THE DAUGHTER'S RETURN! Chapter 1

CALEB HOLLOWAY

Trust is heavier than money.

And in the ten years I have managed Woods' Grapevine, I have carried both carefully in my hands.

I sat behind my desk that morning, studying the ledger from the previous week - sales, profits, supply numbers - running my eyes over every detail. Nothing escaped me. Nothing could afford to. Mr. George trusted me with this business, and that trust meant more to me than the figures written in ink.

Money can be earned again. Trust, once broken, rarely returns.

A knock came at the wooden door.

"Come in," I said without lifting my head.

The door opened and one of the workers stepped inside.

"Good morning, Mr. Holloway. There's a young man outside. He says he's here to apply for work at the Grapevine."

I finally looked up.

"That's good," I said. "It means our reputation speaks for itself. Let him in."

Moments later, the boy stepped into my office. He looked barely eighteen - tall, but thin in the way hardship carves a person too early.

"Good morning, sir," he greeted nervously.

I gestured to the chair opposite me. "Sit."

He obeyed immediately.

I leaned back slightly, studying him. "How can Woods' Grapevine help you?"

"I came to look for a job, sir."

His voice carried hope - and desperation.

"Why here?" I asked. "Why not somewhere else?"

He swallowed. "Woods' Grapevine is one of the fastest growing businesses in Southmere. I want to work somewhere stable. I want to use my skills... and save money for my education."

That answer made me look at him a little longer.

"This business runs on discipline," I said evenly. "I need workers who can control themselves. Do you drink? Smoke? Use drugs?"

"I drink occasionally, sir. But I don't smoke. And I don't do drugs."

Honesty. Not perfect - but honest.

"What's your name?"

"Emmanuel Clifford."

"You start tomorrow. Eight o'clock. Be punctual. Your appointment letter will be ready."

For a second, he did not move. As though he had not expected mercy to arrive so quickly.

Then his face broke into a smile he clearly tried to suppress. He stood abruptly.

"Thank you, sir. I won't disappoint you, sir. Thank you."

He said it more times than necessary before finally stepping out.

When the door closed, I found myself smiling faintly.

I remembered being his age.

Fresh out of college. My mother ill at home. Bills stacking higher than pride would allow me to admit. I had walked through these same gates with borrowed shoes and a rehearsed confidence that cracked the moment Mr. George asked me a question I hadn't prepared for.

When he gave me a chance, I nearly embarrassed myself jumping in the courtyard.

He didn't just give me employment.

He gave me dignity.

I reached for a blank employment letter and carefully wrote Emmanuel Clifford across it. My handwriting was steady, deliberate. I reviewed the terms, the conditions, the starting wage.

Then I stood.

There was still one thing I refused to assume - Mr. George's signature.

**************************

The castle felt quieter these days.

Too quiet.

Illness has a way of silencing even the strongest walls.

Mr. George's chamber door was slightly open. I paused at the entrance before knocking. The doctor was inside, conducting one of his routine examinations.

I did not mean to listen - but silence makes every sound louder.

The rustle of medical instruments. The soft clearing of the doctor's throat. The controlled breathing of a man fighting his own body.

I stepped inside quietly.

Mr. George sat upright in bed, propped against pillows. His once broad shoulders seemed narrower now. His right hand rested stiffly against the blanket. The left trembled faintly.

The doctors called it ALS - a progressive muscular disease that steals movement piece by piece, like a thief patient enough to return every night.

I had researched it myself when the diagnosis first came.

There is no cure.

Only management. Only delay.

The doctor finished his checks and gave me a look before speaking. It was the kind of look physicians learn to perfect - professional, measured, but not hopeful.

"Ensure he takes his medications exactly as prescribed," the doctor said quietly to me.

"I will," I replied.

After he left, the room seemed larger.

Quieter.

"He exaggerates," Mr. George muttered lightly, adjusting his glasses with visible effort. "I am not as fragile as he believes."

His voice was still strong. But it carried fatigue.

"Of course not, sir," I answered.

He noticed the folder in my hand.

"So, Caleb," he said. "What brings you here?"

I stepped closer and handed him the employment letter.

"A new employee, sir. I came for your signature."

He studied the document. His left hand trembled as he lifted the pen.

"I've told you before," he said gently. "You have the authority to sign these yourself."

I stiffened slightly.

"That authority is yours, sir."

"For now," he replied.

The pen hovered over the paper, then lowered slowly.

"When I am gone," he continued, his tone shifting, "who will be in charge?"

The question struck deeper than I expected.

"I cannot take that position," I said carefully. "You have a daughter. It is her right."

The room fell silent.

His eyes shifted away from me - toward a place far beyond the walls.

I had never seen that look on his face before.

Regret.

Pain.

Loss.

"I'm sorry," I said quickly. "I should not have mentioned it."

I turned to leave.

"You will help me write to her."

I froze.

Slowly, I turned back.

"To... your daughter?" I asked before I could stop myself.

He looked at me through his glasses, and for the first time in Fifteen years, I saw something in his eyes I had never witnessed before.

Fear.

"Yes," he said quietly. "It is time she comes home."

The daughter no one in this castle had seen in over a decade.

"What has changed?" I asked gently.

He exhaled slowly.

"I do not want to leave this world with silence between us," he said. "I thought I had time. I thought pride could wait. But this illness..." He flexed his stiff hand with visible frustration. "It has taught me otherwise."

I said nothing.

There are moments when words become unnecessary.

He signed the employment letter with deliberate effort and handed it back to me.

"Prepare the study," he said. "Bring paper. I will dictate."

I nodded.

As I stepped out of the chamber, letter in hand, something settled heavily inside me.

This was not just about business succession.

This was about reconciliation.

Mr. George was not afraid of dying.

He was afraid of leaving things broken.

And somewhere out there - beyond Southmere, beyond these vineyards and stone walls - was a daughter who had no idea that her father was running out of time.

And I, Caleb Holloway, had just been handed the responsibility of writing to her.
