Chapter 2

For three days, the ticking of the kitchen clock echoed in Clara's mind—a steady rhythm marking the night her marriage had cracked without a sound.

Alexander hadn't come home that night. Or the next.

When he finally appeared, his explanation had the same clipped, cold tone as his text message. "An old friend had a personal matter that required my immediate attention. My apologies about dinner."

No mention of their anniversary. No flicker of regret. No attempt to make things right. Just the cold efficiency of a man handling a domestic obligation like an inconvenient business transaction.

And now, three days later, Clara stood before the mirror in her dressing room, preparing for the Montenegro Foundation's Annual Charity Gala.

It was her husband's family's most important social event of the year—a vulgar display of wealth and calculated philanthropy where appearances were everything. To Clara, it was just another stage where she would play the part of the trophy wife. Silent. Obedient.

She chose a midnight-blue satin gown, fitted but conservative, with a boat neck and three-quarter sleeves. She pulled her hair into an elaborate updo, each pin a piece of armor, building a careful composure she hoped would deflect the knives she knew were coming.

She applied subtle makeup, emphasizing her eyes to mask the exhaustion that threatened to surface. She fastened the diamond necklace Alexander had given her for their first anniversary—a gift chosen by his secretary, no doubt—and drew a slow breath.

Alexander was waiting in the main hall. His bespoke tuxedo emphasized his athletic build and sharp jawline.

He was, without question, devastatingly handsome—the kind of man who stole the air from a room just by entering it. But to Clara, that handsome face was just a mask, hiding an emptiness she knew all too well.

"You're ready," he said, his gaze fixed on his gold cufflinks, not her. It wasn't a compliment. It was a statement of fact.

"Yes, Alexander," she replied, her voice flat, stripped of the warmth she'd once tried so hard to force into their exchanges.

The limousine ride was silent. Alexander scrolled through emails on his tablet, his face lit by the screen's blue glow, absorbed in anything but her. Clara watched the city lights slide past the window, feeling more alone inside the luxury car than she had ever felt anywhere else.

When they arrived at the Convention Center, they were blinded by the flash of cameras. Acting on pure PR instinct, Alexander slid his arm around Clara's waist and aimed a practiced smile at the press. Trained by three years of this ritual, she forced an identical smile of her own.

They were the picture of a perfect couple: powerful, wealthy, attractive. A beautifully packaged lie.

Inside, the ballroom was decorated with suffocating opulence. Rare orchids, crystal chandeliers, and a chamber orchestra playing soft melodies. The city's elite were all there, dressed in their finest and wearing their falsest smiles.

They hadn't been there long before Beatriz, Alexander's mother, descended on them. She wore a black haute couture suit, jewelry that could have paid a king's ransom, and her usual expression of aristocratic disdain.

She had been surrounded by a flock of fawning women, but the moment she spotted her son and daughter-in-law, she broke away, zeroing in on them like a hawk spotting its prey.

"Alexander, darling," she said, extending jeweled hands to take her son's, completely ignoring Clara. "I'm so glad you could make it. I was worried your... obligations... might keep you away."

"Mother," Alexander replied, kissing her cheek with practiced respect. "I wouldn't miss it."

Beatriz finally turned her gaze to Clara, her eyes traveling up and down with thinly veiled disapproval.

"Clara, dear," she said, her voice deliberately sweet. "I see you've chosen blue again. Such a... safe color. Though perhaps a bit dull for a night like this, don't you think? Well, I suppose restraint is a virtue in certain... circumstances."

It was the first cut of the night. A criticism disguised as fashion advice, meant to remind Clara of her place.

"Thank you for the advice, Beatriz," Clara replied, her voice low and steady, her smile frozen in place. "I'll keep that in mind."

"Oh, don't bother, dear," Beatriz said with a condescending chuckle. "Some things simply can't be learned. They're in the blood. Alexander, come with me—I need to introduce you to Senator Morales. Clara, I'm sure you can find something to occupy yourself. Try not to stand there like a statue. It makes a poor impression."

Alexander nodded and let his mother lead him away without a single glance back. Clara stood alone in the crowd. She could feel their stares—a mix of pity and mockery—pricking her back like needles. She took a champagne flute from a passing tray, not because she wanted a drink, but because she needed something to hold on to.

The night continued in the same vein. Beatriz would introduce her to friends with comments like, "This is Clara, Alexander's wife. She's so... quiet. Sometimes I forget she's even in the room."

Or, "Clara manages the household, you know. It's so important to have someone taking care of those little things while the men do the real work."

Each comment was a fresh cut, delivered with a smile. And Clara bore it all, head high, smile fixed, feeling a piece of her dignity chip away with every polite nod she returned.

Then she saw her.

Valeria stood near the bar, surrounded by a cluster of men hanging on her every word. She wore a vibrant red silk dress that demanded attention, her chestnut hair falling in perfect waves over her shoulders. She was beautiful, with a wild, magnetic energy that stood in sharp contrast to Clara's restrained elegance. But it wasn't her beauty that made Clara's chest tighten. It was the way Alexander was looking at her from across the room.

He had excused himself from Beatriz and was now moving toward Valeria with a purpose he never showed Clara. His face—usually so cold and distant—was lit with a concern and longing that made Clara's stomach churn.

She moved closer, drawn by a morbid need to see the full extent of the damage. She didn't want to look, but she couldn't stop herself.

"Valeria, I didn't know you'd be here," Alexander said, his voice soft, almost intimate, as he took her hand.

"Oh, Alex," Valeria replied, her voice trembling, her eyes wide and glistening with unshed tears. "I didn't want to come, truly. But Beatriz insisted... She said it was important for the foundation. And after what happened the other day... I've been feeling so fragile."

The words hit Clara like a physical blow. The other day. The "emergency" on their anniversary. It was her. The final piece of the puzzle clicked into place.

"You shouldn't have come if you weren't feeling well," Alexander said, his tone full of a concern Clara had never received. "You look pale. Here, sit down."

He guided her to a nearby sofa, completely ignoring Clara, who stood only a few feet away. Valeria, every inch the delicate heroine, let herself be led. She rested her head against Alexander's shoulder, sighing with calculated fragility.

"It's just... everything is so overwhelming," Valeria whispered, just loud enough for Clara to hear. "I feel so alone sometimes. And Beatriz is so kind to me, but... it isn't the same."

At that moment, as if on cue, Beatriz appeared. She approached the sofa, her expression shifting instantly from haughtiness to exaggerated maternal concern.

"Valeria, dear! What's wrong? Alexander, what have you done to this poor girl?"

"Nothing, Mother. She's just feeling a bit lightheaded."

"Oh, my poor angel," Beatriz cooed, sitting beside Valeria and stroking her hair. "I told you not to push yourself. Tonight is too much for you. You're so sensitive, so delicate. Not like some people, who are so thick-skinned."

Beatriz's gaze shot to Clara—a silent, pointed accusation.

Clara stood there, an intruder in her own life. Valeria—the woman her husband had canceled their anniversary for—was being comforted by her mother-in-law and her husband, while she, the wife, was ignored and publicly humiliated.

"Perhaps you should take her home, Alexander," Beatriz suggested. "She's in no condition to stay."

"Yes, Mother. You're right."

Alexander rose, helping Valeria to her feet. She clung to him, feigning weakness, and cast a quick, triumphant glance at Clara before hiding her face against his shoulder.

He finally looked at Clara. There was no apology in his eyes. No remorse. Only cold impatience.

"I'm taking Valeria home. She isn't well. Mother will stay with you. Try not to make a scene."

Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked away with Valeria, leaving Clara alone again with Beatriz.

"Well," Beatriz said, her voice reverting to its usual contempt. "I suppose that's that. Alexander has always been so chivalrous. He can't bear to see someone he truly cares about suffering. You should learn from Valeria, Clara. She knows how to awaken a man's protective instincts. You... well, you just seem to be there."

Clara looked at her mother-in-law, the champagne flute trembling in her hand. The Gala of Hypocrisy. The name echoed in her mind as the entire performance crashed down around her. The public humiliation, the brazen betrayal, Valeria's calculated act... it all swirled into a burning, deadening ache in her chest. But this time, she didn't swallow her tears. She didn't force a smile.

She simply turned and walked away from Beatriz, toward the exit, leaving behind the gala, the Montenegro name, and the wife she had tried so hard to be.

The ticking clock in her head finally went silent. It was time for a new song. One of frost and flame.
