Chapter 3

The cold night air stung Clara's face as she stepped out of the suffocating convention center.

The asphalt glistened under a light drizzle, reflecting the red and white of the traffic lights and the intermittent flashes from paparazzi still lurking near the entrance.

Her breath formed small clouds in the dark. She had escaped her mother-in-law's venomous grip, but the real punishment was only beginning.

In front of the main steps, Alexander's massive black SUV was already waiting, engine running, its chauffeur standing stoically under an umbrella. Beside the open door, Alexander held Valeria by the waist. She leaned limply against his chest, her face buried in the hollow of his neck.

Clara stopped a few feet away. She wanted to turn around, call a cab, and disappear into the night, but Alexander looked up, and their eyes met. His gaze was hard, a silent warning.

"Get in, Clara," he ordered, his voice low enough to avoid the photographers' notice. "Don't make a scene. I'm taking Valeria to her apartment, then we're going home."

Humiliation washed over her, absolute and suffocating. Not only had he abandoned her at the gala, but now he was forcing her into an enclosed space with the woman who had stolen her husband's heart.

But Clara was too exhausted to fight, with no strength left to argue. She nodded silently and got into the back, sliding to the far end of the wide leather seat.

Seconds later, Alexander settled Valeria in the middle seat before getting in beside her, creating an impenetrable physical barrier between himself and his wife. The door closed with a dull thud, cutting off the outside noise. The chauffeur pulled away, and the luxury SUV merged into the city's nighttime traffic.

The silence inside was dense, almost suffocating. The only sounds were the rain now lashing furiously against the tinted windows and the weak, almost theatrical sighs Valeria let out every now and then.

Clara turned her face to the window, watching the blurred lights of the streets. Her hands rested in her lap, clutching the small satin clutch so tightly her knuckles were white.

She could smell Valeria's cloyingly sweet perfume mingling with Alexander's woody cologne. She could hear the rustle of their clothes as he leaned over to whisper something in Valeria's ear—no doubt asking if she felt better, if she wanted the heat turned up.

Each gesture of concern he showed Valeria was a fresh stab of pain for Clara, a final confirmation of her own irrelevance.

What was she doing? Clara wondered, closing her eyes. Three years. Three years of trying to be enough for a man whose heart had always belonged to someone else.

The storm intensified. The rain became an impenetrable curtain of gray water, and the windshield wipers struggled to maintain any visibility. The chauffeur drove cautiously as he took the coastal avenue, a faster route but one that was dangerously winding in this weather.

Suddenly, everything came to a dead stop— a violent, instantaneous halt.

A massive cargo truck, having lost control on the wet asphalt, shot out from a side street. It had run a red light, emerging from the darkness like a steel beast.

Clara only had time to see two blinding headlights flood the interior before the world exploded.

The impact was deafening, a shriek of twisting metal and shattering glass that drowned out the driver's scream. The brutal force of the collision lifted the heavy SUV off the ground, sending it spinning wildly before it slammed into the bridge's guardrail.

The airbags deployed with a sharp thud. Gravity vanished for a terrifying instant, then slammed back with crushing fury.

When the movement finally stopped, the silence that followed was even more terrifying than the crash.

The car had flipped onto its right side, trapped between the concrete barrier and the edge of the precipice overlooking the raging river. The darkness inside was nearly absolute, pierced only by the frantic flashing of emergency lights from the shattered dashboard.

Clara blinked, trying to focus. Her ears were ringing. An unmistakable metallic taste filled her mouth: blood. She tried to move, but a sharp, stabbing pain shot through her left side. She looked down through the chaos of shadows and debris.

The door on her side—the side that took the impact—had caved inward, trapping her legs in a mass of twisted steel and plastic. She couldn't free herself.

A sinister hissing began to fill the cabin. It took Clara a second to identify the sharp, chemical smell invading her nostrils. Gasoline. The tank had ruptured.

"Alex!" The cry was shrill, hysterical, shattering the stunned silence. It was Valeria. "Alex, it hurts! Get me out of here, please!"

In front of Clara, a shadow shifted. Alexander coughed, shaking his head to clear the fog. He was disoriented, a cut on his forehead already bleeding freely down onto his white shirt, but he could move. The airbags on his side had done their job.

"Val... Valeria, I'm here," Alexander murmured, his voice hoarse from the smoke seeping in from the engine. His survival instinct—and something deeper—made him turn immediately toward the woman in the middle.

"My arm hurts! Alex, there's smoke! I'm scared!" Valeria sobbed, clutching the billionaire's torn jacket.

Clara summoned all her strength. The pain was unbearable, but the panic of burning to death began to override the physical agony.

"Alexander..." Clara's voice came out as a broken whisper. She coughed, spitting blood. "Alexander, my legs. I'm trapped."

He froze. For a split second, he turned toward Clara. In the dim, flickering light of electrical sparks, their eyes met.

She saw the panic in his gaze, saw the frantic calculation as he assessed the scene. The hood began to glow with orange flashes. The fire had started.

"I can't move," Clara pleaded, stretching a trembling hand toward him. "I smell gasoline. Help me."

A sudden flame erupted from the engine, flooding the cabin with a terrifying, day-bright light. The fire was spreading fast, eating through the dashboard. Time was running out. They only had seconds before it reached the fuel pooling beneath the wreck.

Alexander looked at Clara, trapped under tons of twisted metal, a task that would require time and strength to free her. Then he looked at Valeria, who wasn't trapped, only terrified and clinging to his neck, begging him not to let her die.

In that single, suspended moment, Clara saw the decision form in his eyes. There was no anguish, no desperate struggle to save them both. Just a cold, mathematical choice, made for the only person whose life he truly valued.

"I'll get you out, Val. Calm down, I've got you," Alexander said, kicking with all his strength at what remained of the front windshield until the glass gave way.

"Alexander, no!" Clara tried to scream, but the smoke flooded her lungs, drowning her voice in a wracking cough.

Alexander grabbed Valeria by the shoulders and dragged her through the gap in the shattered windshield. He crawled out onto the hot hood, pulling Valeria until she was safe on the wet asphalt.

Clara watched the scene through the broken glass. She saw the figure of her husband, the man she had silently loved for years, standing in the rain, embracing another woman to shield her from the cold.

He turned one last time toward the burning wreck. Clara stared at him. The temperature inside the car was now unbearable. The flames were devouring the front seats.

"Clara, hold on!" Alexander shouted from a distance, his voice barely audible over the crackling of the fire. "I'll get help! The fire trucks are coming!"

And then, simply, he turned and ran with Valeria in his arms, moving away from the imminent explosion.

He left her there. He abandoned her to burn alive.

The heat blistered her skin, but a devastating cold froze her from the inside out. The pain from her crushed legs was nothing compared to the sheer force of his betrayal. Their marriage wasn't just broken; it was a lie, a thing of dust and ashes. He had looked her in the eye and, without hesitation, condemned her to death.

Sirens began to wail in the distance, cutting through the night like a piercing lament. The fire reached the dashboard. Clara let her head fall back, closing her eyes. She no longer cried. She no longer felt fear. As consciousness slipped away through the toxic smoke and agonizing pain, the submissive, devoted, patient Clara died in that inferno of iron and fire.

If by some miracle she survived this night, the man disappearing into the darkness would come to regret the day he chose to let her burn.
