Chapter 5

After completing the autopsy, Evan drew a conclusion.

I'd been abused for over ten hours before getting killed by having my throat slit. Then, my head was chopped off, and my body became a dog's chew toy.

Due to the missing kidneys, Evan assumed the perpetrators belonged to an organ trafficking ring.

The police were running a DNA test on the fetus in an attempt to locate the father. Evan took his gloves off and decided to head home to await the results.

He didn't return to our home, however, and neither did he go back to his assigned dormitory. Instead, he went to an apartment near the police station. When he opened the door, he was greeted by the sight of Carmen sitting on the couch, reading a book.

Once she saw Evan, she held her arms open. Her voluptuous body was slightly visible beneath her sheer nightgown.

Evan walked over to the couch and hugged her. He took a deep breath as he rested his head against her nape.

"How did the autopsy go?"

"The victim was a pitiful young woman. According to our preliminary findings, we suspect it's the work of an organ trafficking ring."

Evan couldn't see Carmen's reaction, but as I was standing behind him, I could.

When she heard Evan say that the perpetrators were suspected to be from an organ trafficking ring, she raised a brow and had a strange smirk on her face.

Out of the blue, I recalled something I'd forgotten. While I'd been tied to the bed and assaulted, someone masked from the nose up flashed that very same smile at me as I screamed and struggled.

Before leaving, she'd adjusted the camera to make sure it faced me before saying to the men, "Lyra here likes it rough. You don't need to hold yourselves back with her."

The guys became even rougher with me. It was as if they were in a frenzied trance.

Once I remembered this, I shrieked in fury and lunged at Carmen, but I simply passed right through her. My anger had no effect on her.

Carmen had leaned in close to Evan's neck to kiss him, but just then, his phone rang. That put an end to their steamy moment.

Evan had no choice but to take the call, which was from my younger brother, Dean Harding.

"Where's Lyra?" Dean demanded.

Dean had never liked Evan. After finding out that Evan and I had basically been living separately, his attitude toward Evan became even harsher.

"How should I know where your sister has run off to? Relax. If she's dead, the police would've asked me to come in and identify her body," Evan retorted indifferently while fondling Carmen's hand.

"Get lost! Lyra's pregnant! Where would she have gone? I haven't been able to get in touch with her for three days now. If anything happens to her, I'll make you pay for it!" Dean roared before dropping the call.

Evan was perplexed, but the fact that Dean said I was pregnant caught his attention.

Claiming that he wanted to shower, Evan excused himself to the bathroom and gave me a call. It went unanswered, so he left me a voice message.

I was standing right beside him, but he was never going to get a response from me.

In the middle of the night, Evan's phone rang. He was being summoned back to the police station as they'd gotten the DNA results back.

Evan gave Carmen a kiss on the forehead before changing into his clothes and rushing off.

As soon as he entered the autopsy room, he saw the box with the fetus on the autopsy table, along with a report.

"We've got the DNA results back?" he asked.

Shaun hesitated as if he didn't know how to answer. He stared at Evan with a complicated look in his eye.

"We took a sample of the fetus' DNA and compared it to our DNA database…"

Still standing beside Evan, I covered my mouth. I was so nervous that I could almost feel as though my heart would leap out of my body.

Evan wasn't faring too well either. He'd turned pale as the uneasy feeling he had intensified.

"Who is the father?" he questioned shakily.

With great difficulty, Shaun replied, "The father is…"
