Chapter 1

ALESSIA

I had spent three years making myself small enough to fit inside Ethan's idea of perfect.

I learned to like my coffee the way he liked it - no sugar. I stopped wearing red because it made him "distracted at pack meetings." I folded my sketch pads into the back of my closet and told myself that being the Alpha's future Luna was a better dream than the ones I used to draw. I told myself this so many times it almost became true.

And then this morning, my wedding gown disappeared.

Not misplaced. Not borrowed. Gone. As if someone had reached into the last thing that was entirely mine and taken it. I spent two hours turning the estate inside out - every wardrobe, every locked room, every place a jealous maid might hide something out of spite. Nothing. By the time I accepted the gown was genuinely gone, I had forty minutes to dress in the emergency backup. A plain, stiff thing that didn't carry the six weeks of stitching and hoping I'd poured into the one I'd made myself.

I told myself it didn't matter. It was just a dress. What mattered was the man waiting at the altar.

I should have listened to that hollow feeling in my stomach.

The chapel was full. Every important face in New Orleans Pack seated in ivory pews, dressed in their finest, watching the entrance with the quiet anticipation of people gathered to witness something historic. I walked down the aisle with my bouquet and my backup dress and my best attempt at a smile, and I told myself the trembling in my hands was nerves. Bridal nerves. Normal.

Ethan was already at the altar. He didn't look at me when I approached.

I told myself that was nerves too.

Then he spoke - not to me, but to the room, his voice carrying easily off the chapel walls like he'd rehearsed this moment for weeks.

"I've always believed in having a contingency. A second option. In leadership, in strategy - and apparently, in love." A small, private smile. "Little did I know that contingency would become the only option worth taking."

The words detonated.

My bouquet slipped. I caught it - barely - but white petals tore free and drifted down across the marble like something dying slowly. I stared at them. My mind refused to catch up.

Contingency. Second option.

He was at his own wedding. My wedding. Why was he talking about contingencies?

He snapped his fingers. The sound was sharp and deliberate - the sound of a man who has been planning this moment and is pleased with how it arrived. The side door swung open.

And Lillian Matthews walked in.

I knew her face better than I knew my own. I knew the way she moved - that slow, satisfied stride, chin lifted, the smile that always looked like it was hiding a private joke at someone else's expense. I had sat across from her at a hundred dinners. I had cried to her after hard days. I had called her my sister when I had no other word that fit.

She was wearing my wedding gown.

Not something similar. Not something inspired by it. My gown - the one I had cut the pattern for alone on my sewing room floor at two in the morning, the one that had the quads' diamond accessories sewn into the neckline because my brother had said you deserve something extraordinary. I recognized every seam.

My legs turned to water. I grabbed the nearest pew hard enough that my knuckles went pale and forced myself to stay upright.

"What," I said. Not a question. My voice had no question left in it.

Lillian's eyes found mine across the chapel. And she smiled - the same smile she had given me at a hundred dinners, except now I could see exactly what it had always been hiding.

"You stole it." The words came out fractured. I had meant them to sound like an accusation, but they came out sounding like grief. "That's my gown."

I started forward. I only knew that I could not stand still while she walked toward the altar in the six weeks of my life I had stitched into silk.

Ethan's hand caught my arm. His grip was not gentle.

"Don't." One word. Flat. Like he was correcting a dog.

I turned to look at him - really look at him - and something cracked open in my chest, because the man standing beside me was not the man I had spent three years learning to love. The face was the same. The eyes were different. Cold where they had always been careful.

"What is this?" My voice was shaking. The whole chapel could hear it. "Ethan. What is this?"

"A correction," he said simply. "Lillian is my first love. She was always going to be my Luna. You were-" the smallest, most terrible pause "-an arrangement that no longer suits me."

The air left my lungs in a single brutal exit.

Around me, the congregation shifted - the rustle of fabric, the murmur of people who had come expecting a ceremony and were receiving something they would discuss for years. Someone near the back laughed, quickly silenced, but I heard it. I heard everything.

"I have been loyal to you for three years," I said. My voice cracked and held. "I stopped talking to people I loved. I stopped designing. I moved into your house at fifteen and I waited, Ethan - because you said you'd choose me-"

"I never said I would only choose you."

The silence that followed was different from all the silences before it. He meant it. He said it without cruelty or regret - just the bloodless delivery of a man stating something he had always considered obvious. And I understood, with cold clarity, that I had been building a life inside a story I was the only one writing.

"And about loyalty-" He turned toward Lillian. He snapped his fingers. A maid appeared.

My maid. Mia. She wouldn't look at me.

On the silver tray she carried sat two objects I recognized before I could stop recognizing them - a heart-shaped diamond pendant and a pink Hermès bag with faded gold lettering along the strap.

Luna for the Holiday.

I had been fifteen the last Christmas I spent in Shadowcrest. The quads had found the bag at a mall and laughed about the inscription - it was the only holiday-themed one, and since you're our favorite girl. I had kept those gifts because they were the last thing I had from before Ethan. From before I remade myself around someone else's shape.

"You told me you had no contact with the Phoenix brothers," Ethan said. His eyes had bled to a dark, furious red. "These were in your drawer. Three years. Hidden."

"They are gifts from my childhood. From my brother's friends. From when I was fifteen-"

"From men who have been in love with you since before I ever touched you." His voice cracked on the last word - the first genuine crack - and I realized with nauseating clarity that some part of this was real. He was genuinely afraid. He had simply chosen cruelty over vulnerability, the way he always did when something threatened him.

It did not make any of this forgivable.

"I was a child," I said quietly.

"I paid you three thousand dollars for the gown. Consider the commission settled."

He had paid me. For my own wedding dress. So that it would belong to him - so that he could do with it whatever he chose. So that I could not call any part of this mine.

I looked at Lillian. "How long?"

She understood. She looked away.

That was my answer.

I stepped closer to Ethan - close enough to keep this between us, close enough that only he could hear.

"Go ahead," I said. "Marry her. But know - I am not the girl you think you're discarding. You have no idea what I am going to become now that you've let me go."

His expression flickered. Just once. Something moved behind his eyes I could not name.

Then it was gone.

He turned back toward the altar. I turned toward the door. The chapel erupted behind me as I pushed into the summer light - voices, cameras, the sound of my own heels on marble. The sky outside was dull and grey and offered no comfort.

I walked toward the estate. I had forty-five minutes before someone followed. I used every one of them - packing fast, without sentiment, shoving t-shirts and jeans and the sewing kit Ethan had told me to throw away into my old suitcase. I found my savings pouch. I booked a flight.

I changed. I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time.

I will not cry for him again, I told my reflection.

I was already crying when I walked out the door. But I did not look back. The wedding music drifted from the chapel behind me as I reached the road. They were still celebrating. The world had not noticed that one of its people had just been erased from a story she had been writing for three years.

I gripped my suitcase and walked, and I thought: I am going to become something he doesn't have a word for.
