Chapter 2

Ironveil was not what I imagined.

I had built a picture in my head during the journey. Crumbling stone, rotting wood, the visual decay of a place that had forgotten hope. Something that matched the stories. Something proportional to the fear his name produced in grown men.

Instead the gates were iron and immaculate. The courtyard stones were swept.

The torches were fresh. Everything that could be controlled had been controlled with a precision that felt almost aggressive as though the estate itself was compensating for the thing it housed.

I stepped out of the carriage.

No one moved to help. No one spoke.

Two dozen wolves lined the courtyard in human form, still as stone, watching me climb down in my torn borrowed dress with an expression I recognized immediately.

Assessment. The particular cold appraisal of people deciding what you were worth before you opened your mouth.

I had grown up inside that look. I knew how to walk through it.

Head up. Eyes forward. Gave them nothing.

The woman at the top of the steps was called Heda.

Lean, silver-streaked, with a face that had made peace with hard things by refusing to feel them. She looked at me the way you looked at a structural problem - not with cruelty, but with the particular exhaustion of someone who would now have to deal with it.

"You're not Mira Ashveil," she said.

"No," I said.

"Does he know?"

I thought of the road. The curtain. Those cold gold eyes finding me in the dark before I even arrived.

"Yes," I said.

Something moved through her face too quickly to name. She turned and walked inside without another word.

I followed.

Behind me I heard the wolves in the courtyard begin to murmur. Low voices, fragments, not quite hidden.

"How long do you give her?"

"Three days. Four if she's lucky."

"The last one lasted three."

I kept walking.

My room surprised me.

I had expected a cell. Cold stone, bare walls, the architecture of a man who wanted his prisoners to understand their situation at a glance.

Instead the room was large and firelit with a real bed, real linens, and a window that looked over a garden strangled by winter but still - technically a garden.

On the chair by the fire: a plain dark dress, folded neatly. My size exactly.

I stood in front of it for a long moment.

Someone had known my measurements before I arrived. Someone had looked at the information about the substitute bride - the nobody, the spare, the girl sent instead of her sister and quietly made sure she had something that fit.

I didn't know what to do with that.

I changed. I ate the food that arrived on a tray without ceremony. I moved through the first hours of my new life with the careful numbness I had spent years building.

The survival skill of a girl who had learned that feeling things too fully was a luxury she couldn't afford.

I had one job now. The same job I'd always had.

Survive.

The bullying started on the second day.

I was walking the ground floor corridor mapping the layout, memorizing exits, doing what I always did in new hostile territory when three women stepped out of a side room and blocked my path.

They were she-wolves. High ranked, by the way they carried themselves. The kind of women who had never once in their lives been the spare.

The one in front was tall, copper-haired, with the sharp smile of someone who had perfected cruelty into an art form.

Her name, I would later learn, was Reva.

The Alpha's former chosen companion.

The woman who had expected to be his mate before the curse made that impossible.

She looked me up and down the way you examined something that had been left on your doorstep by mistake.

"So you're the substitute," she said. Not loudly. She didn't need to be loud.

I said nothing.

"The Ashveil spare." She tilted her head. "I heard your own family didn't bother to say goodbye."

The women flanking her exchanged a look.

A small shared smile, the intimacy of people who had done this before.

I kept my face still. This was not the first time someone had tried to use my family's indifference as a weapon against me.

My father and sister had given people that ammunition my entire life.

I had learned a long time ago not to flinch when they used it.

"He'll destroy you," Reva said. Conversational. Almost kind. "The last one was three times the wolf you'll ever be and she lasted three days. You?" She laughed softly. "I give you two."

She stepped aside. Walked past me close enough that her shoulder hit mine hard, deliberate, the kind of impact designed to be just below the threshold of something you could formally object to.

The other two followed. One of them knocked the small candle from the wall bracket as she passed, plunging that section of corridor into dark, and neither looked back.

I stood in the sudden darkness and breathed slowly.

In. Out.

I had survived nineteen years of that.

I would survive this.

What I didn't expect was the voice from the other end of the corridor.

Low. Male.

"You didn't flinch."

I turned.

A man leaned against the far wall with his arms crossed, watching me with the particular stillness of someone who had been there long enough to see everything and had chosen, deliberately, not to intervene.

He was lean and dark-eyed with the kind of face that kept its thoughts completely private.

He wore Ironveil black but no rank insignia which meant either he had no rank or he was so far above it that marking himself had become unnecessary.

Something told me it was the second one.

"Most people flinch," he said.

"Most people have something to protect," I said.

He looked at me for a long moment. Something shifted in those dark eyes not warmth exactly. More like the recalibration of an assumption.

A man updating a calculation he thought he had already completed.

He pushed off the wall and walked away without another word.

I didn't know his name yet.

I didn't know that he was Kael - the Alpha's Beta, the most feared second in Ironveil, the man who had watched every previous mate candidate arrive and quietly calculated how long before they broke.

I didn't know that I was the first one he had stayed to watch.

I didn't know any of that yet.

What I knew was this: somewhere above me, in the north wing that everyone avoided, the cursed Alpha was awake.

I could feel it the way you felt a storm before it arrived - a pressure in the air, a heaviness, a sense of something immense and barely contained existing in close proximity.

And the skin on the side of my neck became warm again.

Still burning.

Still waiting.

As though his curse already knew what I was, even if neither of us did yet.
