Shattered Bond: The Rejected Luna Shines Now Chapter 1

Seraphina POV:

I woke up to the feeling of being torn apart.

The pain was a physical thing, a thousand invisible hooks pulling my soul from my body. It had been four days since the rejection, and the agony wasn't fading. It was getting worse.

The other side of the bed was empty. Cold. It felt like no one had slept there for centuries. My husband, Harlan Kensington, the Alpha of the Blackwood Pack, hadn't come home for four nights.

A violent cramp seized my stomach, and I curled into a ball. Cold sweat soaked through my silk nightgown. My inner wolf whimpered in my mind, a pathetic, wounded sound.

Instinct took over.

I closed my eyes, focusing through the haze of pain, and reached out through the mind-link. It was the most intimate connection between mates, and right now, it was my only lifeline.

Harlan... I called out, my mental voice weak. I'm in so much pain...

The link connected, but what came back wasn't comfort. It was a wave of thick, impatient cold.

What is it? I'm busy. His voice echoed in my head, sharp and frigid as a winter wind.

Behind his mental presence, I caught a scent that wasn't his. It was a cloying, sweet smell of jasmine, twisting around his natural, crisp scent of cedar and snow. It wasn't my scent.

My heart didn't just sink. It plummeted.

I knew that scent. Cora Kelley. My so-called distant cousin, who had been staying here as a "guest."

Where are you? I asked, my voice trembling, clinging to a final, stupid thread of hope.

A flicker of sensation came through the link, the feeling of his arm being touched by someone else.

That's none of your business, Seraphina. Stop using these pathetic tricks to get my attention. His words were knives dipped in poison.

Your weakness disgusts me.

That was the last thing he said before he severed the link.

The connection snapped shut. My mind was filled with a deafening silence, the echo of his disgust, and the lingering scent of jasmine. The psychic backlash hit my body like a physical blow. I convulsed, and a mouthful of blood surged up my throat.

I struggled out of bed, needing a glass of water. Each step felt like walking on broken glass.

At the top of the stairs, I saw a light on in the living room below. The housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, was sitting there, watching television. She was Harlan's old nanny, and in this house, her contempt for me was a constant, simmering presence.

She saw me but didn't get up, just lazily lifted her eyes. "Luna. Is there something you need this late?"

She called me Luna, the title for the Alpha's mate, but her tone dripped with mockery.

I leaned against the wall, my voice a raw whisper. "I need a glass of water."

She stood up, but not to go to the kitchen. She moved to block my way. "The kitchen has been cleaned for the night. The Alpha doesn't like anyone making noise downstairs after midnight."

Her words were the spark that lit the compressed rage in my chest, a rage born from four years of quiet humiliation and this final, soul-crushing pain.

I lifted my head and met her gaze. My body was weak, but I was the chosen Luna of this Pack. I gathered what little strength I had and let a sliver of my authority, the power given to me by the Moon Goddess, seep into my voice.

"Get out of my way."

It wasn't loud, but it was an order.

Mrs. Gable froze, the scorn in her eyes replaced by shock. She had never expected me, the quiet, obedient Seraphina, to fight back.

She took an involuntary step back, clearing the path.

I didn't go to the kitchen. I turned and walked, step by agonizing step, back upstairs. I didn't need the water anymore.

Back in my room, I stared at the woman in the mirror. Pale face, hollow eyes. Was this the result of loving someone for seven years?

I remembered that day in the Ancestral Woods, seven years ago. A young wolf with the scent of cedar had saved me, his warmth a beacon in my grief. It was Harlan. For that, I had loved him for seven years and endured four years of his cold indifference.

Now, his cedar scent was tainted with another woman's perfume.

The Rejection ceremony required both parties to agree to sever the bond. Only when the rejected party says the words, "I accept your rejection," does the tie blessed by the Moon Goddess truly break. Harlan had initiated it, but I had been clinging on, begging him to see me, to turn back.

But tonight, his words and that jasmine scent were a bucket of ice water, shocking me into a cold, hard reality.

I wouldn't beg anymore.

I opened the drawer of my nightstand and pulled out the formal rejection document, stamped with the Pack's crest, that Harlan had thrown at me four days ago.

My inner wolf howled in protest, a cry of pure agony.

But my eyes were calm.

I had to accept his rejection. I had to leave.

This wasn't the end. This was the beginning of my fight to survive.
