Chapter 2

"I've found the woman, sir. Her name is Kara Sexton—your wife, in name only."

His subordinate, Sean Reynolds, stood before him, holding a tablet. "She is, according to the records, the... illegitimate daughter of the Sexton family."

Domenick Benton didn't look up. He sat behind his expansive desk, the New York skyline a backdrop to his cold fury. His right leg was stretched out slightly, a subtle adjustment to ease the chronic ache from the accident.

Domenick's fingers tapped a slow, deliberate rhythm on the polished wood. He remembered the arrangement. A public relations marriage to clean up a family mess. A disposable bride.

"She was scheduled to meet you and the lawyers at ten this morning to sign the divorce papers," Sean continued. "She never showed up."

"Interesting," Domenick said, his voice devoid of emotion.

"Security footage shows her leaving the hotel through a service exit at 6:15 a.m. She was wearing... one of your trench coats, sir."

A flicker of something—not amusement, but a cold, predatory interest—crossed Domenick's face. A corner of his mouth lifted in a semblance of a smile that held no warmth.

"Keep looking. I want to know where she is."

Kara hadn't gone far.

She couldn't go back to the Sexton manor. She had nowhere else—nowhere, at least, that the Sextons knew about. So she took a cab straight to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

She chose this hospital deliberately. Not because it was close—but because it was where she kept her secret life. Her medical contacts, her hidden identity, her tools—all here. The Sextons had no idea she'd built a world outside their control.

She could have gone elsewhere. She had the means, buried under another name in a city far from here—money, contacts, a life she had built piece by piece and kept sealed off from the family that had thrown her away. But all of that was a door she refused to open. Not yet. To use it would be to show her hand, and she wasn't ready. So for now, the hospital would do.

The hospital was also the perfect place to gather information. Doctors and nurses talked. They heard things. She needed to know who had drugged her, who had put her in that hotel room, and why.

In the public restroom, she scrubbed her face raw, trying to wash away the memory of the night. She threw the heavy trench coat into the trash bin, a final, futile attempt to shed the violation. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror—her face pale, almost ghostly, dark circles shadowing her eyes. She raised a trembling hand and parted her bangs, sweeping the two strands of hair away from her face. Then she changed into the spare T-shirt, jeans, and a thin jacket she kept in a small locker on this floor—a precaution from her frequent visits.

She made her way to a private room on the VIP floor.

Her mother's old friend, Agnes Peterson, a woman with kind eyes and a warm smile, was sitting up in bed. She had been a friend to Kara's mother. Now, she was the closest thing Kara had to family.

"Child," Agnes said, her voice full of concern as she took Kara's hand. "You look terrible."

Kara forced a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted in the hallway. Shouts. The sound of something smashing. A nurse's panicked cry.

A young nurse burst into the room. "It's Mr. Ashford! Landon Ashford is having another episode!"

It was Landon Ashford, the Ashford family heir, who had been hospitalized for severe PTSD and intermittent psychotic breaks—and right now, he was in the grip of one.

Kara was on her feet instantly. The trembling, helpless girl from the hotel was gone. Gone—but not erased. Her hands were still shaking, and her stomach gave a slow, sour roll as the chaos in the hallway washed over her. Only hours ago she'd been the helpless one, and every instinct screamed at her to shrink back, to hide, to run.

But she didn't run. She couldn't. Not when someone was about to get hurt.

And not because she was noble. Because she needed a card to play. An Ashford heir in her debt was worth more than any jewelry.

She had spent years perfecting the mask of a fragile socialite, but in this hospital, with a life at stake, the facade was a luxury she couldn't afford. Beneath the fear, something older and colder was already taking over—the years of training her body remembered even when her mind wanted to fall apart. She knew of him. The Ashford heir, hospitalized for severe PTSD and intermittent psychotic breaks.

She breathed out once, slow and deliberate, until her hands went still. Then she moved.

She stepped into the corridor. The scene was chaos. Landon Ashford, a man built like a soldier, was tearing the hallway apart. Two security guards were keeping their distance, unable to approach. He held a jagged piece of a broken vase in his hand.

The attending physician, Dr. Miller, was sweating, about to order a forced sedative injection. But Landon was too agitated. The risk was enormous.

"Let me try," Kara said, her voice calm and steady.

Dr. Miller glanced at her, recognizing her as a frequent visitor. "Miss, it's too dangerous. He'll hurt you!"

"Thirty seconds," Kara said, her tone leaving no room for argument. "If it doesn't work, you can do it your way."

She shed her thin jacket, slowly approaching the raging man. Her eyes were serene, holding a strange, calming power.

"Get back!" Landon roared, brandishing the glass shard.

Kara didn't stop. Her voice was low, almost a hum. "Landon, look at me. Remember the hawk you saw in the desert in Afghanistan?"

The unexpected question made him hesitate. Just for a fraction of a second.

It was all she needed.

She moved like smoke. Her body flowed forward, her arm twisting at an impossible angle. Her fingers, swift and precise, pressed into a series of nerve clusters at the base of his neck, behind his ear, along his spine.

The movements were a blur, a cascade of motion too fast for the eye to follow.

Landon's violent struggles ceased instantly. The madness in his eyes dissolved into a weary confusion.

The shard of glass clattered to the floor.

Kara caught his slumping body, gently guiding him into a nearby chair.

The entire event had taken less than twenty seconds.

The hallway was utterly silent. Doctors, nurses, security—all stared, mouths agape.

Dr. Miller rushed forward, checking Landon's vitals. He was stable. Just... asleep.

He looked at Kara, his expression a mixture of awe and disbelief. "What... what was that? Some kind of Eastern massage?"

"A form of neuro-acupressure," Kara said simply, her voice flat. "He was overstimulated. He needs to rest."

She turned to leave, pulling her jacket back on, melting away before anyone could ask another question.

As she walked away, a cold smile touched her lips. An Ashford heir now owed her. That was a debt she would collect when the time was right.
