Kara ignored Dr. Miller's stunned calls behind her.

The taxi pulled up to the grand Victorian mansion. Kara walked through the front door and was immediately met with the sound of her stepsister's saccharine voice.

Her stepsister, Emilia Sexton—pretty, pampered, and practiced in the art of playing the victim—and her stepmother, Meredith, a woman whose polished elegance masked a ruthless, manipulative core, were cooing over a coffee table laden with gift boxes from Dior, Chanel, and Graff.

Emilia held up a velvet Graff box, opening it to reveal a river of diamonds. "Mother, the Bentons are so generous! This must be for me!"

"Of course it's for you, darling," Meredith purred. "You're the real jewel of this family."

They acted as if Kara wasn't even there.

"Those are for Mrs. Benton," Kara said, her voice cutting through their fantasy. "Legally, that's me."

Their smiles froze.

Emilia's face crumpled into a mask of pity. "Sister, how can you say that? We all know what this marriage is. Do you really think you deserve these things?"

Kara advanced on them, her gaze as sharp as a scalpel. "Whether I deserve them is not for you to decide. It's for the Bentons. What do you think they would say if they knew their wedding gifts were being claimed by an outsider?"

She put a deliberate, cruel emphasis on the word "outsider." Meredith flinched.

Kara watched them. She had seen this little drama play out a hundred times before. Meredith would try to manipulate her, Emilia would play the victim, and her father would take their side. But today, she had a different plan. She wasn't going to take their abuse quietly. She was going to make them look like the greedy, grasping thieves they were.

"Give me the necklace," Kara said, holding out her hand.

Emilia clutched the box to her chest, her eyes welling up. "Why must you be so aggressive? You were out all night, who knows what filthy things you were doing, and now you come back to steal from us?"

A cold, mirthless smile touched Kara's lips. "What I was doing? You two should know better than anyone."

The words were a slap. Meredith's face paled.

She saw the flicker of guilt in Meredith's eyes. The woman knew something about the hotel. Kara filed that away. She would use it later.

Kara wasted no more time. She reached for the box.

Emilia shrieked and recoiled, trying to shield the necklace. In her panicked movement, her hand slammed against the sharp corner of the glass coffee table.

The jewelry box flew from her grasp. The necklace slithered onto the carpet.

"Ah!" Emilia screamed, a genuine cry of pain this time. Blood welled from a deep gash on the back of her hand.

"Emilia! My baby!" Meredith shrieked, rushing to her daughter's side.

Kara watched the pathetic drama unfold, her expression unreadable. She bent down, calmly picked up the diamond necklace, and wiped it with a handkerchief from her purse.

She held it up in front of them, letting the diamonds catch the light.

"There," she said softly. "All clean now."

Meredith trembled with rage. "You vicious creature! You hurt your sister!"

Kara raised an eyebrow. "Did I push her? Or is a necklace simply more important to her than her own hand?"

She turned away, dropping the necklace into her handbag. "I'll go upstairs and pack," she said to Martha White, the Sexton family's longtime housekeeper, who had appeared in the doorway.

While Emilia sobbed and Meredith cursed, Kara walked coldly upstairs toward the attic, ignoring their clamor, not looking back even once, leaving the noise behind.

Upstairs, she began to formulate her plan. They thought they'd buried her in a marriage to a cripple. They had no idea that she was about to turn that "punishment" into her greatest weapon.
