Chapter 1

After Halle Anderson cheated on me and came back to me, I gave her three chances to cut ties with her lover.

She grabbed the opportunity and spent those times with him. They had dinners together, did crafts, and she even spent whole nights with him.

After that, she threw everything that was related to her lover away and held my hand again.

“Believe me, I’ll never betray you again.”

One day, I got into a car accident with an energetic young man.

He angrily gave someone a call, and I heard my wife’s best friend’s voice coming through.

“Halle, I’m telling you to not go. You’ve used up all three chances. Grant will definitely divorce you if you do so.”

Immediately after, I heard Halle say fearlessly, “Grant’s an orphan. He’s been deprived of love his whole life, so he’s even more terrified of divorce than I am.

“Just keep this a secret. I know where to draw the line. This is going to be the last time.”

I lay in a pool of my blood and felt cold.

It turned out that this confident young man standing before me was the lover Halle was protecting.

Twenty minutes later, Halle, who had promised to come back to me for good, arrived at the hospital in a rush.

I heard Halle Anderson’s voice through the curtain. She sounded hurt as she chided him lovingly.

“Why didn’t you call me immediately? Is my number just a decoration in your phone?”

Finn Denver propped himself up with much difficulty, and he acted like he was being understanding.

“You said your husband has only given you three chances. I don’t dare to…”

“Three chances?” Halle sounded agitated. “If you need me, just call me. What am I going to do if something happens to you?”

From the next bed, I listened to them as tears blurred my vision.

When the car accident took place, my mind was still very sharp. She had been the first person I called.

However, even after calling her twenty-six times, she never once answered.

Finn only had to call once, and she had immediately answered.

It was because Halle knew that I had no other family members. Regardless of how long the wait was, I would wait for her to get back to me.

At the same time, the doctor came in to treat my injuries.

When the doctor pulled the curtains open, the anger Halle had toward the “culprit” immediately disappeared.

In stunned surprise, she immediately accused me.

“You secretly looked Finn up and ran him over on purpose?”

I never expected her to act that way. Her first instinct was not to see if I was injured. Instead, she was blaming me.

Ever since I first discovered that she had been cheating on me, she hid everything regarding Finn from me.

“He comes from a difficult background. He’ll be affected if you spread the news.”

However, she announced my orphaned identity to everyone.

It was just so she could tell everyone that I would never leave her.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and forced a smile.

“That’s the fourth time. You went back on your promise.”

When I had insisted to divorce her, she stood on the edge of our balcony.

“If you divorce me, I’ll jump from here! I can’t live without you. I’ve told you that I only love you!”

I immediately felt bad. Thus, I gave her three chances to cut ties with her lover.

She cleared all evidence of her affair, and I naively thought that I had won this battle and protected my marriage.

However, reality gave me a cruel wake-up call.

“Is there any difference between three or four times? He got into a car accident! Do you expect me to ignore him heartlessly?”

Halle lowered her voice, as if she were afraid Finn would hear her.

What else could I say?

Should I say that I also got into the same car accident? Should I mention that he only grazed his knees, while I had to get ten stitches on my shoulders?

Finn suddenly called out to her.

“How’s the mediation going? Do we have to compensate him?”

Halle immediately comforted him.

“He’s fine. You should rest.”

I laughed at her words.

The pain from my physical injuries could not compare to what I felt on the inside.

The only sympathy Halle had for me was to sign off all the medical bills on the desk while I was asleep.

However, if she truly cared about me, she would have read all the documents clearly.

She would then see that I had included a divorce agreement, and she had signed that too.

I was sitting in a Starbucks, staring at a cold Americano, while the girl I thought was the love of my life looked at me with pure disgust. Hailee Baxter slammed her latte down and told me we were done, claiming she couldn’t start her career at City Hall with a "diner kid" dragging her down. She wasn't just breaking my heart; she was trading me in for Kyler Craft, the son of a powerful politician who could buy her the future she craved. In my past life, this was the moment I shattered, beginning a twenty-year spiral into alcoholism, poverty, and watching my parents work themselves into an early grave while I failed at everything. I vividly remembered the smell of cheap whiskey and the obituary of my father that I was too broke to even attend. But as I looked down at my hands, they weren't the calloused, shaking hands of a forty-year-old failure; they were smooth, young, and steady. The silver Motorola flip phone in my pocket felt like a relic from a museum, and the girl in front of me looked like a shallow stranger rather than the woman of my dreams. The crushing pain in my chest wasn't a heart attack—it was forty years of bitter regret colliding with a twenty-two-year-old body. Hailee was waiting for me to beg for another chance, her napkin ready to wipe away the pathetic tears she expected, but all I felt was a cold, clinical clarity. How could I have been so blind to her greed, and why did I let one failed exam and a rich boy’s bullying destroy my entire family’s legacy? I glanced at the newspaper on the table: May 12, 2005. This was the day I supposedly lost the City Hall fellowship, but I remembered a secret about the "Supplemental Candidate Protocol" that no one else would know for another week. I stood up, ignored Hailee's insults, and dialed the number etched into my soul. "Mom," I whispered into the flip phone, "I'm coming home. And this time, I’m going to take back everything we lost."
