Chapter 2

Claire Nguyen came through my father’s network. She was small, sharp, and moved like a shadow.

We met at a quiet coffee shop in Tribeca. I slid an ironclad non-disclosure agreement across the marble table. She signed it without blinking, took the preliminary bank statements I gave her, and opened her laptop.

"Give me two weeks, Mrs. Stevens," she said. Her voice was flat and professional. "If he hid a single penny, I’ll find it."

She was as good as her word.

Fourteen days later, a courier delivered a thick black binder to my apartment.

It was nearly midnight. Emmie was sound asleep in her bedroom down the hall, curled up with her stuffed rabbit. Grant was at another late dinner, supposedly wooing a prospective client in Midtown.

I sat alone at the kitchen island with a mug of black tea. I opened the binder.

Claire had done a masterpiece of forensic accounting. Page after page laid out a quiet, decade-long siphon. Grant had created three separate shell LLCs registered in Delaware. He moved money in small, careful increments. Ten thousand here. Fifteen thousand there. Just low enough to avoid raising flags on our joint accounts.

The total at the bottom of the summary page made my chest go cold.

Eight hundred and fourteen thousand dollars.

He had stolen nearly a million dollars from our family. From me. From his own daughter.

I didn't scream. I didn't break a glass. I turned the pages one by one, checking every wire transfer and every routing number. When I reached the last sheet, I closed the binder. I pulled my little black notebook from my purse, clicked my pen, and wrote:

*2. Forensic documentation — complete.*

The next evening, Grant was sitting in the den with a tumbler of bourbon. He had his feet kicked up on the leather ottoman, scrolling through his phone. He looked smug and relaxed.

I walked in carrying a beige folder and set it gently on his lap.

"What's this, Sav?" he asked, glancing up.

"It’s for Emmie," I said softly. I sat on the arm of his chair and smoothed the lapel of his shirt. "I talked to our financial advisor yesterday. With the market fluctuating, we need to lock down her future."

He frowned a little, looking down at the legal header. "A trust?"

"An irrevocable trust," I said. My voice was sweet and light. "And a two-bedroom condo on the Upper West Side. We can buy it under the trust’s name using our joint investment reserve. It protects the assets from taxes, and Emmie gets guaranteed equity by the time she turns eighteen."

Grant hesitated. His hand drifted to his wedding band. He twisted it once. "That’s a huge chunk of our liquid capital, Savanna. We might need that cash for—"

"For what, Grant?" I tilted my head, looking directly into his eyes. "What could be more important than our daughter’s security? Unless you have other plans for that money?"

The question hung in the air like a blade.

He blinked. His throat bobbed. He couldn't risk looking defensive, not when he thought he had so much to hide.

"No," he said quickly, forcing a laugh. "Of course not. Emmie comes first. Always."

"I knew you'd agree," I smiled, offering him a sleek Montblanc pen. "I already signed my part. You just need to sign pages four and eight. I'll take it to the notary tomorrow."

Grant didn't read the fine print. He never did. He believed I was just his supportive, wealthy wife who managed domestic life while he conquered the world.

He scribbled his signature across both lines.

With two strokes of a pen, he legally locked over a million dollars of marital assets into Emmie's name. It was untouchable. Beyond his unilateral control forever.

"Good boy," I thought.

I took the papers, kissed his forehead, and said, "I'll let you get back to your work."

The next morning at ten, I walked into the law offices of Webb & Vance.

Marcus Webb was waiting for me in the corner conference room. He was my father’s chief litigator. He had a reputation in Manhattan for turning divorce proceedings into bloodbaths.

I slid Claire’s financial binder across the mahogany table. Marcus flipped through the tabs, his sharp eyes widening slightly behind his wire-rimmed glasses.

"Eight hundred thousand in hidden accounts," Marcus murmured. A slow, predatory grin spread across his face. "This is intentional dissipation of marital assets. Fraudulent concealment. A judge will eat him alive."

"I don't just want him to lose, Marcus," I said calmly. "I want eighty percent of the remaining marital estate. He leaves with his clothes and his bad habits."

"Consider it done," Marcus said, jotting a note. "The evidence is airtight. But what about the other woman?"

I opened my purse and pulled out a second stack of paper. It was the complete printout of Ophelia’s secret Instagram account, cross-referenced with Claire's credit card audits.

"Grant bought her a Cartier Santos watch for her thirty-second birthday," I said, tapping the paper. "A leased BMW four years ago. First-class flights to St. Barts. Weekend suites at the Four Seasons. Total value: three hundred and twenty thousand dollars."

Marcus chuckled, shaking his head. "All paid for with marital funds without your consent."

"I want a separate civil action against Ophelia Martinez," I told him. My voice was ice. "For the full recovery of every gift, trip, and dollar spent on her. File it under fraudulent conveyance."

"Her parents will have to liquidate their retirement savings to bail her out," Marcus noted.

"I know," I replied. "Draft the summons. But don't file anything yet."

"When do you want to drop the hammer?"

I looked out the high window at the New York skyline.

"In one week," I said softly. "At our tenth anniversary gala. Right before dessert."
