Chapter 3

"Look at the stitching on the tongue, Leo. Totally authentic."

Ten o'clock on Wednesday morning, the Sterling Tech lobby echoed with the sound of my husband's mistress buying my stepson's love. Chloe Vance lounged on the curved leather sofa near the entrance, holding her phone out in front of her face. She wore a limited-edition pearl-white Chanel suit, her legs crossed at the ankle.

"No way," Leo's voice crackled loudly through the phone speaker. "Dad said those were impossible to find. He tried to get his assistant to track them down for a month."

"Your dad just doesn't know the right sneaker brokers," Chloe laughed, tapping a manicured fingernail against her screen. "I do. I pulled a few strings with a distributor in Tokyo. I'll have them delivered to the house before your practice."

"You're the best, Chloe. Seriously."

"Only the best for my favorite guy," she cooed.

I stood ten feet away, gripping the heavy plastic hanger holding Marcus's freshly dry-cleaned charcoal Brioni suit. He needed it for an investor dinner tonight. He had texted me at dawn, demanding I drop everything and bring it to the office because he forgot it in his rush to leave.

He called it my one simple task for the day.

I looked at the crisp lapels of the suit. Then I looked at the tall blue recycling bin standing next to the reception desk.

I walked over to the plastic bin. I shoved the three-thousand-dollar suit, hanger and plastic wrap included, straight through the narrow flap. The expensive wool bunched and tore against the sharp edge before dropping into the dark container with a muffled thud.

"Excuse me," a bright voice chirped.

A young receptionist brushed past my shoulder. She carried a steaming ceramic mug on a silver tray.

"Bethany," I said, stepping into her path. "Is Marcus in his office?"

Bethany finally looked at me, her expression instantly tightening into a mask of professional inconvenience. "Mr. Sterling requested absolutely no interruptions today, Mrs. Hayes. He is preparing for the Miami summit."

She stepped around me, marching straight toward the visitor sofa.

"Your Ethiopian pour-over, Ms. Vance," Bethany said, bending slightly to offer the tray to Chloe. "Exactly 195 degrees, just like you asked."

"Thanks, Bethany," Chloe said, not looking up from her video call. "Tell Marcus I'll be up in five. I'm just finishing a family call."

A family call.

I turned my back on the sofa and walked directly to the executive elevator bank. I pressed the glowing up arrow. The stainless steel doors slid open immediately. I stepped inside and hit the button for the fiftieth floor.

"Hold the doors!" Chloe shouted.

She ended her call and jogged across the marble floor. She wedged her designer purse between the closing panels just in time. The sensors beeped, and the doors bounced back.

Chloe stepped into the confined space, bringing the heavy scent of vanilla perfume with her. The doors sealed us inside.

"Clara," Chloe said. A tight, practiced smile stretched across her glossy lips. "I didn't expect you at the office today. Marcus didn't mention you were coming."

"I'm sure he didn't," I replied, keeping my eyes fixed on the digital floor indicator.

"Did you bring his suit?" she asked, glancing at my empty hands. "He was very stressed about having it in time for the dinner."

"I dropped it off downstairs," I said. "It's exactly where it belongs."

She adjusted the collar of her Chanel jacket, shifting her weight to one foot. The movement exposed the pale skin just below her jawline. A dark, purplish-red bruise sat right over her pulse point.

"Marcus has a very busy schedule this morning," Chloe said, taking a slow sip of her fancy coffee. "He asked me to handle all personal interruptions."

"Is that what I am?" I asked.

"You know how the tech summit prep gets," she said, her tone heavy with false sympathy. "He needs complete focus. Wives dropping by unannounced usually ruin his workflow. It stresses him out."

I turned my head and stared directly at the mark on her neck. "Did he give you that bruise during his intense workflow?"

Chloe's hand flew to her throat. Her cheeks flushed a deep crimson before she recovered her arrogant posture. She dropped her hand and lifted her chin.

"We work very closely together," Chloe said, her voice dropping to a smug whisper. "You wouldn't understand the demands of his position. He needs someone who can keep up. Someone who understands the modern corporate landscape."

"You definitely keep busy," I said. "Buying teenagers shoes. Drinking coffee. Booking yachts."

Her eyes widened slightly at the mention of the yacht, a flicker of genuine panic crossing her features. But the elevator chimed before she could formulate a response.

We were passing the second floor.

I reached out and slapped the illuminated button for floor two. The elevator jerked to a halt.

"Going to bother HR?" Chloe sneered as the doors parted. "They report to Marcus, you know. They won't listen to a disgruntled housewife."

"Just taking a detour," I said.

I stepped out of the elevator and let the metal doors slide shut, cutting off her smug expression.

The second floor housed the legal department. The long, carpeted hallway remained completely empty. At ten-thirty on a Wednesday, the entire legal team sat trapped in their weekly compliance review in the main conference room.

I walked past the vacant reception desk and headed straight for the senior archivist's office at the end of the hall.

The door was unlocked. I slipped inside and shut it quietly behind me.

Row after row of locked gray filing cabinets lined the back wall. Marcus thought he controlled everything in this company. He thought emptying the joint trust would leave me helpless. But he forgot who built the foundation of Sterling Tech.

I pulled my master key ring from my purse. I found the small brass key I hadn't used in seven years and slid it into the lock of the farthest cabinet.

The mechanism clicked. I yanked the heavy metal drawer open.

My fingers walked across the tops of the thick manila folders. 2012. 2011. 2010.

I stopped at a folder labeled Hayes-Sterling Formation.

I pulled it out and flipped it open on top of the cabinet. Inside sat the original corporate charter and the early equity proxy agreement. The contract Marcus and I signed before we got married, proving I fronted the initial capital for his startup under a proxy hold.

Fifty-one percent of the voting shares technically belonged to Clara Hayes.

I traced my signature at the bottom of the page. Marcus had spent years diluting the public shares, building a board of directors loyal only to him. He paraded around as the sole visionary of Sterling Tech. But this original proxy superseded all of his recent restructuring. He never dissolved this agreement because doing so would have triggered a massive capital gains tax event. He left it buried here, assuming I was too busy managing his children to remember it existed.

This single piece of paper was worth ten times the money he stole from our trust. It was the kill switch for his entire empire.

I folded the thick document in half and slid it into the hidden zippered compartment of my leather tote bag.

The brass doorknob rattled.

The heavy oak door swung inward, hitting the wall with a sharp crack.

Chloe stood in the doorway, her eyes dropping from my face straight to the Hayes-Sterling Formation folder resting open on the cabinet.
