Chapter 1

Three weeks before our tenth wedding anniversary, I was alone on the sofa.

The living room was dark except for the glow of my phone. Grant was out at a late dinner with corporate clients. Or so he had told me.

I scrolled through Instagram with half an eye. Then an account popped up under suggested friends. The handle was unfamiliar, but the name struck me: Marie Vance. Marie was Ophelia’s middle name. Vance was her grandmother’s maiden name. Only someone who had been her best friend since freshman year at NYU would recognize it.

I tapped the screen.

The grid opened. It was a private world of coded captions and shadow-drenched photos. In one picture, a man’s hand rested on a hotel nightstand. The fingers were long, the knuckles slightly crooked. There was a faint pale line on the ring finger where a wedding band belonged. I knew that hand. I had held it for ten years.

I kept scrolling. Hotel check-ins in Chicago, Miami, Boston. The dates lined up perfectly with Grant’s business trips. Every single one. And every weekend he was "traveling," Ophelia had texted me saying she was swamped at her PR agency.

A decade. Not a brief lapse. An entire parallel life.

My heart didn't race. My hands didn't shake. Instead, an absolute, freezing stillness settled into my chest. I sat there in the dark and took screenshots. I captured every photo, every hotel geotag, every cryptic caption. I uploaded them into a locked folder, then backed it up twice.

At midnight, the front door clicked open.

Grant walked in. He loosened his silk tie and rubbed the back of his neck.

"Rough night?" I asked softly from the sofa.

He jumped a little. Then he smiled his smooth, rehearsed smile. "Brutal. The board members wouldn't stop arguing over quarterly projections."

He leaned down to kiss my cheek. A faint wave of tuberose and citrus drifted off his collar. It was Ophelia’s signature scent. He didn't even bother to wash it off.

I didn't flinch. I stood up, walked to the kitchen island, and poured a glass of cabernet.

"You work too hard, Grant," I said, handing him the glass. My lips curved into a warm, gentle smile. "Sit down. Relax."

He took the wine, looking relieved. "What would I do without you, Sav?"

"I wonder," I murmured.

The next morning, I called Ophelia at nine sharp. I made sure my voice sounded light, bright, and breathless.

"Ophelia! I have a huge favor to ask," I said.

"Anything for you, babe," her voice came through warm and familiar. The voice of a sister. "What’s up?"

"Our tenth anniversary is in three weeks," I said. "I want to throw a massive gala. A rooftop venue in Manhattan. Everyone needs to be there—family, clients, friends. But I'm swamped with Emmie’s school events. You’re the best PR director in the city. Will you plan it for us?"

There was a tiny beat of silence on the line. Then Ophelia gave a breathless laugh.

"Savanna, are you kidding? I’d love to. You and Grant deserve the absolute best night of your lives. Leave it entirely to me."

"Thank you, sweetie," I said. "I trust your vision completely."

I hung up. I pulled a small black notebook from my bag, clicked my pen, and wrote:

*1. Hand Ophelia the rope.*

The performance had begun. Only now, I was directing it.

At two that afternoon, I took the private elevator up to my father’s corner office in Midtown.

Richard Warren sat behind an expansive walnut desk overlooking Central Park. He was seventy-one, with silver hair and eyes that missed nothing. He looked up, sensing the shift in the air before I even sat down.

"Savanna," he said. "What happened?"

I didn't cry. I laid my phone on his desk and opened the folder. I talked for eight straight minutes. I walked him through the fake account, the matching itineraries, the ten years of betrayal between my husband and my best friend.

My father listened in complete silence. His face didn't move. When I finished, he reached out and slowly straightened the three silver pens beside his blotter, aligning them to the millimeter.

"What do you need from me?" he asked. His voice was low and steady.

"Nothing yet," I said. "Let them walk into the trap. But the second the party is over, every door you opened for Grant must close. Every client. Every board introduction. Every dollar."

My father met my eyes. He gave a single, firm nod. "Consider him a ghost."

The meeting lasted twelve minutes. It was the most consequential twelve minutes of Grant Stevens's life.

That evening, I drove out to Westchester to see my mother.

Dorothy Warren was trimming hydrangeas in the sunroom. When I told her the truth over tea, she didn't gasp. She didn't drop her cup. Her gaze hardened into cold steel.

"I knew it," my mother said quietly, setting down her shears. "I always felt it. That girl looked at you with too much hunger. She wanted your skin, Savanna."

"She’s going to get the spotlight she always wanted," I replied.

My mother touched my hand, her fingers warm and steady. "What do we do with the Martinez family?"

"Dad will handle Grant’s career," I said. "You handle their world. When the truth comes out, they need to know what it costs to take from a Warren."

My mother smiled thinly, looking out across the lawn. She was already mentally crossing names off guest lists, revoking country club sponsorships, and freezing every shared social circle.

"Leave the Martinez family to me, darling," she said softly. "They will find New York very cold this winter."
