Chapter 2

Five years after freezing rain washed my blood into a Manhattan gutter, the phantom beep of a heart monitor still surfaced whenever a room became too quiet.

I pressed two fingers against the raised scar beneath my blouse and looked through the frosted glass wall of the adjoining office. Lily sat at a child-size table, attacking blue construction paper with a crayon. Her dark hair had escaped its braid, and the tip of her tongue rested at the corner of her mouth in fierce concentration.

She had survived.

So had I.

Felix slid a leather-bound folder across my desk. Gold letters on the cover read HALE MERIDIAN CAPITAL.

"CrossTech is out of runway," he said. "Sixty million dollars in debt matures in ten days. Their new product line failed, two suppliers have moved them to cash-on-delivery, and the banks will not extend another dollar."

I opened the financial summary. Red numbers crowded every page.

"How much voting power does Gideon still control?"

"Thirty-one percent. He pledged the rest to keep operations moving through the last three quarters. No strategic buyer will touch the company without control rights."

"And he has no idea who owns Hale Meridian?"

"None. Your public filings run through counsel, your photograph has never appeared in the financial press, and you have not used the Cross name since the accident. To him, we are simply the last firm willing to rescue a distressed asset."

I turned to the final page.

The proposed investment was eighty million dollars in exchange for forty-two percent of CrossTech, two board seats, budget veto rights, and immediate access to every internal account. Gideon would keep his title for the moment, but he would no longer control the company alone.

Five years earlier, Damian Roth had called 911 forty-two seconds after his sedan struck me. He had paid the emergency bills, found a specialist willing to save a pregnancy everyone else considered impossible, and helped me leave the city before Gideon learned I had lived.

But Hale Meridian was mine.

I built it from a small personal loan, one distressed acquisition, and years of eighteen-hour days. Damian opened doors when I had none. He never handed me the company, and I never let gratitude become ownership.

I signed the authorization with my gold fountain pen.

"Release the first twenty million when the agreement is executed," I said. "The balance stays conditional."

Felix's mouth tilted. "You are going to make him earn it."

"I am going to learn whether he has changed."

A soft knock sounded at the side door. Naomi leaned in. "Lily has fifteen minutes before her reading lesson."

"Thank you."

Lily looked up and waved her blue crayon at me. My chest tightened with the old, familiar mixture of love and terror. Gideon had once dismissed her as a cluster of cells. He had never heard her laugh, never held her through a fever, never watched her insist that every turtle in every picture needed a hat.

He had forfeited those things before he knew their value.

"They're here," Felix said, checking his tablet.

I moved to the private viewing room behind a carved ebony screen. Narrow slats gave me a fragmented view of the reception suite while keeping my face hidden. Owen, Hale Meridian's lead negotiator, waited at the glass conference table.

The doors opened.

Gideon entered in a charcoal suit, rigid as ever. Serena clung to his arm. A diamond the size of a thumbnail flashed on her left hand. Gideon wore the silver camellia cuff links I had given him for his thirtieth birthday.

The sight should not have hurt after five years.

It did.

Owen pushed the contract toward them. "Hale Meridian will wire the initial capital today. In return, the firm receives forty-two percent voting control. All major expenditures, debt transactions, and executive compensation require our approval."

Gideon scanned the pages without touching them.

"The quarterly marketing budget will be reduced by forty percent," Owen continued. "CrossTech will also withdraw sponsorship from next month's Frost Foundation gala."

Serena's hand struck the table. "That event is already announced. The press expects Gideon and me to host."

"We accept the cuts," Gideon said.

She turned on him. "You cannot be serious."

"No one else offered terms. We accept."

Serena drew a breath and reshaped her expression into a polished smile. "Then perhaps your employer would join us for dinner. We would like to thank her personally."

I pressed the microphone button. A voice modulator softened my natural pitch before it reached the ceiling speakers.

"Would Mr. Cross abandon any deal to protect you, Miss Frost?"

Serena startled and searched the room. "Who is that?"

"The investor," Owen said.

She lifted her chin toward the nearest speaker. "Gideon and I do not require tests. We are getting married next month."

"Then this should be simple. The first twenty million transfers today. The remaining sixty will be released after Mr. Cross accompanies me to dinner tomorrow night."

Silence filled the room.

"Alone," I added. "No lawyers, assistants, or fiancée."

Serena gripped Gideon's sleeve. "Tell her no. We will find another lender."

Gideon stared at the screen as if he could force my face through the wood. "Where?"

Her fingers tightened. "You are negotiating the terms of cheating on me."

"It is a business meeting."

"With a woman demanding you come alone?"

"It is the only offer keeping CrossTech solvent."

"You promised we were partners."

Gideon finally looked at her. "Partners share risk. You share the benefits. Wait in the car."

The humiliation on her face was almost identical to the one she had once enjoyed on mine.

Serena snatched her bag and stormed out. The doors slammed behind her.

Gideon did not follow.

"What does your employer want from me?" he asked.

Felix entered and placed a matte-black hotel key card on the table.

"The Apex Hotel," he said. "Presidential Suite, Room 1908. Tomorrow at nine."

Gideon picked up the card. His knuckles whitened around it.

"Tell her I will be there."

Behind the screen, I released the microphone and watched the man who had thrown me into the rain choose his company over another woman.

Power had always decided where Gideon's loyalty went.

Tomorrow, he would learn that the power belonged to me.
