Chapter 3

The days turned into a sharp, quiet test.

I cooked dinner three or four nights a week. Pan-seared salmon, roasted asparagus, garlic mashed potatoes—all of Grant’s favorites. We sat under the soft amber light of our dining room chandelier. He talked about his clients and his quarterly numbers. I listened. I nodded. I laughed at his predictable jokes.

When he reached across the table to touch my fingers, I didn’t pull away. I kept my hand relaxed. Warm.

"You're amazing, Sav," he said one Tuesday, smiling into his wineglass. "Most wives would complain about how late I work."

"You work hard for this family, Grant," I replied softly.

My voice was smooth silk. Inside my chest, the rage was a hard, glowing coal. Every delayed smile was a trigger held back.

From the front hallway closet, a faint vibration broke through the quiet. A low, rhythmic buzz against nylon. It was coming from the secret phone tucked into the lining of his leather gym bag. Three short bursts. A text.

Grant didn’t flinch, but his eyes darted toward the hall. His thumb twitched against the stem of his glass.

"Probably an automated alert from the trading desk," he muttered.

"Don't worry about it," I said, offering him a calm smile. "Finish your dinner."

He had no idea I was counting down the hours.

On Saturday morning, I met Ophelia for brunch in SoHo.

The restaurant was bright, bathed in white marble and autumn sunshine. Ophelia looked radiant. She wore a tailored camel coat and a cashmere scarf. Her dark hair fell in perfect waves around her shoulders. She slid into the booth across from me and immediately squeezed both of my hands.

"I have the final mock-ups," she said, her eyes sparkling. "Sav, you're going to lose your mind."

She pulled an iPad from her tote bag and laid it on the table. She swiped through floor plans, floral mock-ups, and lighting palettes.

"White calla lilies and pale blush roses," she explained, tapping the screen. "Black-tie elegance. I booked the rooftop at The Conrad. It has a full panoramic view of the skyline. We have the string quartet for the cocktail hour, and the caterers are pouring Dom Pérignon for the toast."

"It's breathtaking, Phee," I said. My voice was full of genuine admiration. "You really outdid yourself."

"Only the best for my favorite couple," she beamed.

I looked closer at the floor plan. "What about the screens?"

"Right here," she pointed. "Two large LED walls tucked near the terrace doors. We can play your wedding video during the cocktail hour."

I tapped my chin, shaking my head slightly.

"No," I said. "Move them to center stage. Right behind the main head table. Suspended high enough so every single guest can see them without turning their chairs."

Ophelia hesitated. "Center stage? Won't that overpower the floral arch?"

"Grant deserves a grand gesture," I said, leaning in. I offered her my warmest, most trusting smile. "Ten years of loyalty, Ophelia. I want every business partner, every board member, and every friend to see our story. Nobody should miss a single frame."

Ophelia’s smile widened. A soft, satisfied glow filled her face. She truly thought she was helping me build a monument to my own perfect marriage.

"You're right," she agreed, scribbling a note with her stylus. "Center stage it is. The visual impact will be huge."

"Huge," I echoed. "Thank you, darling. I don't know what I'd do without you."

On Monday afternoon, I took a cab down to a nondescript office in the Financial District.

I didn't use Ophelia's event production crew. I hired Leo, an independent freelance AV specialist recommended by my father's firm. He was quiet, bearded, and didn't ask personal questions. He liked cash, and I gave him double his usual day rate.

I handed him a black, encrypted flash drive.

"The client wants this exact video file cued up for eight-forty-five p.m.," I told him. "Right when the champagne is poured for the anniversary toast. You run it directly from your private rig. Do not hook into the event planner's laptop."

"Got it," Leo said, turning the drive over in his hand. "No cross-connections. My feed overrides everything on the main screens."

"Precisely."

That night, after putting Emmie to bed, I sat alone at my desk in the dark.

I plugged the master drive into my laptop. The file was labeled *A Decade Together*.

I clicked play.

The timeline unfolded with surgical clarity.

Year One: Grant on a "business trip" in Miami, followed by a cropped photo of his bare shoulders from Ophelia’s secret account, geotagged at the same beachfront resort.

Year Three: A screenshot of a five-thousand-dollar wire transfer from our joint account, matched to a post of Ophelia showing off a diamond pendant with the caption: *He spoils me.*

Year Six: A bedroom mirror selfie of Ophelia in a silk robe, with Grant’s monogrammed dress watch sitting on the bedside table behind her.

Year Ten: The latest screenshots. The coded captions. The hotel room keys. The receipts for the Cartier watch and the St. Barts flight.

It was twelve minutes of cold, undeniable truth. Every receipt. Every betrayal. Perfectly formatted. In high resolution.

I sat motionless in the blue light of the screen. My eyes were completely dry.

I watched it from beginning to end. Then I dragged the progress bar back to the start and watched it a second time.

When the screen faded to black, I closed the laptop.

The stage was set. The trap was ready. All that was left was the party.
