Chapter 3

For the private dinner, Roselyn picked out a black dress with a clean, elegant design. Just as she prepared to head out, her phone started ringing.

Roselyn, I owe you an apology. An inspection came up and delayed me. Stefan sounded rushed. "So I asked a friend to pick you up instead. He's already outside waiting."

A frown crossed Roselyn's face. "Stefan, that's unnecessary. I can make it there myself."

Relax, you'll be fine with him. I'll see you at the restaurant. Before she could respond, Stefan ended the call.

With her clutch in hand, Roselyn took the elevator down to the first floor.

At the curb, a black Maybach was already parked.

When she neared the vehicle, the driver got out and opened the rear door.

Roselyn stepped inside.

Someone else was already seated on the opposite side. The light from a tablet cast a glow across his features.

Sharp bone structure. A calm expression. An authority that didn't need to be announced.

His presence alone was difficult to ignore.

The man sitting there was Kevin Wheeler.

Roselyn stopped cold.

Kevin turned to look at her.

For a split second, something intense flickered across his face before disappearing.

The change vanished so quickly that she couldn't be certain she had seen it at all.

Hello, Roselyn greeted with a courteous smile.

My name is Roselyn Hudson. I'm Stefan's cousin. Thank you for coming to get me.

Kevin Wheeler. His voice was low and steady. "Stefan talks about you often. From what I understand, you've had a difficult time recently."

Roselyn immediately grew guarded. Without thinking, she closed her fingers into her palms. Why would Stefan tell him something so personal?

There are a few things in my life that need to be dealt with, she said after a pause.

Rather than questioning her further, Kevin offered, "If you find yourself needing assistance, you can reach out to me."

His tone remained casual, yet the offer felt far more significant than it should have.

Confusion flickered across Roselyn's face. She couldn't understand why someone she had only just met would extend that kind of offer.

Soon afterward, the Maybach rolled into the underground parking area of an upscale restaurant.

Kevin stepped out and opened the door for her.

Standing next to him made most people feel diminished by comparison. Roselyn rarely experienced anything like that.

Together, they made their way into a private dining room where Stefan was already seated and motioning for them to join him.

As the dinner continued, Roselyn began to understand the extent of Kevin's influence.

He wasn't simply a friend of Stefan's. He was one of the investment world's most influential figures, someone capable of shaping the future of countless companies with a single decision.

Even so, he spent most of the evening listening rather than speaking. Stefan carried much of the conversation with one story after another.

Several glasses of wine later, Stefan started talking about their family's past.

Roselyn's uncle, Arthur Cunningham, was a legend, Stefan said with a grin.

Arthur Cunningham? Kevin repeated. The way he said the name was noticeably quieter. "He is your uncle?"

A nod came from Roselyn as a familiar sadness surfaced inside her. "That's right. He passed away many years ago."

Kevin didn't look away.

Something about the way he watched her sent a sudden shock through Roselyn.

I owe him my life, Kevin said.

The amusement vanished from Stefan's face.

Roselyn became completely still.

Many years ago, he pulled me out of a situation that should have killed me, Kevin continued. His gaze remained fixed on her. "Afterward, he never asked for anything in return."

An old memory surfaced in Roselyn's mind. She remembered hearing that Arthur had once rescued a boy from a vehicle engulfed in flames.

He had been so happy because of that, but he had never revealed who that boy was.

Since then, I've never forgotten what I owe him, Kevin said. "Meeting you tonight finally gives me a chance to repay that debt."

Roselyn thought of the uncle who had always shown her kindness. Her throat tightened as emotion rose inside her. "That's not necessary. My uncle would've done the same for anyone. You don't owe me anything."

I disagree. I know exactly what I owe. Kevin's voice made it clear he wasn't open to debate. "If there's ever something you need, all you have to do is tell me."

Sensing the atmosphere growing heavier, Stefan cut in, "Roselyn, do you realize how valuable that offer is? Getting a favor from Kevin is like hitting the jackpot."

Roselyn turned her attention to Kevin. There was no trace of pity in his eyes. All she found there was sincerity.

She needed support now more than ever. Even so, she wanted to hold on to what remained of her pride.

Thank you, Kevin, Roselyn whispered. "If the day comes when I have nowhere else to turn, I'll remember what you've offered."

The corner of Kevin's mouth lifted slightly.

Once dinner ended, Kevin refused to let her find her own way home and arranged for the driver to take her back.

The ride passed in silence.

When the car finally arrived outside her apartment building, Roselyn stepped out onto the sidewalk.

Roselyn. Kevin's voice stopped her before she could walk away. "Don't forget what I said."

Roselyn caught her breath.

Before any response could leave her lips, the darkened window rose, and the Maybach disappeared into the night.

A cool breeze brushed against her coat while she remained standing on the sidewalk.

Her arms folded across her body as one thought after another ran through her mind.

There was no doubt that Kevin was a dangerous man. Yet after everything she had gone through, he was also the first person to offer her something completely genuine.
