For the sake of his childhood crush, Mauricio had left me countless times. We were just about to sign our marriage license at the courthouse when a call from Aurora—the same Aurora he always rushed to—came through. I held his hand tightly, desperation in my eyes. "Can't you stay? Just until we finish signing the papers, please?" The photographer was urging us to get ready for the pictures. Mauricio looked dashing in his tailored suit, tall and handsome. But his face lacked any joy or excitement you’d expect from a groom-to-be; all I saw was worry for another woman. "Sweetheart, let's come back another day. Aurora's not feeling well; I need to check on her." Not feeling well again? The same excuse he'd used to leave me five times in just one week?

Forget Past for New Romance Chapter 1

For the sake of his childhood crush, Mauricio had left me countless times. We were just about to sign our marriage license at the courthouse when a call from Aurora—the same Aurora he always rushed to—came through. I held his hand tightly, desperation in my eyes.

"Can't you stay? Just until we finish signing the papers, please?"

The photographer was urging us to get ready for the pictures. Mauricio looked dashing in his tailored suit, tall and handsome. But his face lacked any joy or excitement you’d expect from a groom-to-be; all I saw was worry for another woman.

"Sweetheart, let's come back another day. Aurora's not feeling well; I need to check on her."

Not feeling well again? The same excuse he'd used to leave me five times in just one week? The party girl who spent her nights out dancing and drinking was now acting like a fragile damsel—and my boyfriend just couldn't see it. I pleaded with him, holding onto his hand, begging him not to go.

"Please, just this once, can't you stay? We're supposed to get married today!"

But it was as if Mauricio was under Aurora's spell, turning the tables and blaming me for not being understanding.

"Her condition is serious; how can you compare your issues to that? Why can't you be more understanding, like Aurora?"

With a forceful jerk, he pulled his hand away from mine, walking out of the courthouse without a backward glance. I was left there, heartbroken and sobbing uncontrollably.

In that moment, my heart shattered. Memories of the countless times he had left me flashed through my mind. I pictured Aurora holding Mauricio’s hand, mocking me as the jilted bride.

My tears ruined my carefully applied makeup as I cried until I passed out. Perhaps if I became as delicate and "considerate" as Aurora, he might comfort me. Would Mauricio ever regret this? Would he ever treat me with the kindness he showed Aurora?

It didn’t matter anymore. I knew there was no future for us. When I came to, I realized I had lost my memory—but of all the faces I could remember, Mauricio’s was the one I'd forgotten.

I worked three double shifts at the garage just to buy a velvet-boxed cake for my wealthy girlfriend, Arleen. But when I pushed open the VIP room door, I saw her lover kissing her bare leg. She didn't push him away. Instead, she laughed and swirled her martini. "I only forgot Finn because I knew he would stay. He is a poor boy from Queens who follows me around like a loyal dog." Later that night, her lover intentionally crashed a Porsche to scare me, sending a piece of jagged metal into my skull. Lying in a growing pool of my own blood, I watched Arleen crawl out of the wreckage. She didn't even look at me. She threw herself at her uninjured lover, screaming for a medic. "He just got scraped by a piece of plastic. He is faking it. Deal with Jaquez first!" When I woke up, I wasn't free. Arleen had locked me in a private hospital wing with 24-hour security, planning to isolate me and keep me as her broken, captive toy forever. My blind, pathetic devotion finally froze into absolute disgust. I looked at the heart monitor next to my bed and grabbed an IV needle. I severed the sensor wire to trigger a flatline, slipped out the fire stairs while the nurses panicked, and burned my identity to ashes. This time, I was going to disappear to London, build my own empire, and watch hers burn.

Today was my father's grand second wedding, but for me, it was the anniversary of my mother's death. My new stepmother, Marley, who was only four years older than me, cornered me. To establish her dominance as the new Luna, she ordered her servants to force me to my knees and violently ripped my late mother's necklace from my neck. It was the only memento my mother had left me. Marley sneered, threw it to the ground, and shattered the gems. When I scrambled to pick up the broken pieces, she dug her high-heeled shoe into the back of my hand, mocking me as dirty trash. No one stepped in to help. I swore I would never become a weak, discarded she-wolf whose life depended on a man. Desperate to escape the suffocating wedding, I ran outside and stumbled right into the chest of a terrifying stranger. "No one should ever touch what is precious to you." My Alpha Saved His Mistress Instead of Me Novel Cover

The pack run had been Marcelo's idea. He'd announced it three days prior at the weekly council meeting, his Alpha tone leaving no room for debate. A show of unity, he'd called it. A reminder that the Black Moon Pack moved as one body, one purpose. I'd watched him from my seat at the far end of the table—the Luna's chair, though I'd stopped feeling like a Luna months ago—and said nothing. Petra Voss had nodded approvingly. The other council members had murmured their agreement. Rosalina, seated closer to Marcelo than protocol allowed, had smiled that soft, adoring smile she always wore around him. I should have known then. The territory's northern river was swollen from early spring melt, the current fast and mean.
