Chapter 2

My wounds were inflamed that same night, and I got a really high fever.

I went to the doctor’s office alone to pay my bills.

The nurses were murmuring behind me.

“Mr. Denver only suffered some minor injuries, and his girlfriend has switched him to a VIP ward. Look at Mr. White, he’s still all alone despite his severe injuries.”

I grimaced and turned around.

However, Halle slapped me.

“Grant, you went overboard!

“Who allowed you to use my credit card to pay? Finn will find out who you are!

“I’ve told you very clearly that I will definitely cut him off. I just need time. Besides, I’ve done so much. Why are you so ungrateful?”

My fragile body swayed.

My eyes teared up from the slap.

When she saw that, Halle finally softened her tone. She stepped forward and hugged me. “I’m the only person who loves you so much in this world. You should know that.

“As long as you’re willing to wait, I’ll definitely fully return to you.”

I was an orphan who everyone had discarded. When Halle first proposed to me in public, I felt like the happiest man alive.

Nobody could believe it. They kept saying, “You are very lucky to have a wife like Halle!”

I was extremely in love.

One day, Finn threw a tantrum, and she used a video of me being bullied to make him happy. Because of that, I was ostracized by all other rich young men in the same circle.

Just because of Finn’s call, she left me alone in the wilderness. I had to walk home alone, and I almost got eaten by a wild animal.

The situation worsened. She allowed Finn to call me in the middle of the night and hear them being intimate. I almost became depressed.

On top of it all, she blamed me for being selfish and timid.

My face was drenched in cold sweat. I was in extreme pain.

Halle pressed her car key into my palm.

“You won’t be able to rest well here. You should discharge yourself immediately.”

I was extremely feverish, and I started to see spots in my vision.

However, I still nodded.

Halle’s expression became complicated.

At the same time, I received a call from the orphanage director, Mrs. Reid.

After I found out that she was suffering from a heart attack, I stumbled upstairs.

I saw her purplish face as she struggled to breathe.

The emergency department doctor explained, “Just now, a young man came over and argued with her. He even struck her and said some nasty words!”

I almost saw red.

To an orphan like me, Mrs. Reid was like a mother to me.

I stumbled as I turned around. Finn was hiding behind Halle with teary eyes.

“Just now, this old hag called me a gigolo! I was just explaining myself when she suddenly lay on the floor and blamed it on me…”

I was extremely furious. “Nonsense!”

Finn glanced at me and purposely exposed a few fake pinch marks on his body. He sounded really upset.

There were bruises all over Mrs. Reid’s exposed skin.

When I saw Finn’s taunting gaze, I could not help but punch him.

However, someone slapped me even more forcefully the next second.

Rejected No More: The Genius's Revenge Novel Cover

I was sitting in a Starbucks, staring at a cold Americano, while the girl I thought was the love of my life looked at me with pure disgust. Hailee Baxter slammed her latte down and told me we were done, claiming she couldn’t start her career at City Hall with a "diner kid" dragging her down. She wasn't just breaking my heart; she was trading me in for Kyler Craft, the son of a powerful politician who could buy her the future she craved. In my past life, this was the moment I shattered, beginning a twenty-year spiral into alcoholism, poverty, and watching my parents work themselves into an early grave while I failed at everything. I vividly remembered the smell of cheap whiskey and the obituary of my father that I was too broke to even attend. But as I looked down at my hands, they weren't the calloused, shaking hands of a forty-year-old failure; they were smooth, young, and steady. The silver Motorola flip phone in my pocket felt like a relic from a museum, and the girl in front of me looked like a shallow stranger rather than the woman of my dreams. The crushing pain in my chest wasn't a heart attack—it was forty years of bitter regret colliding with a twenty-two-year-old body. Hailee was waiting for me to beg for another chance, her napkin ready to wipe away the pathetic tears she expected, but all I felt was a cold, clinical clarity. How could I have been so blind to her greed, and why did I let one failed exam and a rich boy’s bullying destroy my entire family’s legacy? I glanced at the newspaper on the table: May 12, 2005. This was the day I supposedly lost the City Hall fellowship, but I remembered a secret about the "Supplemental Candidate Protocol" that no one else would know for another week. I stood up, ignored Hailee's insults, and dialed the number etched into my soul. "Mom," I whispered into the flip phone, "I'm coming home. And this time, I’m going to take back everything we lost."
