Chapter 3

The rain began in the late afternoon, a dreary, persistent drizzle that turned the Manhattan sky to slate. Helena sat alone in the cavernous living room of the Upper East Side townhouse, watching the water trace jagged paths down the floor-to-ceiling windows. The house was silent, a tomb furnished by a top-tier designer.

The chime of the doorbell was a jarring intrusion.

She padded to the door, her bare feet cold against the marble floor. Peering through the peephole, she saw Caleb, Gaston's executive assistant, standing on the stoop, a large black umbrella shielding him from the rain.

She opened the door.

"Mrs. Vaughn," he said, his expression a mixture of professional deference and personal discomfort. He collapsed his umbrella, shaking the water from it onto the doormat. He held out a small, white paper bag from a pharmacy.

Helena took it, her brow furrowed in confusion. The bag was surprisingly light.

She looked inside.

A small, rectangular box. Plan B.

The world tilted on its axis. A roaring sound filled her ears, drowning out the gentle patter of the rain. Her mind went completely blank.

"Mr. Vaughn's instructions," Caleb said, his voice low, his gaze fixed somewhere over her shoulder. "He said... just in case."

Just in case.

Last night, Matilda's decree, delivered by her stoic foot soldier: Tonight is optimal for conception.

Today, Gaston's counter-decree, delivered by his embarrassed assistant: Prevent it at all costs.

It wasn't just a contradiction; it was a declaration of war. A war fought on the battlefield of her body. It was the most profound humiliation she had ever endured. He didn't just not want her; he actively wanted to erase any trace of their forced union.

Her fingers tightened on the small box, the cardboard corners digging into her palm. She could feel Caleb's pitying gaze on her and straightened her spine, a reflexive act of pride.

She looked him directly in the eye, her own expression unreadable. With deliberate, steady movements, she tore open the paper bag, ripped the seal on the box, and pushed one small, white pill from its foil packet.

Without a glass of water, without breaking eye contact with the mortified assistant, she tossed the pill to the back of her throat and swallowed.

The dry, bitter pill scraped its way down, a painful, physical manifestation of her life.

Caleb visibly flinched. He let out a soft sigh, a sound of resignation and perhaps a sliver of sympathy. "My apologies, Mrs. Vaughn." He turned, opened his umbrella, and walked back into the rain, leaving her alone in the doorway.

She closed the door, the lock clicking into place with a sound of finality. Her back slid down the smooth wood paneling until she was crumpled on the floor.

A low, cramping pain began to build in her stomach, a protest against the pill she'd forced into it. The pain was a dull, insistent throb, and with it came the memories.

Her mind, a traitor, whisked her back four years, to a rainy day on the Harvard campus. She'd been a scholarship student, stranded under the awning of the Widener Library, shivering in a thin cardigan, having forgotten her umbrella.

Gaston, then a legend at the Business School, had appeared out of the downpour. He hadn't said a word. He'd simply shrugged off his expensive wool coat, draped it over her trembling shoulders, and held his own black umbrella over her head as he walked her back to her dorm.

The coat had smelled of cedarwood, old paper, and coffee. For a brief, shining moment, that scent had been the smell of hope. Of kindness. Of a future she'd foolishly allowed herself to dream of.

A violent cramp in her stomach yanked her back to the present. The memory, once a source of secret warmth, now felt like a poisoned barb. The kindness had been a mirage.

Her phone, which she'd left on the entryway table, lit up. A new message. From Gaston.

But her mind flashed back to the other message. The one from the unknown number at the gala. "I'm back." She'd been carrying those two words like a splinter under her skin since the night of the ballroom, a shadow she couldn't name, a threat she couldn't prove. Whoever had sent it was still out there, watching, waiting.

Now, staring at Gaston's name on the screen, a cold certainty settled into her bones. Whatever storm was coming—whether it wore the face of a ghost from her past or the husband who despised her—she would face it alone.

Her hands shook as she reached for the phone, crawling the last few feet on her hands and knees.

"Know your place. Don't ever think you can trap me with a child."

The words on the screen blurred, then sharpened with brutal clarity. They were a scalpel, expertly excising the last bit of sentimentality she held for that boy in the rain. That boy was gone. In his place was this monster.

A guttural sob tore from her throat, a sound of pure, animalistic pain. She drew her arm back and hurled the phone against the far wall. It hit with a sickening crack, the screen exploding into a spiderweb of fractured light before going dark.

The impact split the device cleanly along its seam. The screen flickered once—a dying pulse of white static—and then went black. The phone lay in pieces on the marble floor, a casualty of a war she hadn't started but would have to finish.

She curled into a ball on the cold floor, wrapping her arms around her cramping stomach, and wept. Not the silent, dignified tears of before, but ugly, wrenching sobs that shook her entire body.

Outside, a clap of thunder rattled the windows, masking the sound of a heart breaking.

After what felt like an eternity, the crying subsided, leaving her hollowed out and eerily calm. She pushed herself up, her limbs heavy and unresponsive. She walked unsteadily up the grand staircase to their bedroom—his bedroom.

She went to her dressing table, a piece of furniture she rarely used. She pulled open the top drawer, her movements robotic. Her fingers bypassed the neat rows of jewelry she never wore and reached for the one piece that mattered.

The Vaughn sapphire. The ring he had placed on her finger at the altar. It was heavy, cold, and magnificent—a symbol of her bondage.

She looked at it for a long moment, her expression blank. Then, with a flick of her wrist, she tossed it into the back of the drawer. It landed with a soft, muffled clink among forgotten trinkets.

She closed the drawer.

A switch had been flipped. The part of her that had hoped, that had hurt, that had loved, was now offline. A self-preservation protocol had been initiated. The emotional channel to Gaston Vaughn was now, and forever, closed.
