Chapter 2

The lock turned at 1:14 a.m.

I knew the exact time because I'd been sitting at the kitchen island watching the microwave clock for almost an hour. Not waiting for him, exactly. Just making sure I was awake when he walked in.

Mason came through the door loosening his tie with one hand. In the other, he held a small white gift bag tied with gold ribbon. Through the tissue paper, I could see a tiny glass bottle and a card printed in looping script. *Sienna & Leo. Forever starts tonight.*

A party favor. He'd carried it all the way home.

He dropped his keys in the bowl by the door and glanced at the dining table. For six months, that table had been buried under seating charts, fabric swatches, and a binder Dana had color-coded within an inch of its life. Now it was bare except for a single coaster.

He sighed, the patient sigh he used on difficult clients.

"Okay," he said. "I can see you're upset."

I didn't answer.

He set the gift bag on the counter, right next to my elbow, and opened the fridge. "Look, I'm sorry about the fitting. I'll call the boutique Monday and we'll rebook for next week. I'll take the whole afternoon off. Happy?"

"You think this is about the fitting."

"I think it's about Sienna. It's always about Sienna." He cracked open a bottle of water and leaned against the counter. "And honestly, Ev, tonight was not the night. It was her engagement party. You know how hard this year's been for her. Every time I had to check my phone, she could tell something was off, and it put her in a weird mood. You didn't text back once. I spent half the night wondering if you were going to make a thing out of it."

"So I made it hard for you."

"You made it awkward." He rubbed the back of his neck. "It's one night. She's only getting engaged once."

I looked at the gift bag. At the gold ribbon he'd kept perfectly tied.

I'd planned a lot of things to say while I sat there in the dark. I'd thought about the necklace, about the way she'd rested her head on his shoulder, about every canceled dinner I'd explained away to his mother. But looking at him now, none of that mattered. I only needed one answer.

"Can I ask you something?"

He tipped the water bottle toward me. "Sure."

"After we're married, if Sienna calls you at three in the morning and asks you to come over, will you go?"

He laughed a little, like I'd made a joke. When I didn't laugh with him, it faded.

"Seriously? You watched the stream."

"Tess at the boutique had it on. Yes, I watched it."

"Ev, that was a party. People were drinking. She was being dramatic, and I wasn't going to embarrass her in front of a hundred people."

"That's not what I asked."

The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere down the hall, a neighbor's door clicked shut.

He took longer to answer than I expected. Four seconds. Maybe five. Long enough that I watched him decide whether to lie, and long enough to watch him decide he didn't need to.

"I've known Sienna since I was fourteen," he said. "She was there when my dad got sick. She was there when I flunked out of my first semester. I'm not going to delete someone from my life because I'm getting married. That's not who I am, and I don't think it's who you'd want me to be."

"So you'd go."

"If she actually needed me? Yes." He set the water down and came around the island, softening his voice. He reached for my hands. "But that doesn't change anything between us. You're the one I'm marrying, Evelyn. Isn't that enough?"

His thumbs moved over my knuckles, slow and warm. A year ago, that would have worked. A month ago, it probably would have too.

Now I finally heard what he was actually saying.

I'd be the one who sent his parents Christmas cards and remembered his cousin's birthday. I'd be the one at the dinner table when the phone lit up at midnight, the one who'd smile and say, *Go, it's fine.* I'd sign the mortgage. I'd carry the kids. I'd follow every rule a wife was supposed to follow.

And Sienna would stay exactly where she'd always been. Above all of it. Untouchable.

He wasn't choosing me. He was assigning me a role.

I pulled my hands out of his.

"No," I said. "It's not enough."

He frowned. "What does that mean?"

The ring was a little tight. My fingers were cold, and I had to twist it twice to get it past the knuckle. Mason watched me do it like he didn't understand what he was seeing.

I set it on the counter beside Sienna's gift bag. The diamond caught the light from the range hood.

"The wedding's canceled," I said.

"Evelyn."

"I called Dana from the boutique. She's already contacted the venue and the caterer. The florist. The band. The guest list went out with a notice two hours ago, so your mom probably has an email waiting for her in the morning." I kept my voice even. "You canceled on me three times, Mason. I only canceled once."

For a second, he just stared at me. Color climbed up his throat. He looked at the ring, then at the empty dining table, then back at my face.

Then he laughed.

It wasn't a nervous laugh. It was relieved, almost fond, the way he'd smiled at Sienna on that rooftop.

"Wow. Okay." He picked up his water again and shook his head. "You really went for it this time."

"I'm not doing this to get a reaction."

"Sure you're not." He took a long drink. "You want me to say I messed up tonight? Fine. I messed up. You want me to grovel to Dana and pay whatever deposit we lose? Fine. But don't stand here and pretend you're walking away from six years over a livestream."

"It's not about the livestream."

"Then what's it about?"

"It's about your answer."

He rolled his eyes and turned back to the fridge. "Cancel whatever you want. You'll put it back tomorrow."

He didn't even look at me when he said it. That was the part that finally made my chest ache, more than anything he'd said all night. He was that sure of me.

I slid off the stool and walked to the hall closet.

My suitcase was already inside, zipped and standing upright. I'd packed it at eleven while he was still on that rooftop. Clothes, laptop, my grandmother's earrings, the folder with my passport and my birth certificate. Six years of living together, and it had taken me forty minutes.

When I wheeled it into the living room, the sound of the wheels on the hardwood made him turn around.

His smile slipped. "Where are you going?"

"Somewhere else."

"It's one in the morning."

"I know what time it is."

"Ev, come on. This is ridiculous." He followed me toward the door but stopped a few feet short, like closing that distance would mean admitting this was real. "You're going to sleep on someone's couch to prove a point? Fine. Call me when you calm down."

I opened the door. The hallway light was harsh and yellow.

"Goodbye, Mason."

I didn't wait to hear whether he said anything back.

The parking garage was nearly empty. I loaded the suitcase into my trunk, got behind the wheel, and sat there with the engine off and both hands on the steering wheel.

Then I scrolled through my contacts, past Dana, past Mason, past his mother, all the way down to a name I hadn't called first in six years.

My father answered on the third ring. His voice was rough with sleep but instantly alert, the way it had always been when I was a kid and the phone rang late.

"Evelyn? What's wrong?"

Six years ago, I'd walked out of his house and told him I didn't need his money, his connections, or his plans for my life. I'd meant every word. I'd never once asked him for anything since.

I swallowed hard and stared through the windshield at the gray concrete wall.

"Dad," I said. "The Adrian Bennett thing. Does it still stand?"

There was a long silence on the line. I heard him sit up, heard the rustle of sheets.

When he spoke again, there was no surprise in his voice. Only something steady and certain, like he'd been waiting years for this call.

"Only if you say yes."
