Chapter 2

CALEB'S POV

It was a quiet evening - quieter than most - though the bar itself was far from silent.

Grant sat across from me, as he had countless times before. He had been my closest friend since I first arrived in Southmere, a stranger with ambition and very little else. Now he was married, a father to a stubborn little boy who apparently hated bedtime, yet somehow we still found time for evenings like this. Old habits die slowly.

A country song drifted from the stage at the far end of the bar. The singer's voice was rough but steady, singing about lost love and second chances. Glasses clinked. Laughter rose from a corner table. The air smelled faintly of whiskey and wood polish.

But my attention wasn't there.

It was somewhere else entirely.

Perhaps on the letter I had written earlier that day - carefully worded, respectful, restrained - on behalf of Mr. George to the daughter no one in this town had seen in fifteen years.

Grant tilted his glass slightly and studied me.

"Your mind doesn't seem to be on the ambience tonight," he observed before taking a slow sip.

I looked at him briefly, then away again. My thoughts were unsettled, circling the same question over and over.

"What could make a daughter avoid her father for fifteen years?" I asked quietly.

Grant blinked, caught off guard.

"I'm talking about Mr. George," I added when he didn't respond immediately. "He is a good man. Everyone in Southmere would attest to that. He built Woods' Grapevine with his own hands. He employs half the town. He gives people chances." I shook my head slightly. "Why would his daughter abandon him? Why would he be the one writing to her first?"

Grant leaned back in his chair, considering.

"Well," he said slowly, "about that... no one really knows what happened. Mrs. George died, and not long after, the daughter left too."

"That still doesn't explain fifteen years," I muttered.

He didn't argue. He simply watched me.

"She must be irresponsible," I said after a moment, irritation rising in my chest. "That's the only explanation that makes sense. A father shouldn't have to ask his own child to come home."

Grant's gaze sharpened slightly.

"You're speaking as if you were there," he said.

"I don't need to have been there," I replied firmly. "Absence speaks for itself."

The music on stage shifted into a slower tune. Someone nearby laughed too loudly.

"When she arrives," I continued, lifting my drink, "I intend to give her a piece of my mind."

Grant didn't smile at that.

"Just make sure you know the whole story first," he said quietly.

I took a longer sip than necessary.

I was certain I did.

THIRD PERSON POV

The study was dimly lit, the fire in the hearth reduced to a faint glow.

Mr. George sat behind his desk, a bundle of letters resting in front of him. The papers were worn at the edges, folded and unfolded too many times.

He picked up one slowly.

"Father, please give Aunt Felicia permission for me to come to Southmere to see you. I am tired of Ironvale. I miss you so much."

His hand trembled slightly as he read the familiar handwriting.

He had received many like this.

At first, he had not opened them immediately. Then he began opening them but not responding. Eventually, he simply placed them in a drawer.

Not because he did not care.

But because he did not know how to face what they reminded him of.

Hannah had her mother's eyes.

After Abigail died, those eyes became unbearable to look at. Every time Hannah stood before him, grief rose fresh and sharp. He told himself he needed time. He told himself distance would protect them both.

Instead, it created silence.

Hannah wrote and wrote and wrote.

Until she stopped.

He removed his glasses and pressed his fingers against his lips, steadying himself. The illness had weakened his body, but regret weakened him more.

A soft click behind him made him straighten slightly.

"Again, George?"

Theodore stood at the doorway, holding a jug hot tea for the cold evening. She had been with him longer than most of the furniture in the house - small in frame, strong in will, incapable of flattery.

"What else can I do," he said quietly, placing the letters on the desk, "than stare at what I refused to see when it mattered?"

Theodore stepped closer.

"You were hurting," she said.

"You lost a wife," she replied, her voice low.

"And she lost her mother," He countered gently. "And then, not long after, she lost her father too."

He closed his eyes briefly.

"As a father, I failed her," he admitted. "I created the distance between us. If she chooses not to come... I will understand."

"No, George," Theodore said firmly, walking closer. "Do not speak like that."

He looked up at her.

"With the way you are going," she continued bluntly, "do you think she will come and find you alive? If you keep drowning yourself in the past, the poor girl will arrive and meet only a grave."

A faint, tired smile touched his lips. Theodore's bluntness had never softened with time.

"That is the truth," she added. "You cannot undo fifteen years tonight. But you can try by not thinking too much."

He looked down at the letters again, memories flashing uninvited - Hannah standing at the study door years ago, her hands clenched, her voice trembling as she begged not to be sent away.

He had avoided her eyes then.

He could not bear the resemblance.

"I have brought your medication," Theodore said, interrupting his thoughts. She placed the small glass and pills before him. "Take them. Stop punishing yourself before anything has happened."

He hesitated, then obeyed.

Theodore gathered the letters carefully and placed them back into the drawer - not hidden entirely, but out of immediate reach.

"Let Hannah come first," she said as she closed it. "When she comes, then you may decide how to beg forgiveness."

He stared at the drawer long after she left the room.

Outside, the wind moved through the vineyards of Southmere, whispering through leaves that had witnessed years of silence.

For the first time in a long while, hope felt frightening.

Because hope meant she might actually walk through that door again.

And he did not know whether he deserved it.
