Chapter 5

— ¿Realmente eres tan inocente?

The tires of Marcus's Bentley crunched over the gravel driveway as we pulled up to the Hamptons beach house. Gray clouds hung low over the Atlantic, mirroring the heaviness in my chest. This was supposed to be our belated honeymoon—a cruel joke that only Marcus found amusing. I stepped out of the car, clutching my leather sketchbook to my chest like armor. The wind whipped my hair across my face as I gazed up at the glass and cedar mansion. Once, I might have found it beautiful. "Isabella." Marcus's voice cut through the air, not bothering to look at me as he strode toward the entrance. "Don't dawdle." I followed him inside, my fingers automatically finding my wrist, tracing the delicate veins beneath my skin—a nervous habit I'd developed since my hemophilia diagnosis. One cut, one bruise in the wrong place, and I could bleed for hours. Marcus knew this.

The fluorescent lights in the boardroom cast harsh shadows across the mahogany table as I clicked to the final slide of my presentation. Fifteen faces stared back at me—board members, department heads, and Bradley seated at the head of the table with that familiar smile that once made my heart skip but now felt like a mask. "And that concludes our proposal for the new cardiac wing," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "With the combined sponsorship commitments from MedTech Solutions, CardioVascular Innovations, and Apex Medical Systems, we've secured fifteen million dollars in funding—five million more than our initial target." A murmur of approval rippled through the room. Dr. Harrison, the chief of internal medicine, leaned forward with raised eyebrows. "Fifteen million? That's... exceptional work, Dr. Carroll." I allowed myself a small smile, my fingers unconsciously touching the portfolio that contained months of research, late-night calls, and carefully crafted proposals.

The mountain air should have been refreshing. Instead, it felt like a thin veil between me and the growing hollowness inside my chest. I stood at the edge of the circle, clipboard in hand, watching as my colleagues laughed and stumbled around blindfolded during the company's pre-IPO retreat icebreaker. "Next up for our blindfolded mentor pick," announced David Lee, our perpetually nervous HR Director, "is Chloe Reed!" Chloe stepped forward with practiced modesty, her silk blouse catching the late afternoon light as she tied the blindfold over her perfectly styled hair. I knew what was coming. We all did. "Remember, just tap the shoulder of whoever you'd like as your mentor for the next quarter," David instructed, his voice carrying across the clearing. I watched as Chloe's manicured hand reached out, her steps deliberate despite her supposed blindness. She wandered through the circle, passing by three senior executives before her hand "accidentally" landed on my husband's shoulder. "Oh!" she exclaimed with theatrical surprise, removing her blindfold.
