After My Ex Left Me Before Surgery, I Ruined His Engagement Chapter 1

The orthopedic surgeon's office smelled like antiseptic and old carpet. I sat on the exam table, paper crinkling under me, and watched Dr. Diane Walsh clip X-rays onto the lightbox. My leg throbbed. It had been throbbing for weeks now, a deep ache that woke me at 3 AM and didn't let go.

'Miss Hayes,' Dr. Walsh said. She didn't soften her voice. I liked that about her. 'The deterioration has accelerated. We need to operate within the week.'

I nodded. My hands were in my lap, fingers laced tight.

'There's a risk,' she continued, turning to face me. 'Significant nerve damage. If the graft doesn't take, or if we can't stabilize the joint—' She paused. 'You could be looking at permanent mobility loss. A wheelchair.'

The word hung in the air. Wheelchair. I thought about the frozen lake. The way the ice cracked under my weight when I dragged Erik out. The cold so sharp it felt like knives.

'Okay,' I said.

'You'll need someone with you. Post-op, during recovery. This isn't minor.'

'I'll call my boyfriend.'

Dr. Walsh looked at me for a long moment, then nodded. 'Schedule it with the front desk. Don't wait.'

I called Erik from the hospital corridor. My hands shook, but my voice didn't.

'Hey,' he said. I heard traffic in the background. 'What's up?'

'I just saw Dr. Walsh. I need surgery. This week.'

Silence.

'Erik?'

'Yeah. I'm here.' He exhaled. 'That's… that's serious.'

'She said there's a chance I won't walk again.'

Another pause. Longer this time.

'Can we talk about this tonight?' he asked. 'I'm in the middle of something.'

I looked out the window at the street below. People walking. Running. Moving.

'Sure,' I said. 'Tonight.'

He came to the apartment at seven. I heard his key in the lock and stood up from the couch, wincing as weight shifted onto my bad leg. He walked in carrying his messenger bag and a manila envelope.

He didn't hug me.

'Sit down,' he said.

I sat.

He placed the envelope on the kitchen counter. Then he pulled out his checkbook, wrote quickly, tore it free. He set it beside the envelope.

'What is this?' I asked.

Erik looked at me. His face was calm. Composed. Like he'd rehearsed this.

'Two hundred thousand dollars,' he said, nodding at the check. 'And the deed to the Tribeca condo. It's in your name now. Paid off.'

I stared at the check. The numbers didn't make sense.

'I don't understand.'

'I'm ending this, Astrid.' His voice was even. Reasonable. 'It's not working. It hasn't been for a while.'

The room tilted slightly.

'You're breaking up with me.'

'I'm being fair,' he corrected. 'More than fair. That's a lot of money. The condo's worth at least a million. You'll be set.'

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man I'd spent seven years beside. The man I pulled from a frozen lake. The man who once pulled me from a bridge.

'I'm having surgery in three days,' I said quietly. 'I might not walk again.'

'I know. That's why I'm doing this now. Clean break. No drawn-out mess.' He shifted his weight. 'I'm going back to Madalyn. She's… she's the one who saved my life, Astrid. At the lake. I owe her that.'

Something cold settled in my chest. Not anger. Not yet. Just cold.

'You owe her,' I repeated.

'She pulled me out. She gave me a second chance. I can't keep ignoring that.'

I thought about the ice. The way it cut my palms. The way Erik's lips were blue when I dragged him onto the shore. The way my leg buckled and I didn't feel it until hours later because the adrenaline was too loud.

I didn't say any of that.

'Okay,' I said.

Erik blinked. 'Okay?'

'Take your things. I'll be out by tomorrow.'

He stared at me. I think he expected tears. Begging. Something to make him feel like the hero again.

I stood up, walked to the bedroom, and started folding my clothes.

He left twenty minutes later. I heard the door close. I made the bed—hospital corners, tight and perfect—and finished packing. I didn't cry.

The next morning, I checked into Mount Sinai. I signed the consent forms alone. The nurse asked twice if someone was coming.

'No,' I said, and smiled in a way that made her stop asking.

That afternoon, I needed groceries. Just small things—crackers, ginger ale, something bland for post-op. I went to the Whole Foods two blocks from the hospital, moving slowly, my cane clicking on the tile.

I turned the corner into the coffee aisle and froze.

Erik stood ten feet away. Madalyn's hand was tucked into his elbow. Their cart was full. I saw the coffee—the same dark roast I used to buy him every week.

His eyes found mine. Dropped to my leg. To the cane.

'Still limping around, I see,' he said. His tone was light. Almost friendly. 'You should really rest up.'

Madalyn smiled. It didn't reach her eyes.

I looked at him. At the man who'd handed me a check three days before surgery. At the woman whose hand rested on his arm like a claim.

'Some injuries,' I said quietly, 'take longer to heal than others. But they do heal. Eventually.'

I walked past them. Steady. Unhurried. I didn't look back.

Behind me, I heard nothing. No footsteps. No voice. Just silence.

Surgery was scheduled for 6 AM. I woke in the dark, dressed, and took a car to the hospital. Dr. Walsh met me in pre-op.

'Ready?' she asked.

'Yes.'

She nodded. 'We'll take care of you.'

I went under counting backwards from ten. I made it to seven.

When I woke, the room was white. Bright. My leg was wrapped and elevated. Everything hurt in a distant, muffled way.

I turned my head.

On the windowsill sat a single arrangement of peonies. White and soft pink. No card.

I stared at them. My parents' funeral had been full of peonies. I'd hated them ever since.

I should've asked the nurse to take them away.

I didn't.

I closed my eyes and let the morphine pull me back under.
