Chapter 2

"Are we seriously eating your dry chicken again?" Mia Sterling complained, kicking off her leather loafers. They smacked against the baseboards.

Three o'clock on a Tuesday afternoon. I had just set the heavy ceramic platter of rosemary roasted chicken onto the mahogany dining table. Mia marched into the foyer, bringing a gust of warm air and the overwhelming stench of cloying floral perfume. She swung three glossy Prada shopping bags from her wrists, the thick paper crinkling sharply in the quiet house.

She ignored the table setting entirely. Marching straight to the kitchen island, she popped open a gold-embossed box she held in her other hand. She tilted it over the stainless steel trash can, dumping a half-eaten, intricately layered Michelin-star dessert into the garbage.

"I spent four hours cooking this," I said, wiping my hands on my apron.

"No one asked you to," Mia retorted. She wrinkled her nose, staring at the golden-brown skin of the chicken. "It's literally inedible. You always overcook the meat."

I stepped closer to the island. My eyes bypassed her sneering expression and locked onto the glossy black bags dangling from her manicured fingers. A thick cardstock tag hung from the nearest handle. The VIP signature line was clearly filled out in elegant, looping dark blue ink. The exact same handwriting from the yacht receipt upstairs.

I reached out and yanked the middle bag from her grip.

"Hey! What is your problem?" Mia yelled, stumbling forward a step.

I ignored her, reaching inside the bag. I bypassed the soft leather purse inside and fished out the folded receipt tucked beneath the crisp black tissue paper. I snapped the paper open. The total glared at me in bold print: four thousand, two hundred dollars. Paid in full.

The cardholder name printed at the bottom was Chloe Vance.

"Where did you get this?" I demanded, holding the slip of paper inches from her face. "Tell me right now."

Mia lunged forward, snatching the bag and the receipt right out of my hand. She shoved the crinkled paper into the front pocket of her jeans and crossed her arms defensively.

"Chloe bought them for me," Mia snapped. "Obviously."

"Chloe is your father's assistant," I said, keeping my voice dangerously low. "Assistants do not buy four-thousand-dollar bags for their boss's teenage daughters."

"She does," Mia said, pulling out her phone. She tapped the screen a few times, her screen brightness glaring in the afternoon light, and shoved the device toward my face. "Because she actually likes me. Since you never take me anywhere fun."

The screen displayed a crisp, high-resolution photo. Mia and Chloe sat side-by-side in plush pink velvet chairs, holding up their hands to show off matching French manicures. Chloe wore a designer silk blouse. The exact same brand Marcus had expensed last month under the category of client entertainment.

"She took me to the VIP lounge at the boutique, then we got our nails done," Mia boasted, flipping her long blonde hair over her shoulder. "She actually knows my style. Unlike you, who buys me clothes from the discount rack."

"I buy you clothes that fit your high school dress code," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "And I pay for them with the allowance your father and I agreed upon."

"Dad doesn't care about that stupid budget," Mia retorted, rolling her eyes. "Chloe says Dad wants me to look like a proper Sterling. She's just helping him out. You're just jealous because you walk around this house looking like a tired old maid."

Heavy footsteps thumped down the oak staircase before I could formulate a response. Leo Sterling trudged into the dining room, still clutching his unreleased gaming console against his chest like a shield. He stopped at the edge of the Persian rug, his eyes darting from the roasted chicken to my faded yellow apron.

"Are you wearing that tomorrow?" Leo asked, pointing a blunt finger at the stained fabric.

"Tomorrow?" I asked, turning my attention to my stepson.

"The parent-teacher conference," Leo said, his tone heavy with teenage disdain. "Don't go."

I turned to face him fully, squaring my shoulders. "I've gone to every single conference since you were in fourth grade, Leo. I know your teachers. I know your academic plan. You are failing AP History. Chloe doesn't know the first thing about your tutoring schedule."

"She doesn't need to," Leo said, gripping his console tighter. "She said she's going to hire a private consultant to fix my grades. A professional, not just some stay-at-home mom nagging me to read a textbook."

"A professional," I repeated, the word tasting like ash in my mouth.

"Yeah, and it's embarrassing when you show up," he shot back. "You ask too many questions. Chloe said she'd go instead. She actually dresses like she belongs at a prep school."

My hands clenched at my sides. My fingernails dug into my palms, leaving crescent-moon indentations in my skin. "Chloe is your father's employee. She has absolutely no legal right to sit in on your academic reviews."

"She has Dad's permission," Leo said, jutting his chin out in a perfect mirror of Marcus's stubbornness. "He texted the principal this morning and added her to the approved visitor list. So just stay home. You'll just ruin it anyway."

Mia snickered, picking up a silver fork from the meticulously set table. She poked at the chicken breast, scraping off the herbs. "Yeah, Clara. Just stay home and do the dishes. It's the only thing you're good at anyway."

I stared at the two teenagers standing in my dining room. I had raised them for the last seven years. I had packed their lunches, nursed their fevers, attended their games, and built a stable home for them while Marcus traveled the world building his company. Now, they were proudly wearing the bribes of my husband's mistress, weaponizing her against me, treating me like the hired help.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. The anger burning in my chest was far too cold for tears.

I stepped up to the table and grabbed Mia's porcelain plate. Then I grabbed Leo's.

"What are you doing?" Mia asked, dropping her fork onto the placemat.

I walked over to the kitchen sink. I scraped the roasted chicken, the garlic potatoes, and the glazed carrots straight down the drain.

"Hey!" Leo shouted, stepping forward. "I'm hungry!"

I ignored him. I walked back to the table, picked up the heavy main serving platter, and carried it back to the sink. With one swift, forceful motion, I tipped the entire dish into the basin. Hot gravy splashed against the stainless steel sides. Roasted vegetables tumbled down the dark hole of the drain.

"Are you crazy?" Mia shrieked. "We were going to eat that!"

"You just said it was inedible," I reminded her, my voice eerily calm.

"I meant I wanted you to order us something else!" Mia yelled, clutching her Prada bags tightly to her chest as if I might throw them in next. "Dad always orders us whatever we want when your food is gross!"

"Then call your father," I said.

I reached over and flicked the switch on the wall. The garbage disposal roared to life, grinding the four-hour meal into a pulpy paste. The violent, mechanical noise drowned out their protests, vibrating through the marble countertops.

"If Chloe is your mother now," I said over the deafening roar, keeping my voice perfectly level and my eyes locked on theirs, "she can feed you."

I untied the faded yellow apron from my waist. I let it drop onto the kitchen floor, right over the spot where Mia had tracked in dirt. I turned my back on them and walked out of the room.

I marched upstairs to the master bedroom, the sound of the grinding motor still echoing through the floorboards. I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed my divorce lawyer.

David answered on the second ring. "Clara. I got your message about the yacht."

"I need the asset freeze filed immediately," I said, pacing across the white rug. "Today. Right now."

"I'm looking at the accounts right now, Clara," David said, his voice unusually tight. "The two million for the yacht isn't the only thing missing."

I stopped pacing. "What do you mean?"

"Marcus emptied the primary joint trust three hours ago," David said.
