Chapter 3

By Sunday afternoon, Benjamin was back in the white bed on the fourth floor.

A clear oxygen tube curved under his nose. The nurses hung a bag for the fever and another for the pain. Every breath he took sounded like it had to climb a hill first.

Dr. Raman pulled me into the doorway. She was the only person besides my mother who still called me Ellie. We'd roomed together in college, long before she became my son's doctor.

"Ellie, his lungs are filling faster than we hoped. His numbers are dropping."

"How fast?"

She didn't blink. "Call his father."

I sat down beside the bed and took Benjamin's hand. Around his wrist was the elastic star bracelet he'd worn on his birthday. Three of the plastic stars had cracked.

Down the hall, a family laughed over a balloon delivery. Someone was going home today.

Three years ago, during Benjamin's first stay here, Noah never left that vinyl chair. He'd taped paper stars across the whole window so our boy would wake up to a sky.

I dialed.

It rang out.

I dialed again. Voicemail.

"Noah, Benjamin is getting worse. Please come to the hospital. This isn't about us anymore."

I hung up. Dialed again. And again.

The call log filled with red.

---

On the ninth try, he picked up.

"Claire, I'm in the middle of something."

Behind him, a camera shutter fired. *Click-click-click.*

"Chin up, sweetie! Daddy, lean in a little!"

Then Lily's voice, close to the phone. "Noah, you're blocking the light. Watch the lens."

"Benjamin's back in the hospital," I said. "Dr. Raman says it's very bad. She wants you here now."

A pause. Then a long breath out.

"Is this about the birthday? Are you still mad?"

My grip squeezed the phone until the case creaked. "His oxygen is dropping, Noah."

"You said the same thing in March. And in May. I can't drop everything—" He stopped, corrected himself. "I'm not going to drop my whole life every time you panic."

Dr. Raman stood in the doorway, arms folded, watching me.

"Then talk to his doctor. She's right here. Let her tell you."

"I don't need to talk to anyone. He's in a hospital, Claire. He's surrounded by people."

"He's surrounded by strangers."

"Benjamin has doctors around him. Ava doesn't have a father to show up for her."

I closed my eyes.

"Benjamin has a father. I'm asking where he is."

The shutter clicked again. He hung up.

Ten seconds later, my phone buzzed. A message from Lily.

A photo. Noah holding Ava's hand under a giant amusement park sign, both of them wearing mouse ears.

*Ava still needs her special weekend. Hope you understand, Claire!*

She'd added a pink heart.

---

Around seven, Benjamin's eyes drifted open. They were glassy and too bright.

"Mommy?" His voice was barely there. "Is Daddy on the way?"

I'd told him *soon* a hundred times. *Tomorrow.* *After work.* *Next weekend.*

This time, the lie wouldn't come.

"I'm going to call him one more time, okay?"

He nodded against the damp pillow.

I dialed. Noah answered on the fourth ring, sharp and impatient.

"Claire, I told you—"

I pressed speaker and held the phone near Benjamin's face.

"Daddy?"

Silence on the line. Then Noah's voice changed. Softer.

"Hey, champ."

On the nightstand, the little silver spaceship turned slowly. Blue stars drifted over the ceiling and across Benjamin's cheeks.

"Daddy, I still have your birthday present." Each word took effort. "And Mommy saved my candle. So we can do it again."

I watched his chest rise. Fall. Rise.

Noah cleared his throat. "That's great, buddy. Listen, as soon as we wrap up here, I'll come straight over. And I'll bring you a bigger cake. The biggest one they have."

"With stars?"

"All the stars you want. I promise I'll come soon, champ."

"Noah," I said, "don't make another promise you won't keep."

Before he could answer, Lily's voice cut in. "Noah? Ava's waiting for her picture with you. They're losing the sunset."

"I have to go. Love you, buddy."

The line went dead.

Benjamin stared at the black screen for a long moment.

Then he smiled. A small, brave, crooked smile. The kind you give someone so they won't feel bad.

He shut his eyes.

I sat there with the dead phone in my hand. Every *soon* I'd ever told him was stacked up in that smile.

No more. Not one more.

---

Near midnight, I opened his favorite comic. Captain Comet, issue twelve, the one where the hero holds up a falling bridge.

"'Nobody's coming,' said the villain. And Captain Comet said—"

"'Then I'll hold it myself,'" Benjamin whispered.

"You remember."

"It's the best part."

Two nurses moved around the bed, adjusting the oxygen, checking lines. A red light on the monitor kept blinking. Dr. Raman hadn't gone home.

I took the clear crayon box off the nightstand. The bent birthday candle rolled inside it.

I slid open the drawer and laid it there. Then I closed it.

He wasn't going to wait for anyone anymore. Not because of a candle.

Benjamin's fingers found mine.

"Mommy?"

"I'm here."

"Is Daddy disappointed in me?" His eyes searched my face. "Because I didn't get better?"

My whole body went still.

I lowered my forehead onto the back of his small hand. His skin smelled like hospital soap and baby shampoo.

"You listen to me. You are the bravest little boy in the whole world. Braver than Captain Comet. Braver than anybody."

He was quiet. His thumb moved once over my knuckle.

"Mommy, if I fall asleep, will Daddy still come?"

I lifted my head.

"I'm right here, sweetheart. I'm not going anywhere. Whatever happens, I'm—"

The monitor screamed.

Fast, shrill beeps. The red light stopped blinking and burned steady.

"Page respiratory!" a nurse shouted.

Dr. Raman was at the bed in two strides. Hands everywhere. Someone pulled the blanket down. Someone pushed the comic off the mattress and it slapped the floor, open to the bridge.

"Benjamin? Baby, look at Mommy—"

His fingers loosened. One. Then another.

I tightened my grip. They kept slipping, like sand.

"Ellie." Dr. Raman's voice was low and steady. "Ellie, I need you to look at me."

I didn't. I couldn't stop looking at him.

She put her hand on my shoulder and eased me back, gently, one step from the bed.

The star lamp kept spinning. Blue light slid across his blanket.

The blanket didn't move.

It didn't rise. It didn't fall.

The beeping stretched into one long, piercing tone that filled the whole room and wouldn't stop.

I was still holding his hand.

Somewhere far away, I heard her say my name.

"Ellie, I'm so sorry."
