TANGLED IN THE TYRANT'S TRAP Chapter 1

Thunder slammed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, echoing the mess in my chest. Midnight. All of New York blurred into neon streaks and rain pretty, sure, but I didn't have time to care. I was on my knees behind a huge mahogany desk, fingers fumbling so badly I almost couldn't get my backpack open.

Come on, Clara, just get the ledger and get out, I kept repeating in my head.

Julian's life was hanging by a thread somewhere inside the locked-down database of Vance Enterprises. My little brother well, not so little, but he's always been reckless had screwed up royally two days ago. A junior accountant, of all things, getting tangled in a financial mess he barely understood. He panicked and lost a critical encryption key, causing millions to vanish in the company's systems. Sebastian Vance, the ice-cold CEO, didn't lose sleep over accidents. For him, a problem was just a liability to crush.

If I didn't find proof Julian'd been set up, he was looking at ten years behind bars, no questions asked.

I dug out a black flash drive from my pocket and shoved it into the computer tower. A soft blue glow from the monitor splashed across the room, painting weird, shifting shadows. Progress bar creeping forward. Downloading Secure Files... 14%.

"Faster, come on, faster," I hissed, clutching my knees, desperately trying to get my shaking under control. Every tick of the clock felt like I was testing a loaded gun one twist, everything explodes. Sebastian Vance they called him the Tyrant of Wall Street for a reason. He tore people apart. Brilliant, sure. Heartless, absolutely.

45%... 68%... 89%...

And then-click. A heavy, deliberate sound sliced through the storm: the office door unlocking.

Ice shot up my spine. I stopped breathing, frozen solid. The flash drive was still in the computer. I couldn't move, couldn't yank it free. Then came footsteps. Slow. Sure. Far too expensive to belong to anyone nice. Every footfall brought a rush of rain, the scent of leather, expensive cologne cedarwood, sharp and suffocating.

Suddenly, the room snapped alive as the chandelier came on, harsh white light burning straight through the shadows. I squeezed my eyes shut and pressed myself flat under the desk, willing myself invisible.

"You can come out now," someone said. Deep voice, smooth as glass, dripping authority. "The desk won't hide you, little thief."

Well, that was that. I forced myself to stand, gripping the desk so hard the wood bit into my palm. I looked up and yeah, there he was. Sebastian Vance, in the flesh, staring back with eyes like a lightning storm.

He looked unfair it wasn't just money; the man was genetically engineered for intimidation. Six-foot-three, lean but solid, dark hair wet from the rain, suit jacket gone. White dress shirt, sleeves rolled, veins and muscle on show. His face razor sharp lines and a jaw you could cut yourself on. And in his hand, carelessly spinning: a slim, silver encryption key. The key.

"Looking for this?" His lips pulled into a smirk, almost lazy. He caught my stutter like it amused him. "M-Mr. Vance," I managed. "I can explain. I wasn't"

He cut me off. "Save it, Clara." He circled the desk, each step slow and deliberate, and I honestly wanted to run, but my back met the credenza and there was nowhere left.

He stopped just inches away. Heat rolled off him

real, not metaphorical and I flinched as his hand grabbed my wrist, firm and unyielding. My backpack thudded to the floor. His grip burned, and his eyes traced my expression, reading every word I didn't say.

"Your brother's not a thief," he said quietly. "I knew someone was coming the moment you broke through security." His gaze lingered on my lips, his tone dropping lower. "I've been waiting for you."

I swallowed hard. "If you know Julian didn't do it, let him go!" I yanked at my arm, but his hold only tightened, pulling me closer until I felt the steady beat of his calm heart. His composure was infuriating.

"No. Business doesn't work that way, Clara." His other hand trailed down my neck so slow it turned my nerves to static. "Your brother's mistake cost me ten million dollars. That debt gets paid, one way or another. He's got nothing. So it's your turn."

"Me?" My throat burned. "I don't have ten million dollars! Take my life if you have to, just let Julian go!"

"I don't want your life," he whispered. His thumb pressed against my pulse. He watched me fall apart with clinical interest. "I want your face."

"What?"

He almost smiled almost. "The board is threatening to kick me out. They think I'm too ruthless. They want stability an engagement. Tomorrow morning. You're quiet, spotless record, no messy connections-"

"You're insane," I muttered. "Fake an engagement? Never."

He laughed, low and cold, and reached into his pocket for his phone. 9-1-1 lit up the screen. His thumb hovered, ready. "If you walk out, I dial. Julian goes to prison. Or you sign the papers, move in tonight, and put on a show for the world."

For a moment, all I saw was blurred light on the phone screen. I looked up, and his eyes-stone cold gave not a hint of mercy. I was trapped. Say no, lose Julian. Say yes, lose myself.

"I hate you." I spat the words out. They tasted sour.

Sebastian's smirk turned positively devilish. He tossed the phone on the desk, pressed a heavy gold pen into my hand, and wrapped his own over mine, guiding it toward the legal contract waiting next to us. "Good. Hate makes things interesting. Sign, Clara."

My hand shook, but I pressed pen to paper. Just as the ink touched down, the double doors crashed open. A security guard stumbled in, white-faced and out of breath, clutching a tablet.

"Mr. Vance there's a problem. The press just leaked a live video. Someone knows she's in here."
