Chapter 2

My first priority was to stockpile supplies and build an apocalypse fortress. With that in mind, I lowered my head, letting my bangs hide my expression.

"If that won't work, then buy me a house in Crescent City and give me five million in cash. That's not unreasonable, is it?"

Dad looked confused. "Didn't I already buy a place near campus for Amber? You can just live there. Why do you need another house?"

"Evelyn! How can you be so greedy?" Amber glared at me, her voice sharp with anger. She grabbed my arm tightly, and her nails dug into my flesh.

I ignored the pain and kept my eyes on Dad. "Give me these things, and after that, I'll have nothing to do with the Carter family."

They wouldn't last more than a year and a half anyway. Shock flashed across Amber's face first, then a flicker of delight.

"Are you serious?"

She couldn't hide how thrilled she was. It was completely at odds with the saintly act she usually put on.

I merely gave a small nod.

Dad hesitated, but eventually Amber's encouragement won him over. He worked efficiently, as if afraid I'd change my mind.

The next day, he handed me a property deed with my name on it and a bank card, then looked at me meaningfully. "It's not too late to back out."

I looked back at him. At least he had some conscience left. But I knew that if he had to choose between Amber and me, he wouldn't hesitate to pick her.

In my previous life, I had called him the moment I collapsed from the heat. But all I got was his merciless cursing.

"It's scorching hot out there. You want me and Amber to come get you? Are you trying to kill us? You're so young, yet so manipulative. What a waste raising you all these years."

My heart shattered. In the second before death, I kept wondering why. We were twins. How could they be so cruel to me?

It turned out that some parents really didn't love their own children. This time around, I knew better than to expect anything from them. I grabbed the deed and booked the next flight to Crescent City.

They didn't understand why I wanted to buy property there, but in my previous life, this city was the only place on Earth untouched by the extreme heat.

I bought a two-story villa with 10,000 square feet of space. It came with an underground parking garage. When the apocalypse came, that garage would be the perfect natural shelter.

I filled the house with rice, pasta, and flour. To prevent the food from spoiling, I hired workers to refinish my villa to laboratory standards.

I also had the underground garage completely renovated, leaving only a small door with retinal recognition. Next, I went to the supermarket and bought tons of snacks and shelf-stable foods.

After the heatwave hit, I'd need to avoid heat injury, so I purchased a hundred large freezers, various cooling equipment, and solar generators. By the time everything was done, the entire villa had become a natural protective barrier.

The food inside would last me three full years. The sun would continuously power the solar generators, so I wouldn't have to worry about electricity at all.

I liked being alone. But to avoid boredom, I downloaded several thousand movies from the internet.

I also cleared a small plot of land inside the house. After the apocalypse came, this would be the only soil left that could support life.

By the time I finished, there were only three days left until the end of the world.
