Chapter 2

The first sliver of morning light cut through the blinds, a blade of white against Helena's eyelids. She woke with a gasp, body aching, throat raw. A dull throb pulsed behind her eyes.

The space beside her was already cold. He never stayed. From the first night of their marriage, Gaston Vaughn had made it excruciatingly clear that his presence in her bed was a transaction, not an intimacy.

She reached for the water glass on the nightstand, movements slow and stiff. Her fingers were just about to close around it when the bathroom door swung open.

Gaston stood there, already dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, tie knotted with precision. Hair damp from the shower, a single drop of water tracing down his temple. The morning light caught the sharp angles of his face—the cheekbones, the cruel, beautiful mouth, the eyes that held all the warmth of a frozen lake.

He was the most beautiful man she had ever seen. And the most terrifying.

Because she remembered what he looked like when he smiled. She had seen it once, a lifetime ago, in a rainstorm on a college campus. That smile had felt like the sun coming out. Now she wondered if that boy had ever existed at all.

He watched her hand, his expression tightening with suspicion.

Just as her fingertips brushed the glass, he moved.

Two long strides and his hand connected with the tumbler in a blur of motion. It hit the carpet with a muffled thud, a jagged shard breaking away as water soaked into the wool.

Helena flinched back with a cry. A sliver of glass had sliced a thin, red line across her hand.

Gaston stood over her, chest heaving, breath coming in harsh, ragged bursts. For one unguarded moment, he looked less like an ice-cold CEO and more like a man on the edge of something he couldn't control.

"What did you put in it this time?" he snarled. "Something to make the performance more convincing? Nothing traceable, right?"

The memory of three years ago—of him waking up disoriented and drugged in a hotel room with her—was the ghost that haunted every interaction. The foundation of his hatred.

And she couldn't even blame him. The setup had been perfect. Someone had gone to great lengths to make it look like she'd trapped him. Someone who had been in that hotel that night.

I'm back.

The text message burned in her mind. Was this connected? Had the same person who tried to kill her just announced their return?

"It was water, Gaston. Just ice water."

She tried to push herself up, but her body was dead weight. Dizziness washed over her, and she fell back against the pillows.

A cruel smile twisted his lips. "Right. The frail, wronged wife. Very convincing."

But his eyes dropped to the blood on her hand, and for a fraction of a second, something flickered there. Something that looked almost like regret. Then it was gone.

That was it. The final thread snapped.

But she didn't break the way he expected. Something inside her went very still. The light in her eyes didn't die—it hardened into something colder and sharper than his contempt could ever reach.

She took a shuddering breath. When she spoke, her voice was raw but steady.

"Let's get a divorce."

The words sucked all the oxygen from the room.

Gaston froze mid-motion, adjusting his tie. Slowly, he turned. His eyes narrowed. For the first time in years, he looked genuinely caught off guard.

"What did you say?"

"I want a divorce." Her voice steadier now. Eerily calm.

A sharp bark of laughter—no humor in it, only contempt, and something else. Something that sounded, against all logic, like fear.

He stalked back to the bed, his presence overwhelming. He gripped her shoulders, fingers digging into sore muscles. But his grip wasn't violent. It was desperate. A man holding onto something he wasn't ready to lose.

"You think this is a negotiation? The prenup is ironclad, Helena. You walk away with nothing." He tightened his grip. "Or is this the real play? You found a new mark? Some other bastard with a bigger bank account?"

There it was. Beneath the contempt, beneath the ice—jealousy. Raw, irrational, carefully hidden. He wasn't just angry. He was terrified she might actually leave.

The realization should have given her hope. It just made her tired.

"I don't want anything. Keep it all. I'll sign whatever you want. I just want out."

He didn't believe her. She could see it in his eyes. To him, a world without financial motivation was an alien concept.

But there was something else in his expression now. A crack in the armor. A flicker of the boy in the rain.

"You're not going anywhere." His voice dropped. Lower. Rougher. As if the words were being dragged out of him against his will.

"You're not going anywhere," he repeated, and the second time, it didn't sound like a command.

It sounded like a plea.

He released her—not with a shove, but a deliberate, controlled movement. Straightened his jacket. The mask sliding back into place.

"Matilda wants an heir. Until you've fulfilled your contract, you are Mrs. Gaston Vaughn. You will stay right where I want you."

He strode out without a backward glance.

But at the door, he paused. Just a heartbeat. His hand on the frame, his back to her.

She held her breath.

And then he was gone.

The door slammed. The sound vibrated through her bones.

Helena's tears came—hot, silent, streaming down her temples into the silk pillowcase.

But they weren't tears of defeat. They were tears of clarity. Of the terrible, liberating understanding that she had finally said the words out loud. And that somewhere beneath his ice, they had landed.

He hadn't said yes. But he hadn't said no, either.

For the first time in three years, she had seen him hesitate.

She dragged her aching body out of bed, stepping around the broken glass. Her reflection in the mirror was a stranger—pale, haunted, hollow-eyed. But beneath the exhaustion, there was something new. A spark. The flicker of a woman who had finally, after years of drowning, decided to fight for air.

She held her bleeding hand under the cold stream of the faucet. The sting was grounding—a reminder she was still real. Still here.

Her gaze fell on the prenatal vitamins on the marble countertop. A dark thought slithered through her mind. A way out. An end to the pain.

She squeezed her eyes shut.

Then opened them.

With a sudden, violent motion, she swept the bottle into the silver wastebasket. She would not give them that. She would not let them break her.

She would find a way out. She would uncover who sent that text. She would learn the truth about what happened three years ago.

And when she did, Gaston Vaughn would understand exactly what kind of woman he had spent three years underestimating.

Her knuckles went white on the edge of the sink as she wept—not the silent sobs of a broken woman, but the fierce, defiant tears of someone who had just decided to survive.
