He Tried to Break My Hands, Then Learned I Owned His Masterpiece Chapter 1

HELENA'S POV

I had just raised the portable UV lamp toward the lower corner of *The Last Light* when a hand closed around my right wrist.

I didn't have to look up to know whose it was.

Marcus Hale pulled me back from the stanchion rope as if I were a child reaching for a hot stove. His silver cufflink dragged across the pale surgical scar on the inside of my wrist, and a sharp, needling numbness shot straight into my thumb. The lamp nearly slipped from my fingers.

Around us, the New York preview room was a sea of white walls, white orchids, and white silk. Nobody stopped talking, but I felt the attention shift.

Allison stood at his side, her arm hooked through his. When she lifted her champagne glass, the light caught the emerald on her finger.

I knew that ring. I had chosen it four years ago, standing at a jeweler's counter on Madison while Marcus laughed and said I had better taste than he did.

Four years ago, he had also sat on the edge of my hospital bed after the surgery. He had pressed his lips to this exact scar and told me nobody would ever hurt it again. That same month, I turned down the restoration scholarship in Florence, the one I'd already been awarded, so I could stay and help him raise money for his gallery.

Now his eyes moved over my gray work coat and the lamp in my hand.

"Look at this," he said to Allison. "They sent the help."

Then he turned back to me.

"Still playing with paint, Helena? Sign the report. That's all you're good for."

He held out a check between two fingers.

I didn't take it. I didn't even look at the amount. I pulled my wrist free, stepped to the side of the barrier, and angled the lamp toward the edge of the canvas.

"Helena," he said.

I ignored him.

The signature in the bottom right corner looked like my father's. The slant was right, and so was the hook on the final letter. But my father always went back over his name with a second, thinner layer of ochre once the first had dried. He said a signature should have a shadow.

This one had none.

The painting stood on an inspection easel, its back accessible from the side. I ran the light along the stretcher bar. The staples on the backing were bright and clean, with no rust bloom and no dulling. Under the UV, the varnish glowed an even, milky green, but the restoration log I had filed four years ago recorded patchy fluorescence along the left third, where I had consolidated flaking paint.

That patch was gone. I saved front, reverse, and UV photographs to the inspection file with my phone in my left hand.

"I'll need the complete provenance chain," I said. "Every transfer, every condition report, every conservator who touched it since the last log."

"You'll need a pen," Marcus said.

He slid a form across the small inspection table beside the barrier. It was already filled out. *Authentic. Undisputed.* All it needed was my signature at the bottom.

"I'm not signing a pre-filled certificate."

"It's a formality."

"Then it can wait for the paperwork."

He pressed the form down flat beneath my left hand, pinning it against my ring finger. The stiff corner of the paper bit into the edge of the old scar on my other wrist where it rested on the table. He did it without changing expression, the way you'd straighten a crooked frame.

My eyes went to the consignor field.

*Hale Art Holdings.*

Something in my chest went very still.

Four years ago, Marcus had brought me a "temporary loan form" for this same painting. He said it was just so the gallery could hang it for a season and the insurance would be simpler. He had turned his phone face down on the desk while I signed. Two weeks later, the gallery's security system passwords stopped working, and he'd shrugged and blamed a vendor.

I had believed every one of those excuses on its own.

Lined up together, they made a straight line.

I didn't grab the form. I took out my phone, photographed only the consignment tag clipped to the barrier, *HAH-001*, and put the phone back in my pocket.

"Are you done?" Marcus asked.

"An old signature doesn't make a new forgery real."

His face changed. It was small, a tightening around his mouth, but I had spent years learning to read it.

He moved fast. One hand flat against my shoulder, and my back hit the plaster wall behind the inspection table. The cold went straight through my thin coat.

"Everyone," he said, raising his voice just enough to carry. "I'm sorry for the interruption. Some of you may remember the theft from my gallery four years ago." He tipped his head toward me. "This is the woman who did it."

Two men in dark suits near the next painting stopped talking. Somewhere to my left, I heard the soft click of someone locking a phone and slipping it away.

Allison raised her own phone and took a picture. Not of my face. Of the exhibitor badge clipped to my coat, my name and the auction house logo in clean black letters.

I didn't argue about the theft. I had argued about it for four years, to police officers and lawyers and people who used to be my friends. None of that was going to happen against this wall.

Instead, I looked past Marcus to the event coordinator hovering by the doorway with her clipboard.

"Excuse me," I said. "I need this contact logged in the incident register. Now, please."

She hesitated, then came forward.

Marcus laughed, low. "You really are jealous, aren't you? I took your father's masterpiece and brought it into rooms he could never have walked into. And you can't stand it."

I thought of my father in the hospital bed, the IV taped to the back of his hand, tracing the underdrawing of *The Last Light* in the air with one shaking finger. Here's where the light breaks, Lena. Here's where I changed my mind. He'd pointed to the tiny gold repair mark I'd left on the bottom inner edge of the frame.

I looked down at the bottom edge of this frame.

There was nothing there.

"The art world knows what you are," Marcus said. "A jealous thief."

I looked at him and, for the first time in four years, I didn't wait for him to explain himself. I didn't look for the man who had kissed my wrist.

He was a name on a consignment tag. A link in a chain.

The coordinator held out the clipboard. I took the pen in my left hand, because my right was still tingling, and wrote clearly.

*7:42 p.m. Present: M. Hale, A. Grant, two buyers, coordinator. Unauthorized physical contact. Wrist grabbed, subject pushed against wall.*

"I'd also like a second staff member present while I seal my inspection photos," I said. "As a witness."

The coordinator glanced toward the security guard by the door. He was already reaching for his radio.

Marcus didn't wait. He tossed a second document onto the table in front of me. The letterhead belonged to an insurance underwriter.

"Supplemental certification," he said. "Since you love paperwork."

Clipped to the back was a collateral rider for a bridge loan. The figure was printed in bold: *$18,000,000.* Below it was the settlement date for the auction lot.

Ten days from today.

Marcus uncapped a heavy black fountain pen, the gold nib catching the light, and laid it across the table beside my right hand.

"Before the preview closes," he said quietly. "You sign. Or I make sure that badge never gets you into another room in this city."

I picked up the pen, recapped it, and set it back on the table, closer to him.

"Put everything in writing," I said. "Including the threat."

I saved the underwriter's number from the letterhead into my phone. Then I opened my messages and typed to Naomi, my lawyer.

*Preserve HAH-001 records.*

I hit send.

When I looked up, Allison had drifted toward the hallway. She stood directly beneath the security camera, her back to the room, and slowly closed the lid of a small velvet jewelry box.
