"Eleanor, be reasonable. I can secure a university loan. I can buy you out of your half of the equity. You will get your money."

"You forged my signature to steal the equity," I stated. "There is no buyout for a felony."

"Three."

I reached into the leather portfolio I had brought down with the ledger. I pulled out a crisp, pre-drafted legal document. I slid it across the cold metal table. The bold heading sat perfectly centered at the top of the page. Voluntary Forfeiture of Assets and Uncontested Dissolution of Marriage.

"Two."

"Dad, do something!" Leo shouted from his corner, his voice shrill and panicked. "Do not let her take the house! Where am I supposed to park my car?"

Mark ignored our son. He picked up the document, his eyes darting across the dense legal paragraphs. The color completely drained from his cheeks, leaving his skin a sickly gray. "You want me to sign away the deed entirely? And waive all alimony? You are leaving me with absolutely nothing."

"You have your prestigious career," I reminded him. "The one you claimed I was unfit to share."

"One."

I pushed the silver federal seal fountain pen toward him. It rolled across the steel surface and stopped against his knuckles.

"Mark, please!" Chloe shrieked from the floor. She wrapped her arms around his calves, her manicured nails digging into his trousers. "Sign it! I cannot go back to my country! I have nothing there! They will ruin me!"

Mark swallowed hard. His chest heaved as he looked from the screaming woman at his feet to the unyielding marshals at the door. He snatched the pen.

"Fine," he spat. His hand trembled so violently the pen tip scratched harshly against the paper. "Take the damn house. You always were a vindictive, miserable woman."

"Sign both pages," I instructed, my voice entirely devoid of emotion.

He flipped to the second sheet. He dragged the nib across the signature line, leaving a jagged, messy scrawl.

"Dad, no!" Leo screamed. He stepped forward before one of the marshals shot him a sharp warning glare. My son shrank back against the concrete wall, tears spilling over his eyelashes. "That is my home! All my stuff is there! My gaming setup, my clothes!"

"Shut up, Leo," Mark snapped. He threw the pen onto the table. It clattered loudly, rolling off the edge and hitting the floor.

"You said this was foolproof! You said she was just a clerk!" Leo yelled back at his father. "You told me to send that text!"

"I said shut up!" Mark roared, his face turning purple. He shoved the signed papers back toward me. "There. You have your precious real estate. You have your revenge. Now let her go."

I picked up the documents. I checked the signatures. Both matched his usual script, despite the frantic strokes. He had dotted the letter 'i' in his last name with excessive force, nearly tearing the paper. I folded the pages neatly and tucked them into my uniform breast pocket.

"A wise decision," I said.

I turned my gaze to Chloe. She was still huddled on the floor. Her expensive white blazer was now smeared with dirt from the concrete. She let out a massive, shuddering sigh of relief. She reached up, trying to grab Mark's hand.

"Thank you," she sobbed, looking up at me with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Thank you, Eleanor. I promise we will stay out of your way. We will move to a different state. You will never see us again."

"You are correct," I said. "I will never see you again."

My right hand still gripped the wooden handle of the heavy stamp. The red ink glistened under the harsh fluorescent lights.

I locked eyes with Mark. He offered a smug, triumphant smirk, clearly believing he had successfully negotiated his way out of a federal crime.

I brought my arm down.

The rubber slammed onto the signature line of Chloe's naturalization application with a deafening crack.

The sound echoed off the bare walls like a gunshot.

The red block letters burned against the white paper.

DENIED.

Silence stretched across the interrogation room, thick and absolute.

Chloe stared at the red ink. Her mouth fell open, forming a silent oval. A high-pitched scream ripped from her throat, echoing off the concrete. She clawed at her own hair, her eyes rolling back into her head. She collapsed sideways, her skull hitting the floor with a dull thud. She lay completely motionless.

"Chloe!" Mark yelled. He dropped to his knees beside her, shaking her shoulders. She remained limp.

He whipped his head up to face me. His eyes bulged with pure, unfiltered rage. The smugness vanished, replaced by sheer panic.

"What did you just do?" Mark roared. He lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the metal table as if he wanted to flip it over. "I signed the papers! We had a deal! You said you would let her go!"

"I offered you a settlement," I corrected, my tone entirely flat. "I said I would not prosecute you for being an accomplice to visa fraud. That agreement keeps you out of federal prison. It allows you to keep your tenured position at the university."

Mark froze. His mouth hung open.

"As for her visa," I continued, tapping the rejected application with my manicured fingernail. "I never said I would approve it."

"You lied to me," Mark whispered, his face twisting in horror.

"I presented terms. You failed to read the fine print," I replied. "A common mistake for someone who relies on others to do his coursework."

"I will call the regional director," Mark threatened, pulling his phone from his pocket with shaking hands. "I will tell him you extorted me."

"Call him," I challenged. "Tell him you signed a confession to real estate fraud in a recorded federal room. Tell him you sponsored a visa through a shell company. I am sure the university board will love reading the transcript."

Mark dropped his phone. It clattered against the concrete.

"You are a monster," Mark hissed, backing away from the table. "You planned this. You planned to take everything from the moment I walked in."

"You stole fifteen years of my life," I reminded him. "I scrubbed diner floors to pay for your textbooks. I slept in a freezing basement so you could afford to network with the dean. I simply took my house back. The deportation is just standard agency procedure."

"She is my fiancé!" Mark shouted, pointing at the unconscious woman on the floor. "She needs medical attention! You cannot just throw her out of the country!"

"She needs a one-way ticket," I said.

I stood up from the high-backed leather chair. I smoothed the lapels of my dark blue uniform, ensuring the gold senior officer bars sat perfectly straight. I looked past Mark, focusing my attention on the two armed guards by the door.

"Take suspect Chloe into the temporary holding cell to await deportation," I ordered.

The lead marshal stepped forward immediately. He hauled Chloe's limp body up by the arms, her white blazer dragging across the gritty concrete. Her head lolled against her chest, and a thin line of drool slid from the corner of her mouth.

"You cannot do this," Mark whispered. He did not move to stop them. He simply stood there, his hands hanging uselessly at his sides.

"I already have," I said.

The second marshal looped a steel belly chain around Chloe's waist and cinched it tight. The metallic click echoed off the bare gray walls. They half-carried, half-dragged her toward the open steel door.

I gathered the rejected application, the signed forfeiture documents, and the twelve-year-old US-8809 file into a single neat stack. I clipped my federal seal fountain pen back into my breast pocket and rose from the high-backed leather chair.

"Sign her out at the front desk on your way up, Mr. Vance," I told him. "You are her listed emergency contact. It is the last courtesy this office will ever extend to you."

Mark opened his mouth, then closed it. Whatever threat he had been holding died somewhere in his throat.

I walked past him without another glance. The heavy steel door sealed shut behind me, swallowing the sound of his ragged breathing.

There was still one more thing left to take back tonight.
