Chapter 3

"Thirty days," I repeated. The words tasted like ash. "You sat on this for a month?"

"I gathered evidence," Julian corrected.

He didn't look at the scattered pictures. He looked directly at me.

"Accusations without proof just lead to better hiding spots," he added.

"She was picking out my floral arrangements last Tuesday!" I shoved a glossy photo off the mattress. It fluttered to the floor. "He was complaining about the catering budget to my face!"

"People lie, Mia. Pictures don't."

"Why didn't you show me immediately?"

"Because you would have confronted him without leverage." Julian stepped closer. "You would have screamed. He would have denied it. And she would have played the victim—your best friend, sobbing, swearing it meant nothing, begging you to understand. You would have forgiven her by Friday."

I glared at him. The worst part was that he was right, and we both knew it.

"I don't play games I lose," Julian stated.

"This isn't a game."

"It is now."

I shook my head. A bitter laugh escaped my throat.

"I refuse to do this. I am going next door. I am going to kick that door off its hinges and let them both see exactly what they look like."

I pivoted toward the exit.

Julian caught my elbow. His grip felt entirely unyielding.

"Release me," I ordered.

"You are acting on impulse," he warned.

"He is my fiancé!"

"And she is my wife." Julian pulled me back a single step. "Sit down."

"Do not give me orders."

I yanked my arm.

Before I could break free, three loud thuds shook the heavy mahogany door.

We both froze.

"Room service?" I whispered.

Julian shook his head. He released my arm and held up a single finger.

A muffled curse drifted from the hallway.

"Come on," a familiar voice groaned. "Are you kidding me?"

David.

My blood turned to ice.

David knocked again. "Hey! Anyone in there? The ice machine is completely dead. I just need a cup."

He was right outside. A thin piece of wood separated my cheating fiancé from the two people he was destroying.

Panic seized my chest. I opened my mouth to speak. To yell. I didn't even know what I wanted to do.

Julian didn't wait to find out.

He grabbed my waist and hauled me into the narrow entryway.

I stumbled, my shoulder hitting the wall.

Julian stepped into my space. He pressed me flat against the wallpaper right beside the peephole.

He caged me in, planting a hand flat on the wall on either side of my head.

Total darkness consumed the tiny alcove.

I tried to twist away.

Julian shifted his weight forward, pinning me flush against the wall with his own body.

"Shh," he breathed into my hair.

David pounded on the door again.

The vibration traveled through the wood and straight into my spine.

"Man, open up. I know you're in there. I hear the TV."

I started hyperventilating. Short, ragged gasps tore through my throat.

If David heard me. If he knew I stood three inches away.

Julian's chest pressed firmly against mine. The rough wool of his charcoal suit dragged across my bare arms.

The friction sparked a sharp, shocking heat over my skin.

I struggled to get enough oxygen. The walls felt like they were collapsing inward.

Julian lowered his head. His jaw brushed my temple.

He inhaled deeply through his nose, then exhaled slowly through his mouth.

He repeated the motion. Exaggerated. Steady.

I stared up into the black void. I focused on the rise and fall of his chest.

My frantic gasps fought against his controlled rhythm.

He leaned a fraction closer.

The scent of Tom Ford cologne—spicy, rich, and sharp—flooded my senses. It masked the stale hotel air completely.

Inhale. Exhale.

My lungs finally stopped burning. My breathing synchronized with his.

We stood locked together in the pitch black, three inches from the man I had planned to marry.

Outside, David sighed loudly.

"Forget it."

Heavy footsteps shuffled away from our door. They faded down the carpeted hallway. A door clicked shut next door.

Silence stretched between us.

Julian maintained his hold. He kept me pinned in the dark, his body a heavy shield against the reality outside.

Then he stepped back.

The sudden absence of his heat hit me like a physical strike. Where the wool suit had chafed my arms, the cool air conditioning rushed in. My skin burned cold.

I shivered, wrapping my arms around my stomach.

Julian crossed to the nightstand and switched off the small lamp. The room plunged into shadows.

"He's gone," Julian stated.

He adjusted his cuffs. The gold links caught the faint light from the window.

I slumped against the wall. My legs felt hollow.

"I refuse to go back to my apartment," I whispered.

"You have to."

"I will vomit the second I look at him."

"You will look at him," Julian instructed. His tone stripped away any room for argument. "You will smile. You will ask him how his late night at the firm went."

"I am not a good liar."

"Learn fast."

Julian picked up the manila folder and shoved the photos back inside.

"If you confront him now, they panic. They hide assets. They spin the narrative."

He walked toward me and held out the folder.

"Take this. Hide it."

I took the envelope. The weight of it felt wrong in my hands—too heavy for paper.

"Tomorrow, we start dismantling their lives," he said. "Tonight, you sleep next to him."

I stared at the folder. The toxic weight of it seemed to climb up my arms.

"What are you going to do?" I asked.

"I am going to pick up my wife from her girls' night out," Julian replied. His eyes offered zero warmth. "Go home, Mia."

Two hours later, I pushed my key into the lock of the apartment David and I shared.

The deadbolt clicked. It sounded like a gunshot in the silent hallway.

The living room sat in pitch darkness. David's leather briefcase waited by the console table. His keys rested in the ceramic bowl. A perfectly normal scene. A perfectly normal lie.

I kicked off my flats and carried the manila folder into the guest bedroom, shoving it deep under the mattress.

Then I walked into the master bedroom.

David lay sprawled across the king-sized bed in his grey sweatpants, his chest rising and falling in deep, rhythmic sleep—the sleep of a man with absolutely nothing to fear.

I changed into an oversized t-shirt in the dark. Every motion felt robotic. I pulled back the duvet and slid under the covers.

David grunted. He rolled over, tossed a heavy arm across my waist, and pulled me backward until my spine hit his chest. He buried his face in my neck.

"You're freezing," he mumbled, voice thick with sleep.

I froze. My muscles locked tight.

I did not push him away. I did not scream.

Instead, I turned my head slightly toward his collarbone—and the scent hit me instantly.

Sweet. Artificial. Unmistakable.

Chloe's vanilla perfume clung to his skin, woven through the fabric of his shirt like it had been pressed there for hours.

He tightened his grip on my waist.

"Love you," he whispered into the dark.

My eyes stayed wide open, fixed on the blank wall, the silence of the room pressing down on my chest like a hand.

By morning, I had stopped being his fiancée.

I just hadn't told him yet—because the folder under the guest bed mattress wasn't the only thing I had hidden from David Lawson that night.

Tucked inside the lining of my coat, where Julian had slipped it without a word as he walked me to the elevator, sat a second phone. Black. Cheap. Already charged.

A burner.

And on its blank home screen, a single contact had already been saved.
