The day Skyler Jackson married me, he hosted the most extravagant wedding New York had ever seen. As we exchanged vows, he held my hand, tears of joy streaming down his face like a child. Choking back his emotions, he promised, “Skyler Jackson will never let Caroline Edwards down in this lifetime.” After two blissful years of marriage, he asked me if I was ready to start a family. Seeing the hope in his eyes, I agreed. Yet, despite once being unable to imagine life without me, he strayed during my pregnancy, betraying his vows. At six months pregnant, I attended a coffee gathering with the Manhattan society wives. Skyler gently guided me to a seat beside my trusted friend, Zainab Bryant. The day Skyler Jackson married me, he hosted the most extravagant wedding New York had ever seen. As we exchanged vows, he held my hand, tears of joy streaming down his face like a child. Choking back his emotions, he promised, “Skyler Jackson will never let Caroline Edwards down in this lifetime.”

After two blissful years of marriage, he asked me if I was ready to start a family.

Even under the watchful eyes of the other women, he crouched with unwavering affection and smoothed the hem of my Victorian-style dress.

“Oh, Mrs. Jackson, you’re so lucky! Nearly three years of marriage and he still treats you like this,” one of them commented.

“Their love is famous,” added another. “Even if the diamond on your ring dims, their feelings never would.”

Skyler smiled softly and gave my hand a reassuring squeeze, “Please, ladies, don’t tease me. Take good care of Caroline for me today. I’ll be downstairs at the bistro and will come up when the gathering ends.”

The wedding ring that had sparkled on my finger for over two years still shone brightly as he left. Skyler settled the bill for everyone’s coffee, sparking another wave of admiration. I smiled politely, joining in the conversation.

Shortly after, my phone buzzed with a text from “Skyler.” Mrs. Bryant noticed and chuckled, “Skyler's just left, and he’s already checking in?”

I didn’t respond, glancing at the message as my fingers involuntarily twitched. The text was from Skyler’s driver: "Ma’am, Mr. Jackson has asked to be driven to Miss Lang’s place."

Maintaining my composed smile, I turned the phone face down on the table. With Mrs. Bryant’s arm supporting me, I moved towards the large window. She had recently wed herself and was blissfully in love, admiringly asking, “Do you think my husband and I can have a love as steadfast as yours?”

I watched Skyler quicken his steps into the car. As the driver pulled away, heading in the opposite direction of the bistro, I turned my back to the crowd and suppressed any hint of happiness. Fingering the worn edges of my diamond ring, I replied, “Nothing truly remains unchanged.”

The boy who once seemed unable to live without me had inexplicably changed. During my pregnancy, he had given in to temptation and strayed.

I woke up with that familiar churning in my stomach, the third morning in a row. My inner wolf, Lily, stirred restlessly as I bolted to the bathroom, barely making it before emptying what little remained in my stomach from last night's dinner. '*This has to be it*,' I thought, pressing my palm against my still-flat abdomen. After three years as Ryan's Luna, the Moon Goddess had finally blessed us. I splashed cold water on my face and brushed my teeth, studying my reflection. My skin glowed despite the nausea, and my wolf seemed unusually protective, urging me to rest more, eat better. All the signs were there. "We need to be sure before we tell him," I whispered to Lily, who hummed in agreement. I padded back to our bedroom, noticing Ryan had left his laptop open on his desk. He'd rushed out before dawn for an emergency meeting with neighboring packs—at least that's what he'd said.

The morning light filtered through our penthouse windows, casting golden patterns across the Egyptian cotton sheets. I stirred slowly, consciousness returning in gentle waves. Seven years. Seven years of what I believed was perfect love. "Happy anniversary, my only one," Gabriel's voice caressed my ear as he entered our bedroom, a silver breakfast tray balanced in his hands. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, giving him that boyish charm that still made my heart flutter. "You didn't have to," I murmured, sitting up against the headboard as the scent of fresh croissants and coffee filled the air. "For you, I want to do everything." He set the tray down and sat beside me, his fingers brushing mine as he handed me a steaming cup. No redness appeared on his skin, no hives, no shortness of breath—just the miracle of his touch, reserved only for me. The condition that had brought us together.

The pack run had been Marcelo's idea. He'd announced it three days prior at the weekly council meeting, his Alpha tone leaving no room for debate. A show of unity, he'd called it. A reminder that the Black Moon Pack moved as one body, one purpose. I'd watched him from my seat at the far end of the table—the Luna's chair, though I'd stopped feeling like a Luna months ago—and said nothing. Petra Voss had nodded approvingly. The other council members had murmured their agreement. Rosalina, seated closer to Marcelo than protocol allowed, had smiled that soft, adoring smile she always wore around him. I should have known then. The territory's northern river was swollen from early spring melt, the current fast and mean.
