Chapter 5

That evening, I tucked Emmie into bed.

Her room was warm and quiet. The small lamp on her nightstand cast a soft yellow circle over her pink quilt. She hugged her worn stuffed rabbit to her chest, her dark eyes looking right up at me.

"Mom?" she asked.

"Yes, honey?" I pulled the blanket up to her chin.

"Is tomorrow a big party?"

"Yes," I said gently. "A very big party."

She paused. Her little hands tightened around the rabbit's ears. She had her grandfather’s habit of going completely still before speaking.

"Are you happy, Mom?"

The question hung in the quiet room. She was only nine, but she always noticed the shifts in the air. She could feel the silence between Grant and me, even when we smiled.

I looked at her for a long moment. I looked at her dark, steady eyes.

"I'm going to be," I said softly.

I leaned down and kissed her forehead. She smelled like baby shampoo and clean cotton.

"Go to sleep now, Emmie."

"Goodnight, Mom."

I turned off the lamp and left the door cracked open. Then I walked down the hall to my bedroom.

For the last three weeks, my chest had felt like a tight knot of wires. Every night, my mind had raced with spreadsheets, flight numbers, and timestamps. But tonight, the noise was gone.

I lay down on the cool sheets. I closed my eyes. Within five minutes, I fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.

The smell of coffee woke me the next morning.

I walked into the kitchen wearing my silk robe. Grant was already standing by the marble island. He wore crisp gray slacks and a fresh white shirt, looking like a man who had the world in his pocket.

On the counter sat a large bouquet of white peonies. They were lush, fragrant, and expensive. My favorite.

"Happy tenth anniversary, Sav," he said with a wide, easy grin.

He walked over and wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me in. He smelled like mint toothpaste and expensive aftershave. He looked so proud of himself. He truly believed he was a master of his own universe. A devoted husband, a rising executive, a man who got away with everything.

"Thank you, Grant," I said softly.

I leaned in and pressed a light kiss to his cheek. My lips barely brushed his skin.

I took the flowers, brought them to the sink, and trimmed the stems with kitchen shears. The sharp *snip* of each cut felt remarkably satisfying. I placed them in a heavy crystal vase and set them on the dining table.

"I have a meeting at eleven," Grant said, glancing at his watch. "Then I need to pick up my tux from the tailor. I'll meet you at the venue at seven-thirty?"

"Seven-thirty is perfect," I replied, pouring myself a cup of black coffee.

"You're the best, Savanna. Really." He smiled, patted my shoulder, and headed down the hall toward the master bathroom.

A moment later, I heard the shower turn on.

I took a slow sip of my coffee. On the kitchen counter, right next to the fruit bowl, Grant had left his second phone face-down.

It was the black burner from his gym bag. He had gotten so comfortable in our home that he didn't even bother hiding it anymore.

The phone vibrated.

*Bzz. Bzz.*

The screen lit up against the dark marble, two short pulses.

I didn't move. I didn't reach for it. I didn't need to read the message. I already knew who it was, and I already knew what it said.

I took another sip of my coffee, turned my back on the phone, and looked out at the morning sun hitting the skyline.

By five o'clock, the apartment was empty.

Grant was already downtown. My mother had picked up Emmie two hours earlier to get her dressed at their brownstone.

I was alone.

I took a long shower. I blow-dried my hair until it fell straight and sleek past my shoulders. Then, sitting at my vanity, I did my makeup with slow, unhurried precision. A clean sweep of black eyeliner. A subtle dusting of powder. And on my lips, a shade of deep, bold red.

I stood up and unzipped the garment bag hanging on the closet door.

The crimson gown slid out like heavy water.

I stepped into it. The structured silk hugged my waist and fell straight to the floor, parting slightly at the left thigh. The color was stunning—a fierce, unapologetic red that demanded attention.

I zipped it up, fastened the clasp, and slipped on a pair of black strappy heels.

Then I turned and faced the full-length mirror.

I didn't check for stray threads. I didn't adjust my hair. I simply stood there and looked at myself.

The woman in the glass didn't look like a betrayed wife. She didn't look like someone who had spent ten years being lied to. She looked calm. Cold. Untouchable.

I reached for the black satin clutch on my dresser.

I slid my hand inside and felt the stiff, sharp edge of the cream envelope. Inside were the divorce papers, signed by me, stamped with Marcus Webb's legal seal.

The weight of it felt solid in my palm. Like a loaded gun.

I snapped the clutch shut, picked up my coat, and walked out the door.
