The Alpha King's Billion Dollar Mate

For twenty-two years, I believed I was wolfless, a worthless defect in a world where your wolf defines your worth. Then Thomas Veyre, the most feared Alpha King, walked into my territory and his wolf recognized me as his fated mate. Instead of claiming me, he offered a contract: one billion dollars to live in his palace, endure the agonizing mate bond, and publicly deny our connection. He thinks he can buy my silence. But the cold, disciplined king is falling first, growing violently protective as I uncover a terrifying truth: someone sealed my wolf as a child and erased my family history. I am the last heir to an ancient bloodline. When the kingdom learns the truth, Thomas must choose between his crown and the woman he loves.

Chapter 3

The heavy metal doors of the kitchen swung shut, sealing out the freezing winter wind.

Amara leaned her spine against the warm brick wall. Her chest heaved with violent, jagged breaths. The sudden rush of hot air from the industrial ovens felt like a physical blow to her frozen skin. She slid down the rough brick until her boots braced against the floor tiles, desperate to find her balance in a world that had just tilted on its axis.

Her hands shook uncontrollably. She stared down at her raw, blistered palms, willing the violent tremor to stop. The metallic scent of blood and terror still lingered in her nose. Yet, beneath the stench of the terrified pack, the phantom smell of dark amber and crackling ozone clung to her clothes.

She convinced herself it was just fear.

The Alpha King was a monster. His aura was a weapon designed to crush lesser wolves into submission. Her violent physical reaction in the courtyard was a primal survival instinct misfiring under immense pressure. The magnetic, terrifying pull she felt when their eyes locked was merely her body recognizing a lethal predator. It was a biological warning to run.

She forced herself to stand up. Surviving in Silverpine meant never showing weakness for too long. If the head cook caught her hiding by the door, she would be thrown back out into the snow to chop more wood.

The kitchen was a chaotic war zone. Fifty pack members rushed between the massive steel counters, shouting orders over the roar of the gas stoves. The stakes had never been higher. A single burnt meal or a misplaced fork could give the Alpha King a reason to execute the culinary staff. The air was thick with the rich scent of roasting venison, crushed rosemary, and bubbling spun sugar.

Amara slipped through the frantic crowd, keeping her head down. She moved toward the massive stone sink in the corner, turning on the hot water to scrub the frozen dirt from her hands.

Elias appeared beside her a moment later. He carried a stack of polished silver plates, his face pale and tight with anxiety. He set the plates down on the counter and grabbed a clean linen towel, handing it to Amara.

She took it without a word, drying her raw skin.

Elias leaned in close, his voice barely audible over the clattering pots. "Are you insane?"

Amara kept her eyes on the running water. "I did not do anything."

"You stared down the Alpha King," Elias hissed, glancing over his shoulder to make sure no one was listening. "You refused to drop to the ice. Marcus looked like he wanted to rip your throat out right there in the snow. If the King had not walked away, you would be dead."

"He was trying to force me down with his aura," Amara replied, her voice steady despite the lingering tremble in her fingers. "I do not bow to men who use their power to crush people who cannot fight back."

Elias rubbed his temples, his dark eyes filled with genuine concern. "This is not a game of pride, Amara. This is survival. The royal guards are currently tearing apart the lower archives. They kicked the pack elders out of the record room. They are pulling decades of birth registries and packing them into metal lockboxes. No one knows what they are looking for, but Marcus is losing his mind."

Amara frowned, turning off the faucet. The King had spared her life for a public insult, only to immediately order his soldiers into the deepest secrets of her pack. The timing felt dangerous. It felt calculated.

"I will stay in the kitchen," Amara promised, folding the linen towel carefully. "I will wash the dishes. I will scrub the floors. I will not give Marcus another reason to look at me today."

Elias nodded, grabbing the stack of silver plates. "Stay out of sight. The royal dinner service begins in two hours. The dining hall is going to be a slaughterhouse of tension. Just keep your head down."

He hurried away to join the frantic plating crew on the other side of the room.

Amara spent the next ninety minutes standing in the scorching heat of the dishwashing station. She scrubbed heavy iron pots and polished crystal wine glasses until her muscles ached. The mind numbing labor was a welcome distraction. It kept her thoughts away from the piercing, dark eyes of Thomas Veyre. It kept her from remembering the terrifying, possessive rumble that had vibrated from his chest.

The kitchen doors slammed open.

The loud crash silenced the chaotic room instantly. The cooks froze in their tracks, dropping their utensils. The roaring fires in the hearths suddenly seemed very small.

Alpha Marcus Rook marched into the room.

He was a portrait of unhinged panic. His expensive charcoal suit was wrinkled. His silk tie was pulled loose. His forehead glistened with cold sweat. The royal guards had spent the last two hours dismantling his authority, tearing through his territory, and treating him like a nuisance in his own home. He had been stripped of his power, and now he was looking for someone to punish.

His furious, bloodshot eyes swept over the terrified kitchen staff.

The scent of his rage filled the room, sour and suffocating. Every wolf in the kitchen lowered their head, desperate to avoid his wrath.

Marcus's gaze locked onto the dishwashing station in the back corner. He saw the faded canvas jacket. He saw the wolfless girl who had publicly embarrassed him in front of the King.

A cruel, vindictive sneer twisted his lips.

He stalked across the kitchen floor, shoving a terrified sous chef out of his path. His heavy boots pounded against the tiles.

Amara set down the crystal glass in her hands. She did not run. She stood her ground, wiping the soapy water from her fingers.

Marcus stopped right in front of her, invading her personal space. He reached out and grabbed a crisp, white serving apron from a nearby hook. He threw the fabric hard into Amara's chest.

"Put it on," Marcus ordered, his voice dripping with venom.

Amara caught the apron, her dark eyes locking onto his frantic face. "I am assigned to the washing station, Alpha."

"Not anymore," Marcus spat, leaning closer. The smell of his fear was nauseating. "You think you are special because you stood up in the snow. You think you can disrespect the hierarchy of this pack. You brought the King's attention to us with your pathetic display."

Amara kept her expression blank. She did not point out that the King had already ordered his guards to raid the archives before she even looked at him. Marcus did not care about the truth. He only cared about regaining his shattered ego.

"I was told to stay out of the dining hall," Amara stated evenly.

Marcus reached out and grabbed a heavy silver serving tray from the counter. He shoved it roughly into her hands. The polished metal was ice cold against her warm skin.

"You are going to serve the royal table," Marcus hissed, his eyes wide with malicious intent. "You are going to carry the wine. You are going to approach the Alpha King. And when you pour his drink, you are going to drop to your knees and serve him from the floor. You will show him exactly what you are. A defective, broken Omega."

The kitchen staff remained dead silent. Elias stood a few feet away, his fists clenched tight at his sides, but stepping in to defend her would mean a death sentence for treason.

Amara stared at the heavy silver tray in her hands.

Marcus wanted to publicly humiliate her. He wanted to parade her in front of the royal court as a broken toy to prove that Silverpine still knew how to discipline its strays.

"No."

The single syllable fell from her lips quietly, but it echoed like a gunshot in the silent kitchen.

Marcus blinked, genuinely stunned by her refusal. A dark, furious purple flush crept up his neck. "What did you just say to me?"

"I will not serve the royal table on my knees," Amara replied, lifting her chin to meet his furious glare. "I am a worker in this pack. I am not a slave."

Marcus raised his hand, his fingers curling into a fist. The urge to strike her was written plainly across his twisted features. "If you do not put that apron on and walk through those doors, I will strip you of your pack affiliation right now. I will throw you into the winter woods without a coat. You will freeze to death before midnight."

Amara tightened her grip on the silver tray. The threat of exile in the dead of winter was a guaranteed death sentence. She weighed her options, her survival instincts battling against her fierce pride.

Before Marcus could issue another threat, the temperature in the kitchen plummeted.

The roaring flames in the massive stone hearths flickered and dimmed, as if starved of oxygen. The rich smell of roasted meat and spices vanished.

The scent of crackling ozone and dark amber flooded the room.

The heavy kitchen doors did not slam. They glided open in terrifying, absolute silence.

The Alpha King stepped into the room.

Thomas Veyre had removed his heavy winter overcoat. He wore a masterfully tailored dark suit that clung perfectly to the broad, lethal lines of his shoulders. The pristine white fabric of his dress shirt contrasted sharply with the dark, dangerous energy rolling off his skin. A heavy silver watch glinted on his left wrist.

He moved with the silent, fluid grace of an apex predator.

The kitchen staff collectively stopped breathing. Every single wolf dropped to their knees on the hard tile floor, submitting instantly to the crushing, suffocating weight of the royal aura.

Marcus froze. His raised fist dropped slowly to his side. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a terrified corpse. He turned slowly toward the entrance, his shoulders hunching in pure terror.

Thomas did not look at the kneeling cooks.

His dark, piercing eyes locked instantly onto the back corner of the room. He saw Amara. He saw the silver tray in her hands. He saw the furious red flush on Marcus's face and the white serving apron crumpled on the floor.

The King's jaw tightened.

He took a slow, deliberate step forward.

The silence in the kitchen was agonizing. The only sound was the crisp, rhythmic click of the King's polished shoes against the floor tiles. He walked past the massive steel counters, ignoring the bowing staff, his gaze fixed solely on the Alpha of Silverpine.

Thomas stopped three feet away from Marcus.

The sheer physical difference between the two men was staggering. Marcus was tall and broad, built for northern survival. Yet standing in front of Thomas Veyre, Marcus looked small. He looked fragile.

Thomas did not raise his voice. He did not yell. He did not need to shout to command the room.

He spoke in a smooth, quiet baritone that cut through the silence like a scalpel.

"Is the Silverpine treasury so depleted that the Alpha must force a yard laborer to serve the royal table?"

The words were spoken with chilling indifference, but the underlying threat was lethal.

Marcus trembled. Sweat dripped down his pale face. He bowed his head, unable to meet the King's terrifying gaze. "Your Majesty. I apologize for the disruption. This girl is defective. She lacks a wolf. She is disobedient and requires strict discipline. I was merely instructing her on her duties."

"You were threatening to throw her into the winter woods," Thomas stated. It was not a question. It was a cold, hard fact pulled straight from the echoes of the room.

Marcus swallowed hard. His vocal cords seemed to paralyze. "She refused a direct order, Your Majesty. She refused to serve your wine on her knees."

Thomas tilted his head a fraction of an inch.

The air pressure in the room doubled. A low, terrifying rumble vibrated from deep inside the King's chest. It was the sound of Raze, furious and possessive, clawing against the iron cage of Thomas's restraint.

"A King does not drink from the hands of a slave, Marcus," Thomas said quietly. The words were laced with heavy, dark venom. "And a true Alpha does not force the weak to bear his humiliation."

Marcus flinched as if he had been struck across the face. The insult was devastating. It stripped away his pride, his authority, and his worth in a single, quiet sentence. He opened his mouth to apologize, to grovel, to explain himself.

"Step away from her," Thomas ordered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register.

Marcus stumbled backward, nearly tripping over his own feet in his haste to put distance between himself and Amara. He kept his head bowed, his hands shaking at his sides.

Thomas turned his attention away from the pathetic Alpha.

He looked at Amara.

She was still holding the heavy silver tray, her knuckles white from the tight grip. She had not dropped to her knees. She stood tall amidst a room full of bowing wolves. Her dark eyes were wide, taking in the terrifying, protective fury simmering beneath the King's composed exterior.

Thomas stepped into her personal space.

The heat radiating from his body wrapped around her, chasing away the winter chill still clinging to her clothes. The scent of ozone and crushed pine was intoxicating up close. It clouded her senses, making her heart pound a frantic, heavy rhythm against her ribs.

He reached out.

His large, elegant hand wrapped around the edge of the silver tray. His long fingers brushed against her knuckles.

A sharp, violent spark of electricity shot up Amara's arm.

She gasped quietly, her breath hitching in her throat. The physical contact sent a jolt of pure fire straight into her chest. It was a terrifying, addictive heat.

Thomas felt it too.

His hand froze on the metal tray. The muscles in his jaw locked. A dark, obsessive hunger flashed in his eyes, burning away the cold calculation. For one agonizing second, he looked at her lips. He looked at the frantic pulse beating at the base of her throat.

He wanted to pull her against his chest. He wanted to claim her right here in the dirty kitchen of a pathetic northern pack.

He forced himself to pull back.

The immense discipline required to step away from his mate was written in the rigid tension of his shoulders. He gently pulled the silver tray from her trembling hands.

Thomas turned and held the tray out without looking.

The terrified Silverpine Beta scrambled forward on his knees, taking the tray with shaking hands.

"You will serve the wine," Thomas instructed the Beta quietly. "If you spill a single drop, I will hold your Alpha personally responsible."

The Beta nodded frantically, scrambling backward toward the wine cellar.

Thomas adjusted the cuff of his pristine white shirt, smoothing away a microscopic wrinkle. His face returned to a mask of terrifying, aristocratic blankness. The moment of dangerous intimacy was locked away, hidden behind walls of pure steel.

He turned his back on Marcus. He turned his back on the kitchen staff.

The Alpha King began to walk toward the heavy metal doors.

Royal Commander Darius Kane stepped into the kitchen entrance, his dark tactical gear blending into the shadows of the hallway. He stood at attention, waiting for his King's directive.

Thomas paused in the doorway. He did not look back at the room. He did not look back at Amara.

"Darius," Thomas murmured.

"Yes, Your Majesty," the commander replied instantly.

Thomas looked at the far wall, his dark eyes fixed on a point only he could see. The subtle flex of his jaw was the only sign of the violent storm raging inside him.

"Bring the wolfless girl to my temporary office."

Darius did not question the order. He merely nodded. "When, Your Majesty?"

Thomas turned his head just enough to catch a final, brief glimpse of Amara standing defiant and beautiful in the center of the chaotic kitchen.

"Midnight."
