Chapter 3

I spent years finding creative ways to coax him into eating healthy food, but all he saw was the restriction.

He had only met Sienna a handful of times, yet he couldn't stop singing her praises.

Caleb flicked on the overhead light, giving Mason a look of open approval. "Listen to your son. Is this how a mother is supposed to act?"

"Don't you think you're overreacting about Sienna? I told you, nothing is going on. Can't you give me the benefit of the doubt for once?"

"I'm the one who provides for this family, Juliet. Your little catering gig is pocket money. You live in my house, off my money. You need to learn your place. You're the one who can't live without us, not the other way around."

I'd heard enough. I stood and walked toward my room. "You're both right."

Caleb took a sharp breath, his voice turning hoarse with frustration. "Juliet, why do you always give me the silent treatment when we fight? Don't you care about my feelings at all?"

The alcohol hit me all at once, and the room began to spin. I stumbled, my shin cracking hard against the coffee table as I fell backward.

Caleb lunged, his hand catching the back of my head just before it could hit the floor.

"Juliet! Are you okay? You could have cracked your head open!"

I pushed against his chest and slowly sat up, my gaze vacant. "Don't touch me."

He looked stunned, as if he couldn't comprehend my revulsion. Finally, his hands fell away.

I went back to our room and fell into a heavy, dreamless sleep. When I woke up, it was five in the morning.

Despite the hangover, my internal clock woke me on time, as it always did.

Caleb liked freshly baked French toast. Mason would only eat pancakes drenched in syrup.

They were both impossibly picky. The nanny's cooking "tasted weird," and takeout was "unhygienic."

So, for five years, I had woken up two hours early every single day, so that by 7 a.m., they could have a hot breakfast that met their exacting demands.

But today, I rolled over and willed myself back to sleep.

I was the long-lost Donovan heiress, finally brought home after a childhood in foster care. My parents adored me, my husband cherished me, and the woman who tried to ruin my life, Kiera Reese, was locked away in a mental facility. I was safe. I was loved. On my birthday, I decided to surprise my husband, Ivan, at his office. But he wasn't there. I found him at a private art gallery across town. He was with Kiera. She wasn't in a facility. She was radiant, laughing as she stood beside my husband and their five-year-old son. I watched through the glass as Ivan kissed her, a familiar, loving gesture he’d used with me just that morning. I crept closer and overheard them. My birthday wish to go to the amusement park had been denied because he’d already promised the entire park to their son—whose birthday was the same day as mine. "She’s so grateful to have a family, she’d believe anything we tell her," Ivan said, his voice laced with a cruelty that stole my breath. "It's almost sad." My entire reality—my loving parents who funded this secret life, my devoted husband—was a five-year lie. I was just the fool they kept on stage. My phone buzzed. It was a text from Ivan, sent while he stood with his real family. "Just got out of the meeting. So exhausting. I miss you." The casual lie was the final blow. They thought I was a pathetic, grateful orphan they could control. They were about to find out just how wrong they were.

I was left standing alone in front of three hundred elite guests, blinded by mocking camera flashes. My own mother rolled her eyes in disgust, later threatening to freeze my trust fund and sell me to a notorious playboy to recoup her losses. I had spent two years bending over backward to be his perfect bride, only to be discarded like trash. What made it sicker was finding out that Jalyn's sudden "medical emergency" was actually a ruptured cyst caused by having vigorous sex with Elijah right before he walked down the aisle. I was the heiress to a real estate empire, celebrating my engagement to Douglas at our Manhattan penthouse. But when I stepped into the master bedroom, I caught him sleeping with my best friend, Krystle. Before I could even react, Douglas forced me to sign away my family's entire trust fund. He held up a tablet and forced me to watch a live feed of my parents being burned alive in our Hamptons estate. "The fire hasn't reached the main house yet, sign it and I'll call them off," he lied. As soon as the ink dried, he beat me to the ground and locked me in the soundproof study. He poured twenty-three-year-old whiskey on the carpet and dropped a lit cigar. "You could have walked away with nothing, but alive," he sneered. He left me to burn to death while he and Krystle went back to our engagement party to drink champagne. As the flames melted my skin and my bones shattered against the bulletproof glass, I couldn't understand it. How could the man who promised me forever brutally exterminate my entire family just for money? But I didn't die in that fire. Three years later, with a reconstructed face and a new identity as the mysterious global designer Alice Moreau, I returned to New York. Watching Douglas and Krystle flaunt the wealth they stole from my family's ashes, I smiled behind my black veil. It was time to make them pay with everything they had.
