Chapter 5

Chapter 5: Shadows at the Gate

The bronze gates of the Obsidian Citadel groaned, worn iron hinges shrieking into the bitter mountain wind. The sound rattled through the empty courtyard. Night pressed heavy on the valley, but nobody inside even tried to sleep.

Rumors had already seeped up from the city—border lords shut the Frost-Pass, killing the Citadel’s main supply line. Worse, news of King Ronen’s latest spectacle had twisted through the halls: he’d banished Commander Vane in front of everyone, barely stopping short of executing anyone who so much as whispered about Aria or the hidden heir. That fear sparked like static in every room, and you could feel it grip the walls.

On the high parapet by the main gate, General Kaelen stood braced against the cold, a thick cloak wrapped over him. He scanned the dark line of forest below, eyes sharp. Beside him, Aria hugged her own cloak tighter, every breath turning to mist in the freezing air.

"You shouldn’t be up here, Lady Aria," Kaelen said quietly, glancing at her. "This wind cuts straight through you. The King was clear about keeping you inside."

Aria hardly moved. Her eyes—storm gray, restless—traced the torches flickering along the wall. "He built a fortress out of fear today, Kaelen. He thinks threats and executions keep my son safe, but all he’s doing is driving our enemies underground. They won’t stay quiet for long."

Kaelen opened his mouth to reply, but the stone beneath their boots started to pulse—thump, thump—a steady, heavy vibration. Down in the valley, movement broke the fog: a line of armored riders, shapes cut from the mist, silent and hard. Their horses wore white frost-iron mesh, unmistakable gear of the Northern Lycan Coalition. No banners. No warning.

A scout leaned out from the tower. "Riders at the perimeter! Twelve mounted Alphas at the outer gate!"

A horn split the night, one long note—nobody’s friend or foe, just a warning. Instantly, the courtyard below filled with black-armored enforcers, broadswords scraped free.

The iron postern under the arch swung open. King Ronen stepped into the torchlight, helmetless, hair flaring wild in the wind, gold eyes glaring like fire in the hollow dark. He stopped, not ten steps from the gate. The Northern riders brought their mounts to a clean, sharp halt, just on the other side.

The lead rider peeled back his hood. Scarred face, glacier-green eyes—Ambassador Torin.

"You come to my gates at midnight, Torin," Ronen growled, loud enough for the wind to carry, his voice all edge. "Give me one reason I shouldn’t let my archers nail you to the timbers where you stand."

Torin never moved. He almost grinned, eyes colder than the night. Then he raised a sealed iron canister.

"I’m not here to fight, King Ronen," Torin called, pitching his voice up to the battlements. Aria stiffened. "I bring an ultimatum from High King Sigurd of the North."

He tossed the canister through the bars; it hit cobblestone, spun, and stopped at Ronen’s boots.

"Your border lords have closed the supply roads, thanks to your chaos," Torin said, voice expanding over the courtyard. "The North knows your secret. That boy in there—he carries Ashwood blood. The imperial bloodline. He doesn’t belong in the hands of a cornered Alpha who kills his own men for talking."

Above, Aria’s fingers locked around the cold stone. Her heart slammed so loud, she thought Kaelen might hear it. They know.

"High King Sigurd demands you send him north for fostering by the winter solstice," Torin continued. He sounded downright smug. "Turn him over, or forty thousand blades waiting behind the Frost-Pass will march. And they won’t just come for the boy, Ronen—they’ll gut your Citadel and put the border lords in your place. Your people are already starving."

Ronen never looked at the canister. He stared right through Torin, a slow, wolfish smile curling his lip—the sort you see right before something tears out your throat.

"Tell Sigurd," Ronen spoke, quiet but crackling with threat, "to bring every blade he’s got. Because if he comes for my son, I’ll ride out and burn his kingdom to the last stone."

He didn’t wait. He waved his captain forward. "Seal the portcullis. Nothing comes within three miles before dawn—if they try, kill them."

King Ronen turned his back on the diplomats, heading for the keep. Right before he vanished into shadow, he looked up—golden eyes locking onto Aria. She stood half-hidden above him, and he didn’t smile. He didn’t have to. He’d silenced everyone with fear tonight, but down here at the gates, surrounded by shadows, both of them knew: the real fight, the one for Liam, had just begun. And every power on the continent would burn for the right to claim him.
