Chapter 3

Rose gripped the edges of the plush white towel, her knuckles aching. Every instinct in her body screamed at her to turn around, walk down those stairs, and drag her parents out into the flooding storm. Anywhere was better than this. Anywhere was better than standing in a dripping, plaster-stained uniform inside the pristine guest room of Dean Arthur.

Dean didn't move from the adjoining doorway. He kept his arms crossed over his chest, his dark eyes tracking the muddy water pooling around her squeaking sneakers. The lazy, mocking smirk he wore in the school hallways was gone, replaced by a cold, sharp disdain.

"You've got a lot of nerve bringing your mess into my house, Woods," he said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that cut right through the sound of the rain outside.

Rose forced her chin up, her voice instantly freezing into a razor-sharp edge. "Trust me, Arthur, if my roof hadn't literally caved in, I wouldn't breathe the same air as you, let alone stand under your roof. Your mother invited us. Go complain to her if your precious floors are too good for charity cases."

Dean let out a short, harsh laugh. He walked fully into the room, invading her space until she was forced to tilt her head back just to keep eyes on him. He smelled like mint and expensive laundry detergent—infuriatingly clean compared to her damp, chaotic state.

"Charity is exactly what this is," he murmured, leaning down slightly so his sharp jawline was level with her eyes. He reached out, his fingers deliberately hooking the strap of her damp backpack and shoving it off her shoulder. It hit the floor with a heavy, wet thud. "In case you forgot, you're in my wing of the house. The bathroom has a lock. Use it. And don't touch anything that doesn't belong to you."

He didn't hand her clothes. He didn't offer a dry sweater. He just turned on his heel, walked toward the glass French doors leading to the balcony, and threw them open, letting the cold, damp wind whip into the room.

"Where are you going?" Rose snapped, shivering as the draft hit her wet uniform.

"Away from you," Dean said without looking back. He stepped out onto the wide, stone-tiled balcony that connected their two rooms, slamming the glass doors shut behind him.

By the time Rose washed the plaster dust out of her hair and changed into the emergency set of spare clothes her mother had packed in a plastic bag, the clock on the wall read midnight. The heavy downpour had slowed to a rhythmic, steady drizzle.

Driven by an agitated, restless energy, Rose walked over to the balcony doors and pushed them open. She needed air. She needed to ground herself.

She didn't expect him to still be out there.

Dean was leaning his forearms against the wrought-iron railing, staring out at the distant, glowing lights of the city. He had his black hoodie pulled up, his broad shoulders tensed against the cold night air. A single earbud was shoved into his ear.

Rose walked to the railing, deliberately keeping a massive, six-foot distance between them.

Dean didn't turn his head, but his jaw clenched. He pulled the earbud out, letting it dangle against his chest. "I thought I told you to stay inside, Woods. You're ruining the view."

"The air belongs to everyone, Arthur," Rose retorted, her hands gripping the cold iron rail. "Or did your dad buy the atmosphere too?"

Dean turned slowly, leaning his lower back against the railing and crossing his arms. In the dim, amber light of the balcony fixtures, his eyes looked pitch black, glinting with a dangerous, competitive malice.

"You really don't know when to shut your mouth, do you?" he said, his voice dropping into a quiet, threatening purr. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, cutting the distance between them in half. "You're a guest in my house, surviving on my family’s dime tonight, and you're still trying to bark like you own the place."

Rose didn't back down. She stepped closer too, until they were barely a foot apart, the heavy, suffocating friction between them crackling like a live wire in the midnight air. "I don't care whose house this is. Tomorrow at 7:45 AM, we go back to reality. You're just the guy holding my number one spot, and I'm still going to destroy you on the midterms."

Dean’s gaze dropped to her mouth, then snapped back up to her flashing brown eyes. A dark, intense spark ignited in his expression—not of warmth, but of pure, unyielding challenge. He leaned down, his breath warm against her cold cheek.

"I'd love to see you try," he whispered, his voice dangerously smooth. "But tonight? You're playing by my rules. Go to bed, Rose. Before I have my driver drop you back off at your leaking house."

He turned and walked back into his bedroom, throwing his doors shut and pulling the heavy velvet curtains closed, leaving Rose alone in the dark with a racing pulse and a burning, vicious hatred that felt entirely too loud.
