Chapter 4

Chapter 4: Shadow of the Throne

The morning sun blasted the marble columns in the royal gardens, bright and golden, but Aria didn’t feel any of its warmth. She kept close behind Ronen, half a step back, clutching Liam’s small, warm hand. Her little boy was completely absorbed in the place—his wooden wolf tucked under his arm, eyes wide as he took in the towering arches and rose bushes and fountains everywhere.

“Look, Mama! Water jump!” Liam pointed, giggling at a marble nymph tossing water into the air.

“I see it, sweet boy,” Aria replied, but her voice sounded distant, the words sliding out flat. She barely glanced at the fountain. Her eyes kept moving, searching, never stopping for long on anything soft or beautiful.

Ronen looked different today—no armour, just a charcoal tunic and a simple dagger at his hip. He seemed almost like an ordinary father for once, his golden eyes gentler, less like a tyrant’s. There was even this rare little smile as he watched Liam leap and teeter over the cracks in the flagstones.

“He’s got your curiosity,” Ronen said, coming closer until their arms nearly touched. “Always trying to figure things out.”

“He learned that because it keeps him alive,” Aria shot back, her voice still cool, guarded.

That wiped the smile from Ronen’s face. Guilt flickered across his eyes, but he stayed quiet. He crouched down, holding out a hand for Liam. “Come here, little cub. I want to show you something.”

Liam ran to him without thinking twice, completely oblivious that his father was supposed to be terrifying. Ronen swung the boy up to his shoulder, making him shriek with joy as he clung to his dad’s hair and looked down, king of the world for a heartbeat.

They looked like any family just out for a bit of sun in the gardens. But Aria’s gaze slipped beyond the hedges.

Six palace servants lined the walls, silver trays balanced in their hands, fruit and iced water gleaming in the light. The instant Aria’s silver eyes touched them, they all dropped their eyes. One young maid shook so hard that the crystal pitcher rattled against her tray.

A little farther ahead, two high-ranked Alpha women—nobles, dripping with cashmere and rubies—stood near the roses, talking. As Ronen and Aria got close, the women cut off their words and dipped into deep curtsies, bowing their heads until their foreheads nearly touched the dirt. They held their breath until the King had passed.

It set a cold weight on Aria’s chest.

Just two years ago, she’d walked this same path as the Citadel’s head herbalist and beloved mate-elect. People used to smile, stop her with warm greetings, ask her to mix up a tea or mend a twisted ankle. She had belonged here. She’d been loved, trusted, part of their lives.

Now, everyone looked at her with a kind of horror.

Ronen’s speech in the square yesterday did exactly what he’d wanted—it kept danger away from her and Liam—but it carved a canyon between Aria and the rest of the world. Nobody saw Aria Vance the herbalist anymore. Just the woman who brought down Commander Vane with a whisper, the mother of the secret heir, the icy shadow trailing behind a ruthless King.

“Aria?” Ronen’s voice cut through her tangled thoughts.

She looked up, startled. He’d stopped at a stone bench, Liam still perched on his hip, and watched her, gold eyes sharp and concerned.

“You’re shaking,” Ronen said quietly, stepping in close. “What’s wrong?”

“They’re terrified of me,” she nearly hissed, just loud enough for him to hear over the fountains. She flinched slightly toward the cowering servants. “Just look at them, Ronen. Two years ago, I sat with those maids, showing them how to dry lavender. Now they look at me like I might slit their throats.”

Ronen’s jaw tightened. “They’re showing proper respect. I made it clear—no one treats you with anything less under my roof.”

“That’s not respect!” Aria’s voice spiked, silver eyes flashing, but she kept quiet for Liam’s sake. “That’s fear. You didn’t protect me, Ronen. You just made me an outcast all over again. In the borderlands, they hated me for being a traitor. Here, they’re terrified because they think I’m the tyrant’s favourite. I can’t even walk through this stupid garden without making good people tremble.”

Ronen froze, as if her words hit him like a physical blow. He’d spent the last two days tearing apart her enemies—like he always did, with force and intimidation—thinking absolute safety would bring her peace. He never once stopped to notice the cost. He built her a fortress, but now it felt more like a cage.

“I don’t want bows,” Aria whispered. Her voice broke as she slid Liam from Ronen’s shoulders and pulled him tight against her waist. “Not if it’s out of fear. I don’t even know myself anymore.”

Liam, sensing her upset, reached up and gently touched her cheek. “Mama, okay?”

“Mama’s fine, sweet boy,” she promised, kissing his hair.

She walked away, turning her back on the bowing nobles, the silent servants, and, finally, the King himself—leaving Ronen alone by the marble fountain, surrounded by the walls he’d built for her, and the silence pressing in on all sides.
