Chapter 2

ALESSIA

The flight was three hours of silence and cloud.

I didn't sleep. I sat with my forehead against the window and watched the ground disappear and tried to understand what had just happened to my life. The cabin was full and warm and smelled of recycled air and other people's ordinary days, and I was aware, with peculiar distance, that I was the only person on this plane whose entire future had dissolved this morning.

I kept thinking about small things. The way Ethan's expression had flickered - just once - when I told him he didn't know what I would become. Whether that flicker was real or whether I had invented it because I needed to believe I had done something other than collapse. The way Mia had walked in with that tray without looking at me. Three years of bringing me tea, of knowing which days were hard and which were harder - and she had not looked at me.

The way Lillian had looked away when I asked how long.

I am not a person who has ever found it easy to hate. But I was discovering I had more capacity for it than I had known.

When the wheels touched down at Shadowcrest International, it was early evening. The sky was the deep gold of a summer day finishing itself cleanly - a color that seemed, irrationally, too kind for what I was arriving with. I cleared security, collected my single suitcase, and walked out into the terminal.

I knew this city. I had spent enough Christmases here that the layout lived somewhere deeper than memory - closer to instinct. Logan's apartment was in the north quarter, near the Academy grounds. I pulled out my phone, ready to call him, and stopped with my thumb over his name.

If I called, I would have to explain. And if I explained, I would have to say it out loud: Ethan switched brides. He paid me to sew the gown. He showed the quads' gifts to the entire chapel. He made me nothing in front of everyone who was supposed to witness me becoming something.

I wasn't ready to say it out loud. Not yet. Not over a phone.

I hailed a taxi and gave the address.

The address was correct. The building was not what I remembered.

Logan's old apartment complex had been a modest three-story block - functional, the kind of place a scholarship student keeps because the location is convenient and the rent is manageable. What the taxi pulled up to was something else entirely. Glass and steel, immaculately maintained, surrounded by grounds landscaped with the intentionality of wealth that has decided it deserves beauty and acted accordingly. A long driveway. A fountain. Lights along the path just beginning to switch on in the descending evening.

Four cars in the garage. None of them were Logan's. Logan drove a sensible, slightly dented sedan he'd owned since graduation and refused to replace because it still ran fine. None of these were fine. These were extraordinary.

I paid the driver and stood looking at the building, recalculating. Then I tried calling. It rang out. I tried again. Voicemail.

I picked up my suitcase and walked toward the entrance. I knew his apartment number from years of letters: Room 38. Third floor. If he wasn't there, I would sit outside his door and wait. I had nowhere else to go.

I climbed the stairs. At the third floor, I stopped before Room 38, took one breath - the kind you take before something you cannot undo - and knocked.

The door opened.

Not Logan.

The man in the doorway was tall enough that I had to tilt my chin up to see his face, and what I saw was Aiden - Aiden at twenty-three, five years older than the last time I had stood this close to him, bare-chested and barefoot with black training shorts and an expression of complete, undisguised astonishment.

I had forgotten, in three years of telling myself I had moved on, what it felt like to be in the same room as him. I had remembered something milder. Something more manageable.

This was not manageable.

"Alessia." He said my name the way you say a word you have kept in your mouth for a long time without letting yourself say it. Carefully. Like something that might dissolve if handled wrong. "Are you here for that holiday visit you promised us three years ago?"

The holiday. The bag. Luna for the Holiday. Heat crawled up the back of my neck.

"No," I managed. One word. The only one I had.

His jaw tightened. He stepped back slightly - not away, but making space without retreating. "Then what happened?" His eyes moved across my face rapidly, the instinct of someone trained to look for damage. "Did he do something to you?"

I had not spoken to these men in three years. I had made myself forget the particular quality of Aiden's attention - the way it had always felt less like being looked at and more like being known. He had said eleven words to me and already arrived at the truth.

Before I could answer, a voice came from inside.

"Who's at the door?"

Deep. Resonant. Familiar in a way that hit somewhere beneath recognition.

Carter appeared behind Aiden - wet from a shower, a towel at his waist, water still tracking down his chest, holding a coffee mug with the self-possession of a man who considers it everyone else's job to be flustered. Broader than I remembered. Calmer. The same carefully composed expression I had catalogued at fifteen, the one that had always made me feel like he was solving something when he looked at me.

The composure dropped the moment he saw my face. Just for a second. Then it was back - but I had seen it go.

"Well," he said quietly. Not to me. To no one in particular.

Then Jasper - shirtless, hair undone, a guitar over one shoulder, amber eyes wide with surprise already reprocessing itself into something more manageable. He looked at me. His mouth opened, then closed. He managed: "Ah." Which, from Jasper, meant more than most people's paragraphs.

And then Ryker. He had come from somewhere deeper in the apartment, slightly breathless, as if he'd moved quickly when he heard voices. He stopped in the doorway behind the others and looked at me with those ice-blue eyes and said nothing at all. Just looked. Something in his expression was so carefully still that it frightened me the way stillness in very powerful things always does.

Four men. Five years. The same pull I had spent three years convincing myself I had invented.

"I'm looking for Logan," I said. Steadier than I had any right to. "My brother."

"He's not here," Aiden said. "He's teaching a night session at the Academy." He tilted his head. "You didn't call him before you came."

"My day got complicated."

Carter set down his coffee mug and stepped forward, resting his hand on my shoulder - warm and steady, completely without ceremony, the way you touch someone when you have decided words are insufficient. The contact went through me like a current.

"Come inside," Aiden said. Command shaped to fit around my choice. "You're shaking."

I was. I hadn't noticed.

I stepped over the threshold, and the apartment wrapped around me - warm, smelling of leather and woodsmoke and something wild underneath, something that registered before the mind had words for it. Their scent. The same one I remembered from five Christmases ago.

For a moment, standing there with my suitcase, I felt an emotion I did not immediately have a name for. Then I recognized it.

Arrival.

I had not felt like I arrived anywhere in three years.

Jasper appeared from the kitchen with a mug of tea - hot, carefully made, no sugar, which meant he had been carrying that detail about me for five years, which I chose not to examine too closely. When he handed it to me, his fingers grazed mine. He didn't pull away immediately.

"Thank you," I whispered.

"You still say that too much." He was trying to be casual. He almost succeeded.

Carter leaned against the counter, watching me with unhurried attention. "You look different," he said. "Older. More beautiful."

"Three years is a long time," I said.

"Three," he said, without inflection. "You visited at fifteen. Three years ago, you stopped talking to us." A pause. "I counted."

My pulse spiked. He had counted.

Ryker moved toward the balcony. As he passed, he stopped very close without touching me. "What happened today, Alessia?"

"I don't want to say it yet."

He held my gaze. "All right," he said. "We're patient." His hand grazed my arm as he passed - so brief it barely registered. But it was the opposite of Ethan's grip. Everything Ethan had done today was about taking. This was simply offered, left on the surface of my skin without any demand that I respond.

Aiden appeared at my side. "You'll stay until Logan gets back. It's almost Christmas. Spend the holidays with us." He paused, and something in his expression shifted - the careful composure developing a crack it could not quite close. "And now that you're free - we can take care of you. The way you were always supposed to be taken care of."

I caught the weight behind the words and felt it settle.

"Is that a threat?" I asked.

The corner of his mouth moved. Not quite a smile, but close enough to change the geography of his face.

"It's a promise," he said.
