Chapter 3

A massive, mutated white python, as thick as a fire hydrant, lay coiled near her calves. Its scales shimmered in the firelight. A red, forked tongue flicked out, tasting the air.

The python's golden, vertically slit pupils locked onto her face. The musky, suffocating scent of a predator filled the space between them.

Serena stopped breathing. Her mind raced, calculating the distance to the door, the strike speed of the snake, and her chances of surviving the next ten seconds.

Serena forced her heart rate to slow down. She knew any sudden spike in adrenaline would mark her as prey. She slowly lowered her chin, breaking direct eye contact with the golden slits. She let her shoulders slump, projecting absolute submission.

The white python, Kilo, slid its massive head forward. The cold scales brushed against her bare ankle. It flicked its tongue against her skin, analyzing her scent. Finding no threat, the snake slowly retracted its head and settled back into a tight coil on the mattress.

Serena waited ten full seconds. She moved her legs with agonizing slowness, sliding them off the edge of the bed. Her bare feet touched the thick Persian rug.

The heavy oak door of the guest room swung open.

Silas rolled into the room in a custom-built, matte-black wheelchair. His security chief, Ian Foster, walked a step behind him, his face a mask of stone.

Silas stopped the chair. His eyes darted to the bed, then to Serena standing unharmed on the rug. A muscle in his jaw twitched. He had expected her to be screaming, or at least cornered by Kilo.

He reached into his tailored suit jacket, pulled out a thick manila folder, and tossed it onto the glass coffee table. It landed with a heavy slap.

"Who is paying you?" Silas's voice was a low, grating rasp. "Which Wall Street firm sent you to that warehouse?"

Serena walked over to the table. She picked up the folder and flipped it open. It was a comprehensive background check on "Serena Vance." Eighteen years old. Prep school dropout. Trailer park resident. A history of petty vandalism and a reputation as a goth delinquent.

She stared at the words. They meant nothing to her. It felt like reading a poorly written script for a character she had never met.

She dropped the folder back onto the glass. "Your intelligence network is garbage."

Silas's eyes darkened. He pressed a button on the armrest of his wheelchair. The overhead chandelier blazed to life, flooding the room with blinding, clinical light.

Serena squinted, raising a hand to shield her eyes.

"You look exactly like the trash in that file," Silas sneered, his gaze raking over her smeared, raccoon-like eyeliner and the thick, cakey foundation cracking on her cheeks.

A spike of irritation flared in Serena's chest. She didn't say a word. She turned on her heel and walked straight into the attached marble bathroom.

She turned on the gold faucet. The water was freezing. She pumped a handful of expensive cleansing oil from a glass bottle on the counter and scrubbed it ruthlessly into her skin.

The black eyeliner, the heavy shadows, and the cheap foundation dissolved, swirling down the drain in a muddy stream. She splashed the icy water over her face until her skin was raw and tingling.

She looked up at the mirror. The face staring back was porcelain pale, with high, aristocratic cheekbones and lips the color of crushed roses. Her eyes were a piercing, icy blue, holding the cold indifference of someone used to standing at the top of the food chain.

She grabbed a plush Hermes towel, roughly dried her face, and pushed her wet hair back. She walked back into the bedroom.

Silas looked up. His breath caught in his throat for a fraction of a second. His pupils dilated. The visual shock of the transformation hit him like a physical blow. The cheap delinquent was gone, replaced by a woman whose raw, unadorned beauty was sharp enough to draw blood.

Serena walked back to the coffee table. She tapped a manicured fingernail against a financial statement in the folder.

"This signature right here," she said, her voice crisp and authoritative. "The dates feel completely off, like they were hastily forged to fit a specific timeline. And the money flow shown on these pages... it's too clean. It's so unnaturally clean that it feels like a deliberate trap. Whoever fabricated this file didn't even bother to make the inconsistencies look organic. It's amateur hour."

Silas's fingers began to tap a slow, rhythmic beat against his wheelchair armrest. His eyes narrowed, stripping away his previous assumptions. The girl in front of him wasn't just a pretty face; she was spotting glaring anomalies in fabricated documents with an almost terrifying, instinctual precision.

Serena leaned closer, invading his personal space. "Give me access to a secure terminal. I need to find out who I actually am."

Silas let out a dry, humorless laugh. He opened his mouth to dictate his terms.

The sound of frantic, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Evan Foster, Ian's brother and Silas's aide, crashed through the doorway. His face was pale, and he was gasping for air.

"Sir," Evan choked out. "It's Leo. He's having an episode. He's in the nursery, and he's got a blade. We can't get near him."
