Chapter 4

The morning sun broke through the remaining storm clouds, but inside the Arthur mansion, Rose felt like she was walking to her execution. Her school uniform had been dried and pressed by the house staff, but putting it on did nothing to ease the humiliation of sleeping under Dean's roof.

She hurried down the grand staircase, eager to slip out and find a bus, but Eleanor Arthur intercepted her near the foyer with a warm, unwavering smile.

"Rose, dear! Perfect timing," Eleanor said, handing her a travel mug of tea. "The lower neighborhood roads are still completely blocked, so the transit buses aren't running. Dean is just heading out to the garage for his morning basketball practice. Since you're both attending Oakridge High anyway, you're riding with him. No arguments."

Rose's stomach dropped. "Mrs. Arthur, really, I can walk—"

"In this humidity? Absolutely not. Dean!" his mother called out.

Dean emerged from the hallway, a gym bag slung over his shoulder. He looked perfectly put-together in his uniform, his hair slightly damp, his expression cold. He didn't even look at Rose. He just grabbed his car keys off the counter and walked past her without a word.

"Go on, dear," Eleanor urged gently.

Rose swallowed her pride and followed him out to the garage. She pulled open the passenger door of his sleek, dark sedan and slid inside. The door hadn't even fully closed before Dean cranked the ignition, shifted into reverse, and tore out of the driveway.

Instantly, the car's speakers exploded with aggressive, heavy-bass hip-hop. The volume was so deafening that the dashboard literally vibrated. Dean gripped the steering wheel, eyes fixed on the road, completely ignoring her presence as if she were a piece of unwanted luggage.

The rattling brass was giving Rose a migraine, but more than that, the sheer disrespect made her blood boil.

With a sharp snap of her wrist, Rose reached over to the dashboard and violently twisted the volume knob down to absolute zero.

The sudden silence in the car was jarring.

Dean’s knuckles went white on the steering wheel. He slammed his foot on the brake, bringing the sedan to a screeching halt at the edge of the estate's private road. He snapped his head around, his dark eyes flashing with pure fury as he glared at her.

"Who the hell said you could touch my radio, Woods?" he growled, his voice dangerously low.

"We need to talk, Arthur," Rose snapped back, turning her entire torso to face him, refusing to let him intimidate her. "I don't care about your terrible taste in music. We need to establish boundaries before we get anywhere near campus. I don't want a single soul at Oakridge High to know we came to school together."

Dean let out a harsh, mocking laugh, leaning back into his leather seat. "You think you're the one who needs protection? Look at you." He gestured loosely at her. "You think I want my crowd seeing me pull up with a charity case? It’s bad enough my mom is hosting you, but if the girls at school see you sliding out of my passenger seat, my entire social life takes a hit. I don't need a charity project ruining my prospects with the people who actually matter. Everyone would be completely blindsided to see me with someone as low-level as you."

The "low-level" comment hit Rose like a physical slap, but she channeled the sting into pure, unadulterated venom. She leaned forward, invading his space, her brown eyes drilling into his.

"Good. Then we are on the exact same page," Rose hissed. "Because I would rather eat glass than have people think I'm associated with an arrogant neanderthal like you. So here is the contract, Arthur: **The 100-Meter Rule.**"

Dean’s eyebrows pulled together, his smirk faltering. "The what?"

"The 100-Meter Rule," Rose repeated coldly. "You pull over exactly one hundred meters away from the school gates. I get out there and walk the rest of the way. At school, we don't look at each other, we don't speak, and we pretend we have never breathed the same air. Deal?"

Dean stared at her for a long, heavy second, his jaw tight as he digested her terms. The sheer hostility between them was thick enough to suffocate.

"Deal," Dean muttered, his voice sharp as flint. "Get ready to walk, Madame President."

He slammed his foot on the gas, the car rocketing forward. True to the rule, the second the school gates appeared in the distance, Dean violently pulled over to the curb next to a row of oak trees, exactly a hundred meters out.

"Get out," he commanded, not even looking at her.

Rose popped the door open, stepping out into the humid morning air. "With pleasure." She slammed the door shut behind her, her heart hammering with a mixture of rage and adrenaline.

She thought the boundary would keep her safe. She thought she had successfully hidden her humiliation.

But twenty minutes later, Rose was sitting in her front-row seat in third-period AP Seminar. Dean was at the very back, leaning his chair against the wall, completely ignoring her.

Then, Mr. Harrison slammed his clipboard onto the podium.

"Settle down," the strict advisor announced. "Your final senior thesis accounts for thirty percent of your grade and determines the university recommendations. This year, the board has mandated paired projects. I have paired the highest-ranking students together to ensure competitive integrity."

Mr. Harrison looked up, his eyes locking onto the front row.

"Rose Woods and Dean Arthur. You two will be partners for the remainder of the semester."

The classroom erupted into hushed whispers. Rose felt the air leave her lungs. Slowly, breaking the very rule she had just created, she turned her head to look at the back of the room.

Dean’s chair slammed down onto the floor. The arrogant, unbothered expression was completely gone, replaced by absolute fury as his dark eyes locked onto hers. The universe had just shattered their 100-meter boundary on day one.
