The Billionaire I Slept With Became My Husband
Chapter 2
Chloe woke up gasping, her body slick with cold sweat. The nightmare was always the same: fragmented images of the hotel room, the suffocating scent of cedar and whiskey, and the powerful, faceless man. Her heart raced, a frantic bird trapped in her chest.
She reached for her phone. The screen lit up with more than a dozen missed calls and a string of texts from Tiffany.
"Chloe, where did you go last night? I came back and you were gone!"
"Are you okay? Call me back ASAP!"
The fake concern felt like acid in her throat. Chloe ignored them and opened a chat with the only family member who still genuinely cared—her younger brother, Sean.
"I'm fine," she typed, her fingers trembling. She hit send, then set the phone down, trying to slow her racing pulse.
Just as she was about to get up, the phone buzzed again. The screen flashed with Tiffany's name. Chloe stared at it for a long moment, her thumb hovering. Every instinct told her to decline—to block the number and never look back. But something else stirred beneath the disgust. A cold, sharp curiosity. She wanted to hear what lies Tiffany would spin this time.
She swiped to answer, but she said nothing. She pressed the phone to her ear, her breathing shallow, barely audible.
On the other end, there was a crackle of static, then Tiffany's sharp, excited voice cut through. But she wasn't talking to Chloe. "Mom, I'm telling you, it's done!"
Chloe's blood turned to ice. She held her breath.
A second voice answered—her stepmother, Brenda Hayes, dripping with cruel satisfaction. "Good girl. Was the old man happy? Did you get the pictures?"
There was a faint rustle, like someone shifting in a car seat. Tiffany giggled. "Don't worry, the paparazzi I hired got everything. But the lighting was terrible—you can barely see his face. Just a blurry silhouette. I figured we'd wait until she's even fatter and more pathetic, then leak the whole thing with a juicy headline. 'Heiress's Secret Scandal'—that'll destroy her for good. Let's see her try to compete with me now. Julian Sinclair is going to be mine!"
Chloe's mind raced. Why were they so loud? Then she realized—Tiffany must have put the phone on speaker and set it down. She had dialed Chloe's number, heard the click of an answer, but since Chloe hadn't spoken, she had assumed the line had simply dropped and was now continuing her conversation with Brenda as if nothing had happened.
Brenda's voice came again, impatient. "Alright, just don't forget to keep adding that stuff to her protein powder. We can't have her losing any weight. A pig pushing 200 pounds is exactly what that kind of trash deserves."
The words struck Chloe like a physical blow. She whipped her head toward the kitchen counter, where a large canister of protein powder sat. A "thoughtful" gift from Brenda, meant to help her "get healthy."
She remembered now—Brenda had sent a new canister every two months, each time with a cheerful note: "Upgraded formula, sweetie! This one works even better!" And Chloe, desperate and depressed, had believed her. She had drunk it faithfully, watched the scale climb, and blamed herself for lacking willpower. Twice she had thrown away empty canisters and started fresh with new diets, only to have Brenda appear with yet another "improved" version, insisting it was the only way to see results. Chloe had trusted her stepmother's lies because she had no one else left to trust.
For a year, she had worked out until she nearly collapsed. She had starved herself. But the number on the scale only ever went up. It wasn't her fault. The air she breathed, the food she ate—it was all poisoned.
On the phone, Tiffany was still talking. "I know, I know, it's so annoying. But Mom, do you really think the Sinclairs will choose me?"
Brenda scoffed. "You're my daughter, not some charity case from his dead wife. As long as Chloe Hayes is out of the picture, your path is clear."
Chloe's hand trembled so violently she nearly dropped the phone. She ended the call with a stab of her thumb, her body shaking with a rage so cold it burned.
She stumbled to the kitchen and grabbed the canister of protein powder. Holding it like it was a venomous snake, she threw the entire thing into the trash can. The hollow thud of plastic against metal felt like the first note of a war drum.
She looked at her reflection in the darkened kitchen window—puffy, pale, lifeless. The last bit of weakness, the last tear, evaporated from her eyes. All that remained was fire.
They didn't just want to ruin her reputation. They wanted to break her, body and soul.
A laugh escaped her lips, silent and shaking. She laughed at her own naivety, her own stupidity for ever holding out a sliver of hope for them.
Revenge.
The word had never been so clear in her mind.
She would make them pay. She would make them suffer a hundred times over for everything they had done to her.
Chloe opened her laptop. She deleted every social media account, erasing every picture of the sad, overweight girl she had been forced to become.
She searched for the top fitness coaches and nutritionists in the city, her gaze sharp and unwavering.
She also sent a single encrypted message to an old contact from her college days—a freelance cybersecurity expert named Chris. "I need eyes on Brenda Hayes and Tiffany Price. Everything. Calls, messages, movements. Can you do it?" The reply came within minutes: "For you? Always. Give me 48 hours."
Then, she pulled out the bank card her mother had left her. It was her last resort, the seed money for her vengeance.
She picked up the cold quarter from her desk and placed it in the bottom of a small jewelry box. This wasn't an ending. It was the declaration of war.
Her phone buzzed one last time. Tiffany's name flashed on the screen.
Chloe stared at the name, her eyes like chips of ice. She blocked the number without a second thought.
As of today, the old Chloe Hayes was dead.
She walked to the window and pulled back the curtains. Bright sunlight flooded the room, and she didn't flinch. She stared directly into it, as if to absorb its fire into her very being.
One year. She would give herself one year.
She would transform. She would take back everything that was hers. And she would make Brenda and Tiffany kneel before her and repent for what they had done.
