Chapter 2

The pancakes had gone stiff overnight. I was scraping them into the trash when I heard a key turn in the front door.

7:12 a.m.

Noah walked in wearing the same white shirt from yesterday. Pink glitter clung to his collar and sparkled on his sleeve, like a little girl had hugged him for a long time.

A curl of balloon ribbon slipped from his pocket and landed on the table. Right next to Benjamin's blue plate.

"You didn't come home," I said.

"It ran late. Ava fell asleep in the car, and Lily needed help carrying her in." He was already pulling out his phone, already smiling. "Here. Look."

He turned the screen toward me. Ava in a pink crown. Ava with frosting on her nose. Ava on his shoulders.

"Look how happy Ava is. She calls me her hero." He swiped again. "Her little princess face when the cake came out, Claire. First time she ever felt what a whole family is like."

I didn't look at the phone. I looked at the shelf behind him.

An ugly brown teddy bear sat there with one crooked eye. Four years ago, Noah's flight had been delayed on Benjamin's second birthday. He'd grabbed that bear at an airport gift shop at midnight and driven three hours home. He'd kissed our sleeping son on the forehead with snow still in his hair.

*A kid only gets one childhood,* he'd told me that night. *A father doesn't get to miss it.*

"You didn't ask," I said.

"Ask what?"

"How Benjamin's birthday went."

He blinked. He tucked the phone away.

"Your actual son waited for his hero until nine last night."

---

Noah went to the sink and filled a glass of water. He didn't answer.

So I opened Lily's page myself.

She'd posted the full video an hour ago. Four minutes and thirty seconds.

I watched Noah cut the cake. I watched him wipe frosting off Ava's fingers with a napkin. Then a photographer waved them together, and Noah stepped into the middle, one arm around Lily's waist, the other holding Ava.

"Closer," the photographer called. "Big smiles!"

Lily's voice floated over the music. "Ava finally gets the family birthday she deserves."

At the end, Ava kissed Noah's cheek.

"Perfect family!" the photographer shouted.

I paused the video. I zoomed in on the cake.

At the base, half-buried in pink frosting, was a silver star. Benjamin had pressed that one on himself at the bakery. He'd made the lady put it right in front so it would face him.

"They missed one," I said quietly.

"What?"

"They scraped off his name. They forgot his star."

Noah set the glass down. "Don't do this."

I kept scrolling. Back. Further back.

April 9th. Lily and Ava at a dance recital. In the corner of the photo, a man's hand holding a bouquet. A silver watch. Noah's watch.

April 9th was the night he called me from the office. *Client crisis. Don't wait up.*

May 2nd. A science fair. Noah in the background, wearing this exact white shirt.

May 2nd was Benjamin's MRI results.

March 17th. Pizza night with Lily and Ava. He was supposed to be at a conference in Denver.

I turned the phone toward him and held it there.

"How many of Benjamin's moments have you already given them?"

His face went pale, then red. "You're stalking her page now?"

"She made it public, Noah. She *wanted* me to see."

---

A soft creak came from the hallway.

Benjamin stood in the doorway, one hand gripping the frame. His cape was still on. It had gone wrinkled while he slept.

In his arms was the present in blue paper. The one we'd never opened.

"Daddy?"

Noah's shoulders dropped an inch. "Hey, champ."

Benjamin shuffled closer. Every step looked careful, like the floor was ice.

"Daddy, can you open just one present with me?"

Noah's watch lit up. Then it lit up again. He glanced at it.

"Not now, buddy. Lily and Ava have a photo shoot for a kids' clothing brand. I promised I'd drive them."

"Just ten minutes," Benjamin said. "I'm really fast at opening."

Noah took the present from his arms. For one second I thought he would sit down.

Instead he placed it on the table, next to the balloon ribbon.

"I have responsibilities. You're a big boy now. You need to learn that grown-ups have work."

Benjamin's hand stayed in the air. Then, slowly, his fingers curled. His thin wrist slid back inside his sleeve until only his fingertips showed.

He didn't say okay. He didn't say anything.

"He is your responsibility," I said.

Noah grabbed his keys. I moved between him and the door.

"Move, Claire."

"Ten minutes. He asked you for ten minutes."

"And this is exactly what you always do." His voice dropped low, so Benjamin wouldn't hear. It didn't work. "You make me the bad guy in front of him. Every single time."

"You don't need my help for that."

"He's sick. I get it. But you treat him like glass. A sick kid who gets everything he wants turns into a spoiled kid."

I stared at him. Then I laughed. A short, cold sound.

"He wanted a cake. You gave it away. He wanted his dad. You gave that away too. Tell me what he got, Noah."

His watch buzzed again. He stepped around me.

The door closed behind him.

---

I didn't chase him this time.

I picked up the blue present and carried it into Benjamin's room. He climbed onto his bed and sat cross-legged, waiting.

"You do the honors," I said.

He tore the paper in one long strip. Inside was a little silver spaceship with a round glass dome.

"It's a star lamp," I told him. "I ordered it a month ago. It shines the whole sky on your ceiling."

He turned it over and found the switch. Tiny stars bloomed across the walls, blue and white, slowly spinning.

His mouth fell open. "Whoa."

"You like it?"

"Can we keep it on all night?" He tipped his head back. "So when Daddy comes home late, he can see the stars too. Then he won't get lost."

I swallowed hard. "Sure, baby."

He reached under his pillow again and pulled out the yellow candle. The bent one from the pancakes.

"Mommy, can you save my candle until Daddy comes?"

"Of course, baby."

I found an empty clear box in his art drawer, the kind his crayons came in. He laid the candle inside like it was treasure.

"Then it still counts as my birthday, right?" he asked. "If we light it again later?"

I opened my mouth to say *you don't have to wait for him.* I brushed his hair back instead.

My hand stopped.

His forehead was hot. Not warm. Hot.

"Hey. Let me check something."

I grabbed the thermometer from his nightstand and slipped it under his tongue. He watched the stars while it beeped.

101.8.

The doctor's voice came back to me. *Anything over 101, you call us. Don't wait.*

I dialed the number on his hospital card. A nurse picked up on the second ring.

"This is Claire, Benjamin's mom. He's running 101.8."

"Any chills? Vomiting? Is he breathing okay?"

"He's breathing. He's tired. He's quiet."

"With his history, we need to see him now. Bring him straight to the ER entrance. We'll call ahead."

"We're coming."

I hung up and snatched the hospital card off the nightstand. I reached for the thermometer to check one more time.

Small fingers clamped onto my sleeve. Harder than I'd ever felt him grip anything.

Benjamin was staring across the room. At the little wooden chair in the corner. The one he'd pulled up next to his bed last week and called *Daddy's spot.*

His lips barely moved.

"Mommy, I don't feel very good."
