Chapter 4

On Tuesday evening, Grant spent ten minutes fixing his hair in the bathroom mirror.

He wore his best charcoal suit. He sprayed his cologne twice on his neck, right over his pulse points.

"Dinner with the Carlyle Group," he told me as he buttoned his cuffs. "A massive new portfolio. I might be late, Sav."

He leaned down and kissed my cheek. His lips were dry.

"Take your time," I said softly, smoothing his lapel. "Good luck with the pitch."

"What would I do without you?" he chuckled, grabbing his coat.

"You'll find out soon," I thought.

An hour after he walked out the door, I sat in my home office. A mug of green tea sat steaming beside my keyboard. I opened my private browser and pulled up Ophelia’s secret account.

A fresh story had just gone live.

It was a tight shot of a dimly lit table. Crisp white linen. A flickering votive candle in a frosted glass holder. A single, dark red rose lay next to an empty wine goblet.

The geotag read: *The Whitby Bar, Midtown.*

Grant had stopped trying to hide. A full decade of getting away with it had made him lazy. He thought he was untouchable. He thought I was blind.

I took a screenshot. I cropped the image, logged the exact timestamp into my digital spreadsheet, and saved it to the master folder.

Then I closed the window. I didn't feel my heart jump. My hands didn't shake. I simply picked up my highlighter and went back to reviewing the commercial real estate prospectus on my desk.

Four days before the gala, I took the train down to Marcus Webb’s office.

The conference room was quiet. Dust motes drifted through the pale morning sun. Marcus set a thick stack of papers on the mahogany table.

"This is the final draft," Marcus said, leaning back in his leather chair. "Take your time."

I didn't sit down. I stood at the edge of the table and turned each page slowly. I read every line, every condition, every number.

"Two questions," I said, looking up.

"Shoot."

"First," I tapped the fourth page. "Does the Upper West Side condo transfer fully to Emmie’s trust the moment this is filed?"

"Immediately," Marcus said. "His signature from last week waived all claim. It belongs entirely to your daughter."

"Second," I turned to page twelve. "The emergency freeze on the three Delaware LLCs. What time does that trigger?"

"Tomorrow night at nine-fifteen," Marcus answered. A slight, shark-like smile touched his mouth. "Thirty minutes after your toast. He won't have time to move a single dime."

"Good."

I picked up the black pen on the table. My hand was steady. I signed my legal name on the dotted line.

Marcus stamped his seal beside my signature. I took the document and slid it into a heavy cream envelope. It fit neatly into the zippered inner pocket of my evening clutch.

At home, my dress was already hanging in the master closet.

I had bought it six months ago at a boutique in SoHo. It was a floor-length crimson gown made of heavy, structured silk. The red was deep and sharp, the color of fresh blood. Back then, I told myself I bought it for no reason.

Now, I understood. Some quiet, buried part of me had known the truth before my brain caught up.

It wasn't a party dress. It was armor.

The afternoon before the gala, the apartment smelled like lemon oil. The cleaners had just left.

My mother had taken Emmie to an afternoon pottery workshop in Brooklyn. The rooms were silent. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the autumn sky over Manhattan was pale and sharp.

My phone buzzed on the marble kitchen island.

*Ophelia Martinez.*

I tapped the screen and put it on speaker.

"Savanna!"

Her voice bounced through the empty kitchen, high and breathless.

"Everything is set," she gushed. "I just left the venue. The florist finished the arch. We used white calla lilies and blush garden roses flown in from Holland. It looks like a dream."

"That sounds lovely, Ophelia," I said, pouring hot water into a cup.

"And the lighting!" she continued, speaking fast. "I had them dim the overheads and set up warm amber uplighting along the glass terrace. The champagne pour is locked in for eight-forty-five sharp. When the waiter hands you and Grant your flutes, that's your cue to step onto the riser."

She let out a soft, dramatic sigh.

"Sav, it's going to be the most beautiful night," she said, her voice dropping into that familiar, sweet whisper she had used since college. "Honestly. No one deserves this more than you two."

I walked over to the tall glass window. Down below, yellow cabs crawled through the streets like tiny ants. The river in the distance looked like a strip of dark steel.

A small, quiet smile touched my lips.

"Yes," I said smoothly into the phone. "It really is going to be something."
