Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Iron Mandate

The big bronze bells up in the Grand Belfry rang three times. Everyone knew what that meant—royal execution, or war. Nothing else got that sound.

By midday, heat shimmered over the massive courtyard beneath Sunfire Tower. There wasn’t an inch of space left: nobles in lush, embroidered tunics crowded right next to kitchen maids in battered grey. Enforcers stood stiff, while even the High Council looked spooked. The whole place buzzed with anxious energy. No one had to ask why they were summoned today. Word had spread fast about the exiled herbalist's return, and that golden-eyed child. Those whispers turned poisonous as soon as they started.

Aria watched from the high balcony, half-hidden behind the stone rail. She pulled Liam close, keeping him shielded under her linen cloak. Her silver eyes scanned the crowd for any flash of danger.

“Mama, loud bells,” Liam mumbled, already rubbing sleep from his eyes on her shoulder.

“I know, sweetheart,” she whispered, heart pounding so hard she wondered if he felt it. “Stay quiet. Stay with me.”

Right then, a wave of Alpha power slammed down over the square—the kind that choked the air and killed every scrap of conversation. Suddenly the only sound was the sharp snap of obsidian banners in the wind.

King Ronen Blackwood strode out, all in black armour that drank in the noonday sun. The broadsword on his hip caught a nasty gleam. His face looked like it was carved out of iron—no kindness, no patience—a real Lycan king. General Kaelen stood a step behind him, flanked by six elite guards gripping heavy iron chains.

Ronen ignored the usual ceremony. He didn’t wait for bows or greetings. He just walked to the edge of the dais, golden eyes rolling over the crowd, measuring each person like a wolf testing for weakness.

“For two days,” Ronen began, his voice raw and heavy, bouncing off the stone walls, “I’ve listened to this Citadel whisper.”

Down in the crowd, people stiffened.

“I’ve heard every rumour,” he went on, his voice getting darker, rough around the edges. “Every slur against Lady Aria Vance and the Prince of the Obsidian Realm. Let’s make something clear.”

He took a step forward, hand resting on his sword’s hilt.

“Lady Aria Vance was cleared of all high treason charges two years ago. The real traitors are already dead. She’s here, not as a criminal, but as the sole authority over the royal heir. No one will talk about her past. No one—stable hand or councillor—will spread old lies about her or my son. Anyone who tries will be hauled up for treason. Immediately.”

A ripple of shock went through the crowd. Ronen barely seemed to notice.

“And if you don’t believe me—Commander Vane!”

From the front, a young officer in silver-trimmed armour flinched. General Kaelen wasted no time—he shoved the kid up onto the steps. Commander Vane—Lord Vane’s nephew—fell to his knees in front of the King.

“Sire!” he choked out, desperate. “I’ve only served you! I would never—”

“This morning at dawn," Ronen cut him off, his voice ice-cold, "you called the Prince a borderland bastard in the eastern armoury."

The crowd drew breath as Lord Vane, hands shaking, tried to step forward. Kaelen glared him back into line.

“Your Grace, he’s young! He spoke out of turn!” Lord Vane blurted, but Ronen didn’t budge. His gaze never left the shamed officer.

“I promised order," Ronen said quietly, but the words carried everywhere. "Order means consequences. Commander Vane is stripped of his rank, his family’s lands are forfeit, and he’s banished to the outer mines in the northern wastes. If he’s still here by sunset, Kaelen will hang him from the outer gate.”

Guards clamped heavy shackles on Vane’s wrists and dragged him, screaming, off the steps.

A heavy silence smothered the courtyard. No one dared lift their eyes to the King—not the councillors, not the servants clutching each other in fear. In just a few minutes, Ronen had shown everyone that threats against Aria and Liam would mean annihilation.

He stood there and let his gaze sweep over the frozen crowd.

“Get back to your duties,” he said quietly. “Remember what happens when you try my patience.”

Up on the balcony, Aria watched the courtyard empty. People scattered, desperate to get away. Down below, Ronen turned and looked up. His gold eyes met hers through the shadows.

He’d protected her, crushed every rumour with brutal force. But as Aria watched the terrified faces, her blood ran cold. Ronen’s power had built her a fortress of fear. In a realm ruled by terror, the knives always hid deeper in the dark.
