The Alpha King's Billion Dollar Mate Chapter 1

The morning frost bit into Amara Vale's knuckles. She gripped the rough bark of the heavy oak logs, her breath plumping into thick white clouds that dissolved into the freezing air. Silverpine territory was always brutal in the dead of winter. The damp chill seeped through her thin canvas jacket, settling deep into her bones.

She hoisted the third log into her arms. The rough wood scraped against her skin, pulling at the half-healed blisters on her palms. She did not flinch. Pain was just another morning routine.

Around her, the pack grounds buzzed with frantic energy. The usual quiet of the dawn had been replaced by shouted orders, the thud of heavy boots, and the sharp scent of panic. Silverpine was preparing for a royal inspection.

Amara kept her head down and focused on the path to the main lodge. Her boots crunched against the icy gravel. A group of younger wolves sprinted past her, their natural supernatural heat keeping them warm despite the freezing temperature. One of them intentionally shoved his shoulder into hers.

The impact sent a shockwave of pain through her collarbone. Amara stumbled on the ice. The heavy logs slipped from her grasp and crashed to the frozen ground, scattering across the pathway.

Laughter echoed in the crisp air. The younger wolves did not even break their stride.

Amara did not glare after them. She did not waste energy on anger. She simply knelt on the frozen earth, her stiff fingers reaching for the scattered wood. In a world where a wolf dictated a person's worth, a twenty-two-year-old woman without one was considered a burden. A defective stray. She had learned long ago that reacting only invited worse cruelty.

Survival meant remaining invisible.

"Move those logs out of the main pathway, you useless girl."

The harsh voice cracked through the cold air like a whip.

Amara froze, her hands hovering over a piece of oak. She recognized the heavy, oppressive scent of expensive cologne masking the natural smell of pine. Alpha Marcus Rook.

She slowly stood up, keeping her eyes fixed on the silver buckles of his polished boots.

Alpha Marcus stepped closer. The gravel crunched beneath his heavy tread. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that looked out of place in the rugged mountain territory. His jaw was clenched, his posture rigid with nervous energy. The impending arrival of the royal entourage had him on edge, and an Alpha on edge always looked for something to crush.

"Are you deaf?" Marcus snapped. He kicked one of the fallen logs. It spun across the ice and struck Amara's ankle.

She bit the inside of her cheek to keep her expression blank. "No, Alpha. I am moving them."

"You are doing it too slowly." Marcus leaned in, his voice dropping to a dangerous sneer. "The King's helicopters will breach the territory lines in less than thirty minutes. The Alpha King is coming to Silverpine to inspect our ranks, our finances, and our strength. I will not have him looking at a wolfless mistake ruining the aesthetic of my pack."

Amara kept her gaze lowered. She knew better than to argue. Marcus thrived on submission.

"Take this firewood to the kitchens," Marcus ordered, his tone dripping with disgust. "And then you will stay there. You are not to show your face in the main hall. You are not to walk the grounds. If the royal guard catches sight of a defective Omega wandering around, I will hold you personally responsible for the insult."

"Understood, Alpha." Amara's voice was steady. It revealed none of the cold calculation running through her mind. Staying in the kitchens meant staying near the warmth of the industrial ovens. It meant avoiding the brutal outdoor shifts during the inspection. Marcus thought he was punishing her, but he was giving her exactly what she needed to survive the day.

Marcus scoffed, turning on his heel. "Clean up this mess and disappear."

He marched toward the main lodge, barking new orders at the frantic pack members decorating the entrance.

Amara exhaled a slow, measured breath. She knelt again, her numb fingers gripping the rough bark. She stacked the wood into her arms, ignoring the sharp sting of splinters piercing her raw skin. She balanced the heavy load against her chest and resumed her trek toward the servant entrance at the back of the lodge.

The kitchens were a chaotic blur of heat and noise. Silverpine cooks rushed between massive steel counters, shouting over the roar of the gas stoves. The air was thick with the rich scent of roasting meats, spiced wine, and freshly baked bread.

Amara slipped through the heavy metal door unnoticed. She carried the logs to the massive stone hearth in the corner, carefully arranging them in the storage bin. She dusted the debris from her jacket, savoring the immediate warmth radiating from the open flames.

"I saw Marcus corner you by the treeline."

The voice was low, spoken right next to her ear. Amara turned to find Elias Vale standing in the shadow of the pantry door.

Elias was tall, with broad shoulders and a relaxed posture that hid his formidable strength. He held two steaming mugs of black tea. He offered one to her.

Amara took the mug, letting the hot ceramic thaw her freezing fingers. "It was nothing, Elias. Just his usual morning threats."

Elias frowned, his dark eyes scanning her pale face. He noted the fresh scrape on her chin and the dirt on her knees. "He knocked you down."

"I slipped on the ice." Amara took a sip of the bitter tea. The liquid burned a pleasant trail down her throat. "The royals are making him nervous. He wants everything perfect."

Elias leaned against the brick wall, crossing his arms over his chest. He was one of the very few people in Silverpine who treated her like a living, breathing person. They had grown up together, sharing scraps of food and hiding in the woods when the older wolves got too rough. He knew her better than anyone.

"Marcus is right to be nervous," Elias murmured, keeping his voice low so the frantic cooks would not hear. "This is not just a standard territory check. The Alpha King is ruthless. Word from the eastern borders says he dissolved an entire council last month just because they withheld tax records. The man does not negotiate."

Amara stared into her tea. She had heard the rumors about Thomas Veyre. The supernatural world spoke of the Alpha King in hushed, terrified whispers. They called him a monster dressed in wealth. A ruler who controlled millions of wolves with terrifying, cold precision.

"He is a billionaire with a crown," Amara said softly. "Men like that do not care about the packs they inspect. They care about the ledgers. Marcus just needs to make sure the math adds up."

Elias shook his head, his expression grim. "It is not just the ledgers, Amara. The royal guard is traveling with him. The King's personal enforcers. They are looking for something. Or someone."

A cold knot formed in Amara's stomach, distinct from the winter chill. She tightened her grip on the warm mug. "What do you mean?"

"I overheard Marcus talking to his Beta last night," Elias explained, his gaze darting toward the busy kitchen floor to ensure no one was listening. "The royal court sent a mandate two days ago. They demanded full access to the Silverpine birth registries. Every record from the last twenty-five years."

Amara frowned. Pack registries were fiercely guarded secrets. They contained bloodlines, mating pairs, and territorial claims. An Alpha demanding them was a massive breach of pack privacy. "Why would the King care about Silverpine's old records?"

"I don't know," Elias admitted. "But whatever he is hunting for, it has Marcus terrified. You need to stay out of sight today, Amara. Do not just stay in the kitchens. Hide in the lower cellars until the helicopters leave. If the royal guard is turning this place upside down, you do not want to be caught in their path."

Amara nodded slowly. She had spent her whole life perfecting the art of going unnoticed. Fading into the background was her greatest skill. "I will stay in the root cellar. It is dark, and no one goes down there during banquets."

Elias reached out, his warm hand briefly squeezing her shoulder. The gesture was purely platonic, a grounding tether of friendship in a pack that offered her nothing but scorn. "Keep your head down. I will bring you some food after the King's dinner service begins."

A sudden, deafening roar shattered the morning air.

The sound vibrated through the stone walls of the kitchen. The pots hanging from the ceiling racks rattled violently against each other. The cooks stopped moving, their faces draining of color as they looked toward the high windows.

It was the heavy, rhythmic thumping of military-grade helicopter blades.

The royals had arrived.

The sheer force of the wind generated by the descending aircraft shook the sturdy timber frame of the lodge. Amara set her mug on the counter, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Go," Elias urged, his voice barely audible over the mechanical roar. "Get to the cellar."

Amara turned toward the narrow wooden staircase at the back of the kitchen. The cellar was safe. It was quiet. It was away from the crushing, aggressive energy of visiting Alphas.

But as her hand grasped the iron handle of the cellar door, a strange sensation washed over her.

It hit her like a physical blow.

The heavy scent of the kitchen the roasting meat, the spices, the smoke vanished. The scent of the panicked cooks vanished. Even the sharp, bitter cold of the Silverpine winter faded into nothingness.

It was replaced by something else.

A scent so overwhelming, so intoxicatingly dark, that it forced the breath from her lungs. It smelled like ancient forests after a thunderstorm. Like ozone and raw, crackling power. Like dark amber and crushed pine needles.

Amara gasped, her knees trembling. Her hand slipped from the iron handle.

The scent was not just in the air. It was in her blood. It wrapped around her senses, pulling at a dormant, forgotten piece of her soul. It demanded her attention. It demanded her presence.

The kitchen doors slammed open.

The Silverpine Beta stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with frantic urgency. He pointed a trembling finger directly at the kitchen staff.

"Everyone outside!" the Beta roared. "The King demands the entire pack line up for the welcoming ceremony! No exceptions! Move!"

The cooks scrambled, dropping their utensils and rushing for the exit. Panic fueled their movements. Defying a direct command from the Alpha King was a death sentence.

Amara pressed herself against the brick wall, praying the Beta would not notice her in the shadows. She needed to get down the stairs. She needed to hide.

But the Beta's gaze snapped to her. "You too, the wolfless one! Outside! Now!"

Amara's blood ran cold.

"She is supposed to stay in the kitchen," Elias argued, stepping between Amara and the Beta. "Alpha Marcus gave the order."

"The King overrides Marcus!" the Beta snarled, grabbing Elias by the collar and shoving him toward the door. "The royal guard is doing a head count. If anyone is missing, they will tear this lodge apart. Move out to the courtyard!"

Amara had no choice.

She followed the terrified kitchen staff out the back door, stepping back into the freezing winter morning. The wind whipped her hair across her face, stinging her cheeks.

The entire Silverpine pack was gathered in the massive snowy courtyard in front of the lodge. Hundreds of wolves stood in rigid, silent rows. The air was thick with the smell of terror and submission.

Three massive, sleek black helicopters rested on the frozen clearing just beyond the courtyard. Their blades were slowing down, casting long, menacing shadows over the snow. The royal crest a silver wolf crowned in thorns gleamed on the dark metal.

Amara took her place at the very back of the formation, burying her raw hands deep into her jacket pockets. She kept her head bowed, staring at the snow-covered tips of her boots.

The heavy doors of the lead helicopter slid open.

A squad of royal guards stepped out first. They wore pitch-black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind dark visors. They moved with terrifying, synchronized precision, forming a protective barrier along the pathway to the lodge.

Then, the air pressure in the courtyard plummeted.

It was a physical shift. The gravity seemed to double. Several weaker Omegas in the front row gasped, dropping to their knees under the crushing weight of the aura bleeding from the helicopter.

Amara squeezed her eyes shut. The intoxicating scent of ozone and dark amber flared again, burning through her veins. Her chest tightened painfully. Her heart raced with a frantic, unfamiliar rhythm.

A man stepped out of the aircraft.

He did not wear tactical gear. He wore a perfectly tailored black overcoat that swept against the tops of his polished boots. He was tall, with broad, powerful shoulders and sharp, aristocratic features carved from cold marble. His dark hair was swept back, and his piercing eyes scanned the terrified pack with absolute, chilling indifference.

Thomas Veyre. The Alpha King.

Alpha Marcus rushed forward, his usual arrogance completely replaced by groveling submission. He dropped to one knee in the snow, bowing his head.

"Your Majesty," Marcus greeted, his voice trembling. "Silverpine welcomes you."

Thomas did not look at him.

The Alpha King stood perfectly still on the frozen gravel. His jaw tightened. His nostrils flared slightly, taking in the scent of the winter air.

Then, his terrifying gaze snapped up.

He looked past the kneeling Alpha. He looked past the rigid rows of strong warriors and high-ranking pack members. His eyes locked directly onto the back row.

Straight onto Amara.

Amara felt the impact of his stare like a physical strike to her chest. The air left her lungs. Every instinct she possessed screamed at her to drop her gaze, to bow her head, to submit like the rest of the pack.

But she didn't.

She stood frozen in the snow, her chin raised, staring right back into the lethal, dark eyes of the most dangerous man in the world.

Thomas Veyre did not blink. He took a slow, deliberate step forward, the terrifying scent of his power rolling across the courtyard like a tidal wave.

He was coming straight for her.
