THE CHRISTMAS LUNA SATISFYING THE ENIGMAS

On the day she was to become Luna, Ethan betrays her—stealing her wedding gown for another woman, framing her for infidelity, and turning violent. Broken and hunted, she runs to the only protectors she has left: her brother's best friends, four billionaire Alphas known as the Enigmas. Aiden, Carter, Jasper, and Ryker offer her safety as their Holiday Luna, but the price is steep—satisfying all four wolves, day and night. When Ethan comes to reclaim her, she refuses to be weak again. She cuts her hair, binds her chest, takes a false name, and infiltrates Shadowcrest Military Academy, the all-male fortress where her Alphas teach. But living among four dangerous wolves who barely control themselves around her may destroy her first. The danger is no longer Ethan. It's them.

Chapter 3

ALESSIA

I borrowed a shirt from Logan's old room - oversized, soft with age, the kind washed so many times it had forgotten its original color and become something gentler. I changed, splashed cold water on my face until the worst redness faded, and gave myself exactly two minutes to feel everything I had been holding at a distance since the chapel.

I used both minutes.

Then I pressed my palms flat against my thighs and walked back out.

They were in the living room - all four of them, voices low, with the specific quality of quiet that means something important is being decided. The conversation stopped the moment I appeared. Four heads turned.

I was still the girl from the chapel. But I was also standing in Logan's shirt in the apartment of four Alphas who had arranged themselves, without explicit discussion, into something that looked like a perimeter. Around me. Facing out.

"This is a good idea," Aiden said. He was clearly trying to convince himself as much as anyone else.

"Logan would want us to look after her," Jasper offered.

"Looking after her and-" Ryker stopped himself. A muscle in his jaw worked. "They're different things."

"I'm in the room," I said.

Three of them looked slightly abashed. Ryker met my eyes without any abashment whatsoever, which I found, unreasonably, more reassuring than the guilt.

"We know," he said. "We're talking about you anyway."

"I need to understand what I'm deciding," I said. "You said there would be honesty."

"After dinner," Aiden said.

"You keep postponing."

"I keep meaning it." He moved toward the kitchen. "You should eat. You've been running on adrenaline since this morning."

He wasn't wrong. The moment he mentioned food, I became aware that I hadn't eaten since yesterday evening - I had been too nervous this morning to manage breakfast. My body registered this fact with sudden, inconvenient urgency.

Aiden cooked with the relaxed competence of someone for whom this is automatic - handing things to Jasper without looking, correcting Carter's seasoning in a tone that was neither condescending nor gentle but simply practical. Watching him in a kitchen reconfigured something about the image I had been carrying of him. At fifteen, Aiden had been composed to the point of formality. This was a different kind of composed - lived-in, effortless, real.

More dangerous, in the specific way that real people always are.

I set the table without being asked. It was something to do with my hands and a way of existing in the space without feeling like a guest. Jasper stole the last of the bread at dinner. Carter told him, with some profanity, that he was predictable. Ryker ate with focused silence. Aiden poured water into my glass before his own.

The touches were accumulating. Carter's hand on my shoulder. Jasper's fingers with the tea. Ryker's arm as he passed. Aiden's water poured first. None of them crossed any line. None of them offered expectation. They were the kind that builds - the way individual threads become fabric.

I was aware of them building.

When the kitchen was done - I had helped with the washing up because I needed the ordinary rhythm of it - we moved to the balcony. The city below was alive with summer-night energy. Lights, voices, traffic shed of its daytime urgency. I leaned on the railing and tried to locate myself in it.

"There is a prophecy," Aiden said.

He stood beside me. The others arranged themselves - Carter to my left, Jasper on the railing, Ryker against the wall with arms folded.

"Our father's seer delivered it the year we turned eighteen. The year before you visited." He kept his eyes on the city. "It said our wolves - Enigma wolves - require a Luna to stabilize. One specific Luna. One who had already been marked." He paused. "We felt the marking when you were thirteen. When you arrived with Logan and sat on the stairs and fell asleep with a sketchbook in your lap."

I remembered that. I had been embarrassed about it.

"You were thirteen," Carter said quietly. "We were eighteen. We decided to wait."

"And do nothing that couldn't be undone," Jasper added. "Hence the bag. The necklace. Something that said - we're here, we're waiting - without saying anything you couldn't hear yet."

"And then I left," I said.

"Ethan took you," Ryker said. Correction without accusation, but with precision. "You didn't leave. He arranged for you to be taken."

The cold again. "You knew?"

"We found out after," Aiden said. "When Logan came to us. We understood then that Ethan knew about the prophecy. He was using you as leverage - against Logan, against us." He finally looked at me. "So we sent Lillian."

I stared at him.

"We funded her," Carter said. "We gave her exactly what she needed to exploit what Ethan was vulnerable to. We arranged the wedding switch. We set up the conditions for this morning."

I could not speak.

"We wanted you free," Jasper said. He sounded, for the first time all evening, genuinely uncertain. "We thought - if Ethan chose Lillian publicly, it would sever the bond he'd claimed. Give you an exit that didn't require you to fight him directly."

"We didn't account for how he would do it," Ryker said. Something dark moved through his expression. "We didn't tell you because we were afraid you'd warn him. Or decide it wasn't worth the cost."

I looked at each of them.

"You arranged the worst day of my life," I said.

"We freed you from a man who was using you as a strategic piece," Aiden said. "The method was cruel. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But the alternative was leaving you there."

"You could have told me."

"Yes," he said. "We should have." No deflection. No explanation wrapped around it like a shield. "I'm sorry."

The sincerity of it was disarming. I was not ready to be disarmed yet. But it registered - the fact that he said it simply, without qualification.

I looked back at the city.

"What happens to you," I said, "without a Luna?"

"The Enigma wolf runs hotter than standard Alpha instinct," Carter said carefully. "It's more demanding. Requires specific grounding. Without it, the feral state accelerates. Somewhere in our twenties or thirties, we lose the ability to moderate." He said it with the precision of someone who has spent years making peace with an uncomfortable truth. "We become dangerous. To everything."

"And I can prevent it."

"You are the only one who can," Aiden said. "The prophecy was specific. It was always you."

I thought about the drawer in Ethan's estate. The pink bag and the diamond necklace, kept for three years because I could not bring myself to throw them away. I had called it sentimentality. I had called it nothing. But I had kept them - through three years of being someone else's almost-Luna - and I had never been able to explain why.

Now I could.

"Tell me what it costs," I said. "Being your Luna. What does it actually require?"

Another silence. The most significant of the evening.

"Not tonight," Aiden said. "Some things need daylight. And you have had enough for one day."

I considered arguing. Then I considered that my body had been running on nothing since nine this morning, and that the city below was warm and luminous, and that I was - for the first time in three years - somewhere I did not have to perform anything for anyone.

"All right," I said. "Tomorrow."

I looked at all four of them one more time - these men who had waited five years and sent an imperfect rescue and said I'm sorry without flinching - and I thought about a pink bag in a drawer and a girl who could never explain why she kept it.

I thought I was beginning to understand.
